Rangers and pve?
Might get the same from people if you run ranger. Everyone wants warriors and guardians. I was running with my guild in AC and everyone was giving people boons and such. I felt I didn’t fit in too much with my ranger, to be honest.
I’ve never been turned down or trash talked for playing my Ranger but undoubtedly with spirits being poor and the dps less than stellar they don’t bring as much to a group as other classes can.
Rangers are the worst class for dungeons, only just a step above useless. If they are refusing your Necro then they will be laughing at your Ranger.
I wouldn’t say rangers are useless in dungeons but tbh the pet mechanic was really poorly implemented for dungeon runs.
Short answer: don’t. Roll something that doesn’t fail badly in a dungeon, like a guardian.

=/ so to enjoy the game i have to play a class everyone else wants me to play??……..
/sigh
guardians and theif are so boring kit wise and warrior seem braindeadish blah
I have at least one of every class, with two mesmers and two rangers, all level 80.
The least favorites to be picked in a dungeon are necro and ranger, I’m told, as they fail badly in dungeons and pets are effectively useless unless you micro manage the hell out of them, which just isn’t fun.
Necro is fun in wvw and probably the least understood class in terms of the things it can do in wvw, which is why I love playing it every now and again.
For open world pew pew, love the ranger, and enjoy playing it in wvw precisely because it’s such a broken feeble class. Warrior is great fun played well in wvw (try it without a GS and you will learn how much more fun it can be) and does more damage with it’s rifle than a ranger does with a bow…
Depends on your play style, but if you’re a dungeon bunny then steer clear of necro and ranger if you want regular groups (guild groups will take you..).
Rangers do really really well in pve, well in dungeons and OK in www .
Mighty roar (5x might) and Fury from Moa, Healing Spring, Warhorn buffs, and traps all help your group. I have never experienced people trash my ranger or playstyle. But you can’t be like warr or guard, still you can be a good addition to your group.
The real issue is that rangers can only add some kind of “spice” to the group. In dungeons you can have 5 warriors in a group and they can do pretty well. But having 5 rangers, it’s a real challenge!
For levelling 1-80 in the open world, they’re one of the most fun and easy classes.
I don’t take mine into dungeons, but I don’t really enjoy instanced content.
In Wuvwuv, they’re fun, but it’s hard to get kills and you will become a target as other classes see you as an easy mark.
Therefore I may take some time replying to you.
Play the class you enjoy and that you love. This is a game and it meant to be fun. You’re not going to have fun if you’re playing a class you dislike just to please others.
As a general rule, I never pug instances on any MMO I’ve ever played. As soon as I become interested in dungeons I find a nice guild.
As for ranger, I love it. I don’t use cookie cutter builds and I made my ranger how I want her to play. I do well too. She hits hard and my pets never cause me any issues. They rarely die in dungeons or cause me any grief.
If you enjoy your Necromancer then keep playing it (I plan on that being my 3rd 80), but if you want to experiment with other classes go ahead you may find something you really love!
Lvl 80 Sylvari Elementalist
Necromancers, thieves, and rangers are the least requested class because they have the fewest talent people playing in pve. They also provide the least amount of group buffing/healing. They are also the worst represented on forums, and so people who have no clue and try to play a class incorrectly screw it up for those who enjoy the class.
Take heart the elementalist and engineer went through the same crap at the beginning of the game, and now everyone wants one in pve. So it will turn around.
Heck, I run Minionmancer on my Necro with great success. Even though i get sworn at by my own guild when I first did it. Now they request it. In tPVP, I am the sole Minionmaster I have ever met, and I get laughed at until they die. I am now my guild’s designated bunker destroyer in pvp, and burrow/boss tanker in dungeon runs.
It’s about learning to play your class and ignoring people who have no ability to think outside of what they have been told or what they couldn’t do themeselves.
My main is a Ranger and I love her, but its (somewhat) true what people say about Rangers: they bring very little to the playing field in terms of teamwork.
As a Guardian, I can apply a plethora of boons, healing, burns and blocks for everyone AND still damage and/or tank the kitten out of anything the dungeon has to offer.
As a Warrior, I blow everything up in my path with head-to-toe Berserker stats and provide my group with condition removal, stability and banners with boons that cannot die!
…as a Ranger, I provide small, 4-digit critical strike damage (shortbow) and short duration Bleeds, no sustained or long-lasting group support, my Spirits can be killed with the slightest breeze and my pet requires my constant attention to stay alive.
I love my Ranger, and I love WvW roaming with her, but at the core of it all she’s just not up to par with everybody else – and that’s just how ArenaNet has designed the class to date.
Here’s hoping for more improvements in the near future!
Tarnished Coast
I’ve never gotten rejected from a party for being a ranger before. I’ve never even seen a necro rejected from a dungeon party. What server are you on?
PvE Main – Zar Poisonclaw – Daredevil
WvW Main – Ghost Mistcaller – Herald
I’ve i guess every single dungeon every single path on my ranger i cant say i have failed. I surivive longer than guardians and do more dmg than warriors . Just know your place and your role and you ’ll be fine with any class.
I really only PvE and Dungeon, so I cannot speak for sPVP or Wv3. If you want to get into PUGs, pick a profession that PUGs like (elementalist, guardian, warrior, engineer) or prepare to get passed over more often.
Ranger’s largest issues are (1) an unusually large number of still unresolved bugs and (2) your class feature (pet) is an AI and suffers from AI stupidity. Also, (3) F2 pet skill is usually not responsive within a 2 second window. You can deal with 3 by picking a pet whose skill is more forgiving of bad timing (e.g. black bear weakness, jungle stalker might or fernhound regeneration). Deal with #2 by being aware of when the AI will make a bad decision and be ready to deal with it. #1 will be worked out eventually.
Like other professions, certain skills are not easy to use to good effect (looking at you spirits), but can be effective after you learn when/how to use them. The ranger doesn’t have many no-brainer, easy to learn utility skills. Signets and Lightning Reflexes are easy standbys, but more so than guardians, necromancers, elementalists and mesmers (my other mains), there is no utility set that is both awesome and easy to use. Be prepared to be disappointed a lot by utilities during a longer than usual learning curve.
Other than that, the same general rules for every profession: learn all your weapon sets, when they are effective and, more importantly, when they are not the most effective choice. Learn when to stand your ground, when to dodge and when to run (which can be so different for each profession).
I have at least one of every class, with two mesmers and two rangers, all level 80.

