This is my first post on any forum ever so I am a bit nervous, but I want to become a better ranger.

I have played my ranger off and on for the last year, I only have 210 hours played on it. Which for me is not a lot and I still consider myself to be somewhat of a novice to this game and this profession.

I currently do not do any dungeons because I have no idea what build to do or use.

Therefore I spend most of my time in wvw or spvp. Currently I am running a stealth trapper for wvw,

I also run axe/dagger and sword/torch for spvp.

I am just curious if I should be more focused on different kinds of gear because right now the only reasoning behind this build is because I am a condition ranger, so I went for max condi damage and vitality for health or at least more survivability and power to hit more with my attacks?

I am just curious to hear some feedback on my trapper build and other ideas for spvp builds.
Also if anyone has a good build for pve (dungeons or fractals) I would like to see them.

-Thank you!

Standard Dungeon Build for Ranger. If you choose to do otherwise, at the very least, bring Spotter and a traited Frost Spirit. Good luck and have fun running dungeons, mate.

Since you consider yourself a novice, I have to add a disclaimer to the metabattle build Wonderous linked.

That meta build is only going to truly be good if:

  • You are comfortable with Ranger sword. It is a quirky weapon.
  • Your group is a meta group … else the mobs live much longer and you’re going to get nailed … especially if not comfortable with Ranger sword.

You’d probably be interesting the SotF ranger for PvP. It’s one of (very roughly) two “meta” builds for conquest.

Re: Sebrent’s warning. You can make the build easier by swapping the GS in instead of s/a. That’s the training wheels, and once you get familiar with dungeons you’d probably want to use the 1h sword. I usually only play dungeons when I’m too drunk to continuing PvPing and have moved to WvW and then am too drunk to WvW and have moved to dungeons. So ya, it’s really not that bad using a sword. Enemies attack like once a year in PvE.

I don’t recommend straying away from berserkers equipment, melee, or the listed traits.

The only end game content that is roadblocked by gear or skill in this game is high level fractals. So if that’s your focus then right on, work on it. sPvP and WvW are do it until you learn it. There is no dungeon/world boss in this game that can’t be accomplished with a “non-meta group.” (except maybe those kitten three worms haha).

Meta is a term used by people obsessed with speed and efficiency (myself included). Meta does not mean access to content in guildwars 2. This world is your oyster, don’t let mob mentality stop you from playing whatever content you want to do. Veteran players are always willing to help new players in dungeons. Play your ranger, try all weapons, go for world exploration, do what ever the kitten you want to do.

There is a very comprehensive guide on dulfy for all classes for pve
http://dulfy.net/2014/07/05/gw2-ranger-pve-class-guide-by-lorek-and-cell

for wvw and spvp ist like Noein said you just got do it.

Here is a very simple but solid bare bones build outline to get you started for most condi/hybrid types of play (except traps and spirits) in both spvp and solo/small party wvw.

I have left the stats choice open (i like rabid or settlers/apothecary) as well as weapon/sigil choice, but any combination of SB, Axe, Sword, Torch and dagger will work and has its own pros and cons.

There is two trait point to allocate and there are option on all 3 of the remaining trail lines to put them in. For the grandmaster trait in WS don’t automatically go straight for EB, poison master or another master level trait are good options. I have also left one pet to choose, dogs, spiders, birds and the river drake are all good choice for different reasons. the most common ones are Drakehound and Jungle spider.

For the remaining utility’s any of the survivable or signets utility’s are appropriate and trolls can be switch for healing spring for different purposes.

Have fun
