1 Day more to fix. Especially more important now that I went and bought from TP the Arachnophobia Bow for 65G, based on the ranger still becoming more viable and thus more playable.

Prices have since dropped alot, with to me is CRAP!!! for me :P

Agreed. The faster attack speed of the sword AA is useful and one of the draws to using that weapon. The ability to stick to a foe isn’t necessarily bad as long as a fix is implemented that allows dodge roll to break out of the AA sequence. I’d also say that the sword needs a leap at the beginning of a chain. Possibly the skill 1 sequence should have the leap into battle only in the first skill in the sequence. Or possibly reverse hornet’s and monarch’s in the sequence. Being able to leap out of battle with hornet’s is sometimes useful, but it can be replicated with other skills. Being able to gap-close with sword in hand would be useful more often.

No game changing abilities, nothing unique (maybe excluding the aoe ult root but this is just about it), pretty much everything else ends up being mundane and straightforward …

I agree also. I but there is a very effective BM build on gw2guru and it owns…. The spike dmg from my ravens coupled with the blind is very effective and I don’t believe I’ve lost a single 1v1 since using it….

Hmm don’t know if it has always been this way since I just started using it in my new set up, but the tooltip for protecting screech says 11 seconds, the wiki says 10 seconds, in reality it is 3 seconds. Which one is it supposed to be?

Wondering if any other pet abilities are not working as they should or if the tooltips are wrong.

Also I hope the fix does something about pet pathing for Rangers, actually if all pets were as smart as Mesmer phantasms that would be great.

The ranger’s greatest power, is his pet. Pets do a ton of damage and have very powerful utility skills.. this forces the ranger to be weaker by itself. This wouldn’t be a problem, if pets would actually be able to deliver their damage and utilities.. but they cannot, and they never will.

Pets use the game’s innate npc pathing system I guess, making it impossible for them to hit moving targets, and any change to make ranger pets be efficient, would require far too much work and effort and probably money.

That is why the OP (JonPeters) made no mention of pets, despite pets being by far the greatest issue for the ranger profession.

Rangers are balanced around their pets, but their pets are a null-factor in pvp, they do nothing against other players, this will not get fixed, and that is why rangers will never be as good as other professions in pvp. All you can hope for is a damage increase to unlock other viable builds/weapons for pve, such as the now useless longbow and greatsword, but I doubt you’ll even get that.

I gave up on my ranger. Friends who were focused on it , quit weeks ago. So now i have no problems with it, even more, when in wvw and i see ranger with my war i switch to rifle and do auto attack (sometimes i am even forced to use skill :O ).
Well , its not really true, sometimes i do log my ranger, to pick up money from broker, he is kinda faster, and since i keep him in LA he is always close to broker.

I don’t think we’ll see the ranger updates until Nov. I think Anet has their hands full with the halloween event.

Nov. will probably roll out another patch with bug fixes and class updates – hopefully we’ll see some love then.

I hope you will consider a thing that i hate of my ranger.

When i call my pet back with F3, why should i hit enemies in front of me? When i do that is usually for run away, or maybe because my pet it’s dying and i have already switched with the other one. When i hit other enemies is a problem to run fast and often my pet dies. You could say: well use the pacific button, ok but it’s hard doing it in combat and when you don’t have a quick button to do it.

I hope you will fix that.

I’ve been thinking about this change and this is what I’ve come up with..
Firstly, I am only concerned with 5v5 tPvP, nothing else. As stated earlier by Zsymon.8457, pets are the major mechanic of the Ranger and so this is were I feel a change is needed.

I propose that we make 2 categories of pets, that behave similar to spirits. One set would grant Passive bonuses to the Ranger and potentially those around him, while the other set would offer an AOE spell that had little to no cast time. In short, pets will NO longer deal damage, and as a consequence the player will be responsible all his/her dmg output.

I also don’t think there should be as many pets availible in PvP as there are in PvE if they do this change, I’d be happy with 8 passive and 8 active pets for starters. Just the basic stuff like for example, having a bear out would give you a passive vitality boost, while having an eagle out could give you more crit chance/dmg. Or if you’re a more active pet player, I know a couple of rangers who would kill for a instant cast interrupt. Just make it AOE insta cast with a decent CD and I think we have a solution. I can see a pro Ranger spec’ing two pets, one with an AOE 0.25 sec stun and another with and AOE poison, and even with a 40-60 seconds, a pro could rly make it count. See right now you could argue that the Ranger alrdy has this (and was intended to have this) in the form of jungle spiders or other pets, but it has been sited many times that the AI control pet spells are unreliable for competitive play, and do no go off as intended, Neither is the dmg from some melee pets.

