Warrior’s elite signet has a 60 second CD and has superior function without a stupid maxed out traitline requirement. How is that fine?

I am also scared Rhydian. I didn’t see a reason to lower pet damage. I have to dodge a thief’s backstab why can’t they just kite my pet? I really like my spec and I am worried that this “update” will be a downgrade in reality.

Come on, rangers have always been the most nerfed class. (For some extremely weird reason.) But we still kick it, you know why? Because we have to learn our ability’s and our class to actually be good at it. I doubt we will ever get the buff our class needs, but as long as they don’t nerf us even more I don’t really mind. I still kick thieves and warriors butts.

And to the GW1 ranger; Are you crazy? We were epic good, and extremely versatile compared to any other class in GW1.

Loaded with whole bunch of run…. Loaded with most “dodge” skills (Lightnign reflex, whirling Def, Natural Strides, etc.)… Loaded with almost all the condition. (Burn, Poison, Bleed, Blind, cripple)…. Ever tried a Touch Ranger? Super fun. Energy Usage?? Max out expertise and cut your energy usage in half!

Well the pet attribute was worthless… I also didn’t have nightfall so I didn’t have mending touch… People got mad at my kick kitten PvE builds. Rangers are good when used by the right players. However, in GW1 if i were to fight myself a ranger vs a non ranger with no counter builds my ranger would have probably lost…
… I am just scared this change will mess up my current build because its almost perfect how it is.

Worst thing is that ^ isn’t that far off either.

But instead of buffing axe, they will buff 1h sword dmg but we will still be rooted while using it.

Currently in pvp, the only really viable build is torch+trap condition ranger and the sad fact is, its not that great.

I’ve been hoping the ranger would get fixed much sooner then this, but at least its coming…..

Seriously, people, the first post answers a lot of questions.

One problem with rangers is the lack of build diversity created by a number of sub par utility skills. Many signets, a shout or two, and spirits are all a bit lackluster. That is the first place to expect improvements. Second is trying to improve the feel/ pacing on some weapons.

Spirits are going to be improved, most signets and a few shouts too. Possibly, your weapons will feel better to play with, if that comes in time with this update.And you’ll get bug fixes in top of that.

The ranger IS still very playable, effective in all aspects of the game..

I have NO trouble in PVE, dungeons, DE’s
I have NO trouble in sPvP and WvWvW

yes other classes may well do things better or more easier or more efficient than us.. Your acting like we have no skills in our hotbar or no traits to use..

Seems to me you people wont be happy untill you have some sort of overpowered skill..

I challenge you to bring to me a scenario where the ranger sucks soo bad i have no choice but to quit and make another character..

You wont be able to do it!!!

The game is still very much a skill based game where theory crafting is essential to ensure the best possible build for the given situation.. Crying because your SB is a bit slower does not mean you cant kill.. May well just mean you kill a bit slower..

You act like A-net have taken the SB out your characters hands and replaced it with Nerf gun (if your not sure what one is < http://www.hasbro.com/nerf/en_GB/n-strike.cfm > ) when you wasnt looking..

u see a warrior, expect him to Leap > Flurry > 100b

It seems everyone in this thread is suffering from serious ego problems. Hate to break it to you, but Rangers aren’t the only profession with problems. There isn’t a magical switch A-Net flips to make balance changes, there is a process, and it takes time. Tack on the time needed to make major balance changes for the other classes, and it’s no surprise the patch is coming out with the Nov 15th update.

Instead of whining about the patch not being when YOU wanted it, why not be happy we’re getting a patch?

The Ranger isn’t broken, unplayable, and downright awful like everyone has been exaggerating it to be. The Ranger just suffers from a lack of purpose and build variation. I can be a great Ranger, but I don’t fulfill any role. Jon said this is what the patch will address, giving Rangers more builds by fixing some weapons and buffing some suckish utilities.

The ranger is definitely not broken. It’s perhaps one of the easiest classes to play. The only fault I can find is the lack of team support in the form of utilities (Call of the Wild being amazing, but you need a warhorn for it), since the spirits are kind of underpowered considering their range and general squishiness.

