I’ve seen a couple of people say on the forums and in game that the ranger pet AI is horrid. Comments saying that the pets don’t attack what’s in front of them, sometimes even running away from what they just attacked, etc. But I don’t understand it. My pets always do exactly what I tell them to do when I use a utility skill/command skill (profession skill). So am I just really lucky, or am I doing something ?right?
You are probably just missing some of the more glaring ones there are quite a few objects in the PvE side of the game that pet will not under any situation attack and I have seen them attack objects (that are for an event) when the event is not up and the object are normally not interactable.
As for ‘doing it right’ you’ve seem to manage to miss those problems well good for you.
Not to mention the number of odd bugs that tend to happen, my prime example was when they first added that spider queen to Kessix Hills after the first time I was webbed my pet dissappeared (as normal), but returned dead and each swapping started dead with full cooldown. Needlessly to say I parked my ranger in the grove and played witha different profession for a while.
There is also the problem they had (might still have) hitting any moving person in PvP. I don’t know if that one’s been fixed or not.

Yeah, though it’s mainly melee pets that have an unreliable hit-rate in PvP. Because even their auto attack has a cast-time that requires them to stand still, it’s hard for them to hit constantly moving targets, such as other players. Abilities such as leaps and other pet skills with a bit more range are more reliable. For reliable sustained damage a ranged pet is probably the best option. That’s mainly why I use a spider as my second pet.
Pet’s most trouble is with their speed and ofc, the terrain.
Our eagles goooo around when we jump off a wall…
In Silverwastes i can’t do what should be most natural to a ranger – climb a wall to snipe mordrem from above, yet having my pet down below getting their attention and using it’s skills in direct combat. Nope, pet doesn’t get the idea of door/teleport outside the wall. It just stands next to me, being useless…
Maybe i’ll try guard shout before i enter fortress, that i’ve yet to test, though it’s a waste of a slot skill..
Pet issue is very serious in pvp.
When I swap to bear and press f2, it often not responding, and required to walk a distance before it uses his cleanse, which by the time he uses, I’m already in quite abit of trouble.
Same goes to wolf. Often I tried to use f2 immediately after swap, he’ll wait for abit, walk forward before he uses his howl.
This is a terrible design and serious issue, and I need them to use these skills exactly when I want them to use.
Strangely, thread still got no “ranger from launch” players, claiming that pet mechanic is flawless.

Those exist? o.0
I am one of them…