Used to run dungeons a lot till 2 weeks ago when i started wvw. Not really a problem in dungeons unless you dont know there’s a dodge button. I’ve got both arah and coe armor sets so rangers dont really fail in dungeons, at least out of fractals which i havnt done much of.
Actually even I myself underestimate rangers sometimes. Had a group with 3 rangers in coe once and surprised me how well it turned out.

You must be in an elitist server because I’ve never ran into that problem. Not once have I been kicked or refused and same goes with low level pugs.
Best of luck to you, it’ll take a bit of time for ranger to click to your playstyle if you do roll one.
Short answer: don’t. Roll something that doesn’t fail badly in a dungeon, like a guardian.

/sighguardians and theif are so boring kit wise and warrior seem braindeadish blah
I’ve got 4 80s – necro/ranger/warrior/thief. I use the warrior more for dungeons. For other stuff I tend to use something else as I find it a bit on the boring side. I also find the thief boring too even though it’s flavour of the month. Play what you want to play ultimately – just find people to run with who aren’t so picky. Or roll one character just for speed runs alone and put the tokens in your bank.
I made a necro to 80 and well everyone treats me like crap telling me necro is trash for farm runs etc etc
was gonna quit but decided to give another class a goHow are rangers in pve/wvw ? Will they get into speed runs or they on the same boat as necros?
try gw2lfg.com if u havnt
tonnes of people across all servers looking for group, you’ll surely find one
i’m having a lot of fun on the ranger fyi, maybe you’ll like it who knows
Ranger can toss a bunch of buffs. Currently run a semi spirit build. 0/0/30/10/30. GS axe/horn. Rangers can toss all sorts of buffs. Even picked up runes of Altruism to further compliment my heal/tank/support build. Stone Spirit is epic as it shares protection every 10 seconds. The key with Spirits is you need to place them properly to get the most out of them. Their passive buffs have an insane range and if you stick them in a corner they will buff allies and stay clear of AoE. Nature spirit is equally epic for healing and rallying parties. Search and Rescue to bring back dead players caught in no man’s land.
Rangers bring a butt load of utility if you build for it, same as any class. Yes, our utility comes differently and can be a pain sometimes when we place things wrong, but the utility is still there. (hint, never take walking spirits trait, you are only asking for your spirits to get caught in AoE)
Please stop talking as if this game would save the world.
It’s just a game.
Play whatever you like, try to understand your class as best as you can and ignore all those WoW like elitist.
I want to play a ranger, I will play a ranger, I have a good guild I can play with and…. I PLAY.
Play is the word. Play. It’s a game. I’m so sick of all this drama, almost turned me away from this game and from this class I always liked.
If you feel the need to be needed in order to get fun, there’s something very wrong.
Play, ignore the elitists, the “fast run because I can’t loose my precious time I have better to do” people.
It’s all that simple.