Lastly, I feel that it is an important decision to separate PvP from PvE as I do think that there is a large demographic who are very casual gamers and enjoy having a pet behave like a pet. (maybe it should be and option in PvE? I have not even considered WvW to be honest, but I do not think that there is a shortage of WvW ranger as there are PvP rangers, especially at to tier play!)

Well i can say without a shred of doubt in my mind if they made this stupid change i’d never play my ranger in PvP period… why would i want to play a pet based prof to have a pet that doesn’t do anything? If i want a passive buff with an active AOE i’d take a spirit…. Pets as they are now, are REALLY REALLY good in tPvP especially if you have points in them, and god help the poor kittens soul that gets immobilized while that pet is locked on them, oh what? 3k crits with a 0 point Jag? 1/5th of your healthbar just vanished? That’s to bad…. they shold totally buff pets more cause they’re sooooooo under powered and broken…

Ranger have no burst, ranger have no condition builds. What in general ranger is? I do not quite understand. All classes have about 2 burst weapon sets, 2 condition. What is our burst weapon? And condition? Shortbow? Then why bleeding hugs only from the flank? Where is all traits on cond time etc? And second cond. weapon? Sword+torch? But normally on target can be kept only a poison. So there it our only condition in melee? Poison?
I really do not understand people who defend the ranger. Yes we CAN play with it. But this class is awful! It has not completed yet. Not smart enough. It literally knocked out of the game concept. We only have two build – beastmaster and a glass cannon. The class has no burst, no cond builds. No melee damage. No ranged damage. This is a class all only about abundance of beautiful pets. Varied and interesting pets. That’s it. Thats all.
As my friend likes to say – a class for girls. Willing to accept.

Here the matter is that the concept of the Ranger – it’s not a “just ranged fighter”. This is a kind of forest survival. Quiet and fast killer armed with bows, blades and nature magic. That developers can realize – judge for yourself. And a rifle is loud and brutal mechanism. It is not suitable for the style of the “forest magician”.

Get out your river drake. Use your F2 on an enemy. When the ability starts to cast activate Signet of the Hunt and QZ. Use Rapid Fire while your pet is using it’s lightning ability. Cackle manically as your foe drops dead.

It doesn’t always work and it’s got a long cool down, but when it does work. Whoa Nelly, it’s awesome.

Incorrect, sir.

It is, in fact, quite easy to use on a moving target. I’m going to share some more tips with you, because I’m a nice guy.

If you start off using an axe/warhorn when you initiate this attack, you can easily use Winter’s Bite to slow down your opponent long enough for Lightning Breath to finish casting, which has a 600 unit range.

Alternatively you can use one of the other myriad of control abilities we have as a Ranger in order to hold your opponent in one place.

Funny, I do the same BUT im usually yelling at my drake 70% of the time because pets are dumb. Sometimes it’ll fire off 1 shot then run to the enemy. Sometimes the enemy will run past it and it’ll still shoot in the direction it was facing while charging for the attack. Sometimes it will use go on cooldown without being used. And sometimes (the remaining 30%) it’ll actually do what you wanted and aimed right and I’m smiling my butt off because it was sweet.

All that frustration when most class can directly control their burst with 1 button while we have to cross our fingers if the pet is up to task. That’s the main problem with Rangers in this game, our main mechanic that separates us for the other classes is broken.

I never said it works perfectly 100% of the time. If you set yourself up right, you can get it to work about 80% of the time though. Which is pretty close to how often other classes can pull off their big burst moves.

If pets would become able to hit moving targets, having the devs add some actually useful beastmaster major traits, then putting 30 points in BM, would make the ranger quite powerful. After that it wouldn’t matter so much what weapons you use, since your pet would do the vast majority of the damage.

Imo, pet should provide consistent and reliable damage, as well as long cooldown burst damage, while the ranger should provide short cooldown burst damage (longbow), conditions (shortbow), and utility.

But that will only work if pet AI gets seperated from npc AI.

The spirits desperately need to be reworked. I can understand that ANet felt it to be necessary to dumb the pretty unique mechanic of GW1 spirits for GW2 down (spirits applied effects on both friend are foe, and the effects weren’t straight up buffs or debuffs but would entirely change the circumstances of the battlefield), but atleast give them their huge range and unlimited, static effect back to differentiate them from generic effect fields.
The static effect shouldn’t be a regular buff, but instead something that can be exploited and toyed with, like an “on effect, do X”/“whenever Y” mechanic. As for example, and I just conjured that this very second, dodge rolls deal damage, to the enemy if you’re an ally and to yourself if you’re an enemy. Obviously this is an idea more appropriate for PvP, but it’s just to give an idea. “X% chance to” effects are never enjoyable in my opinion, as are, in the case of spirits, plain old bonuses like added burn or added protection. It’s a doubly uninteresting, underwhelming mechanic spirits currently get.

