Ranger master class?
No class is master. The goal of gw2 devs is to make all playstyles viable. Try it and see what you think is fun. The choice is yours.
chopps is right, it is certainly their goal to make all classes viable. But viability is a funny thing. whats viable in a 5 man skirmish might suck butt in 1v1 roaming ect.
I can say one thing with certainty. the skill ceiling on a ranger is quite high. Anyone can hop on one and pop things with a bow. But it takes true skill to optimize your build with skill rotations and to adjust on the fly. If you are able to do those things then the ranger is almost unbeatable in a 1v1.

It’s all relative. But for an all around “master class” it’s the Mesmer. They also have the group utility to really shine in WvW guild play. (Veil and Null Field) Also, you can pretty much go all glass and survive almost everything. But what really sticks out, is that you can keep your 1v1 build and still be super useful in group play. Something Rangers can’t do.
And rangers really lack the utility to be good in large guild play. They have a good water field that can be blasted for extra heals. And you can spec into shouts for perma regen and swiftness. But it’s not as good as previously mentioned Mesmer utilities.
That being said, I don’t like playing my mesmer very much. Usually play guardian/thief/ranger.