My guild and I do dungeons on a regular basis, and the team almost always has 2 rangers at least. We’ve done all the paths in CoF, SE, Arah (except the Seer path), AC and one in TA. I’ve gotta say, it must be the easiest role in the game to play against Lupicus, considering the longbow’s extreme range when traited and the amount of dodge power you have.

It could use some complexity, but hey, I am already loving my ranger!

I think it would be wise for JP to release a list of the committed fixes. Time to mull these over would do everyone good. Some people would freak out, but they’re the same people who will freak out when it’s actually released anyway. Get it over with, and then the rest of us who are rational, thinking beings can start to strategize how our builds will change.

Honestly, if the changes are already in testing, then it’s likely that they’ll be delivered. Give us a bone to chew on til we actually get them.

Err no. Ranger is for people who like to play Pokemon and let their pet do 50% of their damage, or people who like to auto attack things to death. Just kidding rangers, sorry they destroyed you in beta.

Also, we already have ranged options. It’s just that P/P is a little underpowered currently so not many play it.

The patch most definitely will have bug fixes for ranger. I fixed two earlier today alone. Realistically, however we can only do a patch every few weeks if we expect to make more than minor improvements so all the things I talked about will be in the next big patch which is about 2 weeks away.

Actually nevermind, sorry that was just me fuming, I understand that the process to get the bugs worked out in the ranger will have to go through an extensive QA testing procedure, its not fair to blow up at you guys for not doing the impossible. 1. ANet recognizes that the Ranger is underpowered (this goes beyond bugfixes)
2. This will be rectified in the upcoming major patch.

Ranger/ Hunter type classes have always been the most difficult to balance, and most of the time resulting it in being 1 of the worse class compared to the others. Just look at WoW hunters. And ANet have been giving the same response as Blizzard representative. Always the “Please wait a little longer, we will be fixing the class in the next patch” excuse. Most of the time nothing been fixed. WoW hunters still sux after 5 expansions.

Got an infraction for saying I was disappointed what the heck? Any way..

Ranger being playable =/= Ranger being useful or worth bringing to anything.

We can all go into a Dungeon or PVP as a Ranger and say HEY LOOK I’M DOING IT GUYS!!

But can you really try to argue against the notion just about any other class in the game would be more worth wile in that slot?

You can’t because almost every aspect about Ranger right now is underwhelming or underpowered or straight up useless.

Again I am crossing my fingers for this update that keeps getting pushed back.
May we all not be disappointed.
But Hope for the best and prepare for the worst (as I gear up my Warrior)..

I like the first part. I don’t like the second part. I have the fear that Arenanet is going to water down the uniqueness and originality of some ranger weapons because they listen to the unable and lazy crowd. People see a weapon, think of a paradigm that they apply to this weapon, and then get angry because their world crumbles. I enjoyed the fact that I tailor builds around weapons. Giving this point of view, you can get out wonderful builds and amazing strategies with the Ranger.

This is the reason why the 1hand sword and twohanded sword really shines in the hands of skillful players. And people so often forget about their pet… the number 1 core mechanic and a big portion of the actual damage we are doing. I really hope that Arenanet takes this into consideration and is not going to water down the experience of the class just because of some whiners who can’t actually play it and want to enforce their playstyle on the profession instead of adapting to it properly.

And I really hope we get a ton of trait bugfixes too… because some traits do not work as intended, and few do not work at all and then there are those that are completely useless, even when they are being part of a complementing build.

I think fixes is exactly what the ranger profession needs, more than upgrades. If ranger pet could hit moving targets, if pet F2 abilities could be reliably used in pvp, then the ranger profession would become very powerful very fast regardless of its incredibly weak weapon skills. If you put 30 points in Beastmastery, on a pet that is able to use all its skills on moving targets, you’ll be quite successful. But that is impossible now since pets cannot hit moving targets, cannot have any impact on pvp.