I just want my ranger to not be overlooked in PvP, maybe not even balanced in this patch, but make us a threat at least. We gotta be the only class that the enemy tournament team is thinking “oh good, 5 vs 4” lol.

And I agree with the obstruction glitch, I don’t get why that happens but it seems to always happen on my main timing skills so I get screwed every time with knockback shot.

Well dps or usefulness of weapons is the prime concern, LB is not even half as good as thief Shortbow.. actually LB is about the worst weapon slot in the game, pet pathing and AI is bad although necromancer minions are really really bad, one handed swords have good abilities on paper but are not practical in pvp neither is dagger you just end up whiling around and stabbing the sky. Trap builds are FORCED to use 3 traps to do viable damage which means no stun break utility which means traps need a serious buff or hide in plain sight does. Pet options should extend past some combination of Lynx, some kind of cat or river drake or maybe a bird and if a thief with 10k health can just ignore your pet and beat you to death while in perma stealth, something is wrong. Your permanent pet with traits and skills that can die, should probably warrant more respect than an insta cast berserker mesmer clone that can be cast every few seconds. Pets set to defend should also probably peel off other pets and illusions/minions attacking you, your in fight with a mesmer, his mob is attacking you, your pet is attacking him ha ha who comes out on top, trick question. Our downed ability is not great, I notice a total lack of cheese for us while other classes can stealth, come back to life, make clones or turn into mist, our options are, pet sits on our face.. …. great. In theory we have spirits and heal/support trees which are just not practical. What is the benefit of immobile spirits in the first place they are not that great when they move around, what warrants a TRAIT to make a spirit move, why make something with a built in flaw. .. really just questioning the design of that thought process from the bottom up. Why is the gap closer for long sword more viable to getting to an enemy than longbow.

The Ranger class is full of very straight forward questions about Duh abilities.

I want a screen.
Even with 5 Stacks of Might from my pet, a complete crit gear and max range my auto attack doesn’t crit for 4 k.
Hell sometimes its barely 2k.

We’re talking about hitting lvl 80 mobs ain’t we?

From a pve view, I Feel my ranger is pretty awesome, when I switch pets every 16s getting quickness really throws my damage up their.. my main issue is people say rangers are super simple, while they are they are fairly complex to really manage your pet well, not from a mechanic point of view, but from an actual I do care if my pet dies, but want to use melee pets.

I have to switch my pets in and out so often, pull them away from aoes so often that they are hardly in melee. Yes its fantastic damage when the jaguar is doing damage, but you cannot always keep the pet alive via switching and pulling. Lupi is a good example even using ranged pets is a nightmare, and you HAVE to use ranged pets due to the stupid grubs in wave one. Whoever though letting stuff spawn on PETS really slipped up in all honest for this games combat.

I can keep my pet alive almost permanent using two bears or a bear and a jaguar, but some boss fights are so poorly designed and obviously have had no thought on how it would impact a pet class, especially one where the pet is 50%+ of our damage, I love my pet doing a large chunk of the damage, i really do. I just wish the pets didn’t get hurt so much from Area of effect skills and non targeted attacks, we may then be able to use more than a few select pets in dungeons.

Adding a reduced damage trait at least to the beastmaster tree, such as 80%(30% in tpvp) reduced damage from all area of effect skills. Speeding up pet movement by 15% passive and reworking the vast majority of “F2” skills and allowing these skills to function better on moving targets, along with changing the “f3” command to override all functions and work instantly.

I have much experience PvE wise, not so much PvP.

Ranger PvE: Great. Very capable to solo a lot of things. Spirits and Pets still need work to make them (more) viable.
Compared to other professions, when playing in a team I find rangers not to be good combo-starters, but very good combo-finishers.

Builds/specs/traits: I find a ranger perfect. As a player you can make your build very complex synergized with your weapons, pets and other players, but very simple is also possible and viable. Makes, and keeps, it a fun profession to play with.
To clear out the difference with another profession, for example, I find a mesmer not easy to synergize with my 2 weapons sets and how defensive/offensive/control etc I want it to be. In all cases to make a mesmer viable, it’s pretty complex.

PvP: Can’t compare with other professions yet since I haven’t played them yet. But in WvsW you’re very bound to tanky pets or you have to take some utility skills/traits into account to make your more squishier pet viable. (same for PvE dungeons)

Pets should not to any damage at all .They should come with special skills which benefit us when using them not take away 50% of our damage and give it to a pet and hope he knows how to use them which they don’t. That would fix everything. Decided what pet to use for what enemy with a handful different skill or traits per pet.
