Ranger vs Necro
How a ranger is suppose to win against a necro?
I can down most necros – condition mitigation food and increasing my conditions against them. I am not using a crit build.
Rabid gear, condi, condi, condi, and Undead runes along with the food and traits (it’s not an optimal build, it’s what I have been able to figure out after about 25 or 30 different builds – most of which got me killed more than not.).
The one that should be “easy”, and isn’t, are thieves – permastealthing isn’t fun for a Ranger when we can’t even have a chance in 1000 to win.
Frustrating to say the least.

Haha. You’re not! Your supposed to die a grisly death!
All joking aside, I can usually kill them by keeping them at range and widdling them down. Whatever you do, don’t condition bomb them! They will give it back to you. The best way is to kill them with conditions, but don’t bomb them. Just keep a small but steady amount of condition on them. They kill me a lot though. These are just as hard as warriors for me in PvP…

well warrior thieves aint so bad for me… atm its really the necro because of the lack of understanding about their class. ill follow the tips of archon
1 easy trick to killing necro’s is using Entangle. Make them dodge twice, then make them use their heal. After that you’re free to hit entangle and most of the time they will be stuck for a long duration.
Just have to watch out for them going into DS and hitting their #2 to teleport to you.
- -36/40% condi duration food are mandatory against a condi necro (I use -36% because they are way cheaper than -40%)
- Use ranged weapons for most of the fight, try to stay at range as far as possible, finish them off with sword only when they burn theyr last DS charge.
- Use signet of renewal when they condi bomb you
- Empathic bond is very helpfull
- Troll unguent and healing spring are the best healing skills agaisnt necros
- Don’t stand on red circles :P
Range them and reset the fight if it goes badly. They are so insanely slow.
I run a full zerker Ranger and while, I do die occasionally to a zerker thief, I can usually control the fight by keeping the opponent at range. This works with Necros very well. But, stability/stun breaks are necessary elements of your build.
Seriously though, are we the most broken class in the game? Is this just me?

“Rangers LEAD the way.”
I use dual spiders, muddy terrain and longbow. Just keep them at range and it’s very easy to win.
Same as for thieves, garden variety necros will go down if you keep ahead of them a bit, but a bit uneven matchup if a good player.
What works: entangle (esp vs minions), muddy terrain (esp when they use plague/lich), GS#5, Longbow#4, staying at 1000 or greater, lighting reflexes (get out of a bad fear), wolf fear (ironically), stability if it doesnt get reversed.
What doesnt work: RAO and horn buff can be disasterous if they have boon corruption, conditions can be bad if they have heavy transferal, have to feel them out a bit. Boons in general will get stripped pretty fast, so a build that doesnt rely on them is best.
Necros achilles heal is lack of stability, so exploit the heck out of that. Always keep a interrupt on tap for the lifedrain (when they start sucking in green from everywhere). Stay out of the well, dodge through the marks (have skull avatar at center). Lich can take you down fast but is worse than longbow for hitting so keep up the pressure but be evasive, they cant heal. Plague wont kill you but it will be difficult with constant blinds so cc and get back a bit and pepper them.
However there are some builds that necros have that is very tanky while dealing out massive damage. This was my type spec when I played necro and basically immune to rangers, so stay at 1000 range is the best bet vs this type, use lots of cc and knockbacks to maintain since you’ll be dead fast in 600 range.

I can beat most necros pretty easily. Combination of EB and HS is more then enough condi removal
Depends a lot on their build…
Some will corrupt your boons, some will transfer the condis you apply to them back to you, so the best bet is to not get boons and not give condis, until you know what they can do.
Most are stronger at close range, especially in death shroud, and yes, interrupting life drain is a must (especially since they can drain from you and your pet).
Life blast can hit pretty hard also, so I’m usually going with at least one ranged pet (spider), place myself so the pet is between me and the necro (few roamers take Unyielding Blast (Life Blast pierces and causes vulnerability).
(ususally have a cat on swap, so I try to have the cat out when necro is not in DS, and switch to spider when he is in DS)
I usually keep my burst for when they are in death shroud (I’m playing mostly condis, with few direct damage), and just whittle them down when they are out.
Makes for long fights, but most go well…
(Keyword : kite, kite, kite – they are slow and have one gap closer in DS, so easy to kite.) Try to never allow them to get withing 600 range from you, especially in DS.
If you cant interrupt life transfer (green bubbles), get away. Same with tainted shakles (green strings)(600 range).
It gives you torment (3 stacks, somewhat 1k base when not moving, 2k when moving), and it will immobilize you at the end of the skill, if you didn’t get away, allowing the necro to close the gap…
When most of you speak about Condi, I feel that Power necros can be even more dangerous.
It’s a false that they’re so easy to kite. Most of the roamers will use multiple sources of movement imparing effects such as Chill, Long Cripple, mostly 2 sources of immobilize. Good Power necro should also take Spectral Grasp.
Keep in mind that most of roamers running Power Necro solo are better, more experienced Necros in general, who grown bored of condi and they will know how to duel (not talking about wellmamcers rolling with blobs).
1v1 with Power Necro if you go for strict hit exchange, you lose. When you might think you’re doing excellent burst, many will just pop Spectral armor, regaining ~3400 effective Shroud health every second if not more.
Best bet in general would be to be highly-evasive and enter the fight with a lot of CC. Your pet is very likely to die during Life Transfer and gives further LF generation when Locust Swarm / Spectrals are up. After CC from the wolf if done, you might want to swap to Spider.
If any of you want to practice 1v1 with Power necro on WvW (Desolation matchup) or in tpvp, feel free to PM.

Between Lightening reflex, SB#3, and dodges, I usually do pretty well (in 1v1, when I can concentrate on the necro’s tell).
I might not have gotten against any good power necro, though, but most necros I encountered 1v1 were power.
Power Necro should and will outlast you. You have to rotate with sword at most and putting maximum possible pressure when Spectral Armor and DS are down and on cooldown.
It doesn’t really matter if you dodge one or two Blasts with Reflex or SB#3. Good Power DS Necro should be able to stay around 60 seconds in DS under your pressure if he so desires. Trading hits with Necro in Perception build is a suicide for Ranger most of the times, just trust me. You’ll get hit sooner or later and every hit varies : It can be either 3k on tanky necro or even up to 7-8k.
Good Power Necro doesn’t spam LBlast only. He should rotate and there’s no way you can dodge everything he throws at you. Your best bet is to keep Weakness up when he’s in DS (since Necro cannot cleanse it then unless they pre-use WoP) and bring a lot of CC.