I find it sad though that no pet AI fixes are ever mentioned, even though it’s what rangers need more than anything. Pets can do massive damage, they are very powerful compared to other MMO pet classes, but their pathing and AI behaviour is so subpar that they are a null-factor in pvp, having a pet out or not makes no difference in pvp, since simply moving around completely prevents the pet from ever hitting you with either its auto attack or any other ability it has.

This is why the weak ranger weapons stand out so much, in pvp all rangers have are their own weapon skills and utilities, and because they are balanced considering the pet, they are very very weak especially in terms of damage output. Weapons like shortbow are not only very weak now, they are also the most boring weapons of the game. When I leveled my ranger I only ever used crossfire, nothing else, not because it was so powerful, but because there was nothing else to do if you didn’t want to cut your dps in half by using other weapons.

All this makes rangers the weakest pvp profession of the game, and I don’t think this can be solved without changing pet pathing/behaviour, because if you boost weapons to the point that a ranger can compete in pvp, they will be far too powerful in pve, where pets are able to hit their targets, since you’d have to effectively double weapon dps.

I forget about my pet being a part of my damage because they are dead any time my damage matters……………. I dodge out of the circle and the pet gets slapped across the face. I call the pet away to try and make it dodge and it gets hit any way.

I have 0 interest in GS but LB undeniably needs work and 1 handed sword needs to let dodge break the animation.

How do they water down the uniqueness by pumping up the speed or internal damage a little?

Is admitting that something isn’t working and tweaking it or adding a little more to it really losing what it is? Or is it bringing it into its own more?

Nobody actually expects pets to be dropped or for any crazy profession altering changes to be made to Ranger.

But if you sit there saying how playing Ranger is all sunshine and flowers instead of bring forward your concerns, ideas, thoughts, and even hopes nothing is going to happen.

I keep getting infractions on the Ranger forums probably because I sound hostile or pessimistic or something ells.. But in truth I sound this way because I want to see changes and I want to see the class in a place it can truly bring something to the group worth wile.

I am sure devs like to hear the good and they deserve to but this is not 1 of those times in my opinion.

I’d personally like Signet of Renewal’s active effect to be better so that it embraces my signet of the beastmaster.

I’d also like Signet of the Hunt’s active effect on a traited ranger to be more useful, and overall maybe a 15-25% passive movement speed bonus because 10% I feel like it isn’t worth using but being 10% slower eats away at me.

And maybe some improvements to “protect me”. I feel it’s unreliable since my pet always dies.

In general, as with the current state of the Ranger profession, we, in comparison with other professions, lack focus & orientation, since we do not bring ANYTHING useful to a team (spvp, tpvp, wvw), ending up being the last to get picked. We do not have any game changing abilities, unlike other classes (Nullfield, Well of Power etc), once again complimenting our over-mundane nature.

Some points we’d like to see addressed are :
- Pet overhaul (https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/ranger/Suggestion-Pet-overhaul/first#post623504)
- Melee reworked, since the damage and focus in general of melee ranger is non-existant!
- Shouts
- Signets (e.g. Signet of the Hunt which is underwhelming specially in comparison with Thief’s counterpart)
- Spirits (luckbuster and mostly DEAD)
- Bows reworked (LB being slow and clunky, SB damage being nowhere to be found

We have a few rather poopy utilities that I hardly ever use. The pet shouts are pretty awefull- except for perhaps protect me which can help keep you alive if you have a beefy pet out. the pet gaurd I never use except for one or two dungeon instances when I can’t actually fight. the greatsword needs a look at too. Right now I feel ranger’s don’t really bring anything unique to the tanle that other classes can’t already do better. A warrior has far more burst in melee or ranged, our support spirits are lackluster- thier abilities, like our pet f2’s. have an annoying delay before going off. There aren’t very many fun and interesting builds right now that can compete with other classes.
That said I really enjoy my Ranger. I main one and have been 80 for some time. Playing just gets a bit stale every once and a while, and it can be disheartening to have other profeshions outshine you in everything.
Oh and traits need to be reworked some. Many traits I have just never tried as they just seem to be of little use.

Ranger is playable and fun… does it feel underpowered yes it does… if they buff it too much Ranger will become the new Thief with everyone screaming nerf! Happens every game with every Ranger like character.

What I for one hope they don’t change is the damage split between Ranger and pet it’s kind of the whole point of the prof… and means you need some skilll to manage the pet not just chuck it in there let it die and then QQ. Those who want to play Ranger without a pet should try Warrior IMO.

Bud you need to define fun, since fun is doing something special, while not feeling sub-par, when compared with other professions. Fun would be doing something game changing like throwing a portal and turning the tides of the battlefield. Fun would be when my dps soulmate, that being my pet, would be there to compliment my overall damage, instead of laying on the floor dead. As you can see the game is not exactly fun when you are on the receiving end.

Nono, on the contrary I am thanking you for pointing out the shallowness in my thread so let me try to elaborate it, in short.

Jon Peters said nothing about a change of damage or utility with weapons, but rather something about “Pace and feel.” And this is the thing that has me concerned, because what is clunky for some players, is actually bliss for other because they know how to work around it to suddenly shift a weapon to their liking. I am just afraid that Arenanet does the same mistake of “only checking the forums for feedback, and tailoring the game to it” like other companies did. I know that I have to play … “harder” to get up to par with other professions when I play, and I would be very thankful if we get those fixes that actually FIX things and do not make the ranger the new FotM.

Part of the reason why I am not sitting down and write pages of pages of suggestions and text, is 1) I have done this in beta already to see my concerns (and those of others) being unaddressed and 2) as long as the suggestion forum is broken as it is, I am not willing to post hours worth of my lifetime when it gets flooded away in 2 minutes tops. I am getting sick and tired of moderators removing a topic from a category where it BELONGS to.

Yes, I would love to see pets actually being able to attack on the move, like everyone else ( and many many npcs) can. It would be wonderful to no longer be forced to go with permacripple to make your pets hit things.

Yes, I would love to see more build variations possible with support skills. You can only make ONE spirit build that does not suck.

Yes, I would like to see a lot of traits being reworked, fixed and increased in viability. And if they are at that, giving more meaningful tooltips for ALL traits in the game.

Yes, I would be glad to be able to use ALL of my pets, and not only a few selected one because the rest outright lacks either utility, or survivability, or damage.

Yes, I would like to see my pet being able to think a wee bit more on its … paws… legs… wings… whathaveyou, and have me not being forced to dodgeroll AGAIN in order to have my pet take less damage (minor trait: protection on dodge roll) from an incoming blow. There are actually a few ways of doing this (give the pets attack chains too and have it like greatsword 1 having an autododge or defensive buff on their own, depending on pet family).

I do have to say that I have a lot of fun being one of the last people standing in mass fights due to my build, because things just do not hit me with sword+dagger and my pet and me regenerate a ton. This gives me a sense of power. I like how I can tailor a build around my pet and have it destroy anything, but it is hard to pull off due to pet AI problems. But more rewarding if it actually works.

I do not see much problem with longbow because of the way its 1 skill is designed. I actually have more problems with the shortbow. It just feels odd for someone like me who is actually bowcasting IRL, to see so many shots fired indefinitely. The longbow actually does more dps when you stand at 1000+ range compared to the shortbow, providing the arrows actually hits.
Which is another thing. I really want to see preparations get back into the game. I really want to see faster arrow flight back or something the like. It is a bit sad that I can dodge singletarget arrows from enemy rangers without actually using the dodgeroll.

It is the same thing like I give everyone who plays or starts ranger in my guild to disable the autoattack when using 1hand sword and weave in dodge rolls. You have no idea how many thanks I receive for that and how much more fun people having now with it. This is actually my biggest fear… that they will water down the sword because of people unable to adapt and thus cry out loud and say that the entire weapon is crap just because of skill 1.

TL;DR:
I also have to say, that it is not so bad for me (as a tinkerer, and hearty tester) to work with less right now and still be successful, even if it takes more effort. But I am going to be very happy once I have MORE to work with and be MORE successful.
This is what I am concerned about; that they take the effort out of the profession and take out all effort it takes to master it before they are trying to fix the bugs and errors the ranger profession has at the moment, primarily with traits and Pet AI. It is a game of skill, as they say, so then it should be playerskill and the ability to develop it in order to be successful with any profession. And not successfully whining in masses about Sword 1.

So please, Arenanet: first the bugs and the Pet. Then we can see how it works out, and then we will see if the weapons really do need that much of a rework.

To the people who are worried about things being changed and hating it – the person with 2 fingers on their hand who suddenly has 5 fingers will have to change things up. But it will be better. Right now, we’re just MISSING UTILITIES, by both omission and brokenness.

JP came out and said as much, and now has said “a few bug fixes”, which is causing much consternation.

I would be more than happy with the fact that they just fix bugs and leave weapons alone for the time being and see how the profession runs without bugs, and then with an improved pet AI before even thinking of touching the weapons in OTHER ways than adjusting attack times and damage.

In spvp vitality is widely regarded as superior to thoughness. However, the trait line giving vitality looks exclusevely designed for spirit builds (and some minor regen, which is hard to build for effectively in pvp).

I wish this could be addressed since other heavy damage proffesions have ways of avoiding damage (i.e. stealth) that ranger lacks. Vigor and endurance regen is one of the best options, but that is on the thoughness line and easily countered by the condition heavy meta.

Well i know ive been on board with the ranger dislike, but after taking a few days off and playing my Guardian, and then coming back to my ranger I can saw ive found some love in it… I took a step back and built a build outside the normal signants/QZ builds that everyone does.

I ran this build all day today and it offers good survivability and dmg output, so while ranger is still rather broken we do have options, ones that work at that!

Many signets, a shout or two, and spirits are all a bit lackluster. That is the first place to expect improvements. Second is trying to improve the feel/ pacing on some weapons.

I like the first part. I don’t like the second part. I have the fear that Arenanet is going to water down the uniqueness and originality of some ranger weapons because they listen to the unable and lazy crowd. People see a weapon, think of a paradigm that they apply to this weapon, and then get angry because their world crumbles. I enjoyed the fact that I tailor builds around weapons. Giving this point of view, you can get out wonderful builds and amazing strategies with the Ranger.

This is the reason why the 1hand sword and twohanded sword really shines in the hands of skillful players. And people so often forget about their pet… the number 1 core mechanic and a big portion of the actual damage we are doing. I really hope that Arenanet takes this into consideration and is not going to water down the experience of the class just because of some whiners who can’t actually play it and want to enforce their playstyle on the profession instead of adapting to it properly.

And I really hope we get a ton of trait bugfixes too… because some traits do not work as intended, and few do not work at all and then there are those that are completely useless, even when they are being part of a complementing build.

I feel that the weapon issue will be mostly focused on bows for the most part. Longbow is pretty boring and the only way to deal damage with the shortbow is to spam “1” like a bot which they have already come out and said was not “fun”.

Hopefully they will spice up the dagger as well because using it with a sword feels incredibly redundant.

How can so many mmo’s get balancing wrong?
How did anything that contributed to rangers DPS get nerfed in the first place, while others classes passed it flat out in that department?

The only way a game can be fair is to have everything equal, which is VERY unrealistic. So most companies go for the paper, rock, scissors approach of making x class do more damage, but y class take more damage, and z class using some kind of utility to be on par with the others..

This works in theory, but when the game was advertised no holy trinity, then every class should have the option to output the same numbers depending on what they want to do. Who cares if it lumps everyone into 1 build for a while, that just means that other builds/skills need buffing instead of that 1 viable build being nerfed.

TL;DR
Buff everything that people don’t use, do not nerf the things that people do use.

Some skills like sword #1 have critical design errors but are still usable. For shouts, there is always something more useful to slot for every build. I’ve found a use for everything but the shouts.
