Rangers and stun breakers : both of them
While I was researching a new build, I checked the wiki to decide on a suitable
stun breaker. Every class has at least 4 (mesmer has 5.)
Rangers have two: Lightning Reflexes and Signet of Renewal.I didn’t want Lightning Reflexes as i was building for sword/warhorn. (Sword 2 duplication.)
So why not Signet of Renewal ? (Pet is likely dead already.)On two of my ranger builds, Lightning Reflexes does the trick. As I’m “in the rear with the
gear” stuns don’t bother much unless I’m stunned in a red circle. Can anyone guess why we have so few(er) stun breaks ? Or am I understanding the dynamics of the class wrong?
B/c you have an awesome elite called rampage as one…
I am not sure if that was sarcasm or not, as many classes have 4 stun breaks and a higher uptime of stability coming from multiple abilities (meaning boon corruption and stealing affect it less). I would rather have RaO half duration and half CD.
LR is still good with sword, at least in pvp. It really helps with those emergency getaways. Ranger condition removal is also pretty bad, btw.
I think the pet is the reason why. When other professions get stunned, they are locked down completely, when the Ranger gets stunned, the pet is still free to move around and deal damage.
The brown bear and Spirit of Nature can also remove stun, if you use their active skills just before being stunned. Healing Spring removes a condition at each pulse, so it works as stun removal when you’re standing in it.

Slightly off here Kasama; the bear, spirit, and healing spring remove conditions-such as immobilize. Stun is not a condition, you need an ability that specifically breaks stun to become “unstunned”.
But I see your logic about the pet being able to attack while ranger is stunned or immobilized as a possible reason for why rangers are lacking in that department.
You also have stun/cc immunity once every 90s in the survival tree.

I did not know that. But now that I read about stun on the wiki, it does seem that condition removal is useless against it.

I exclusively use Lightning Reflexes, but it is bugged sometimes. It will trigger often without doing nothing.
I think it needs to be on par with my Thieves “2” ability on the sword, that gets you even out of roots.
80 Thief – 80 Warrior – 80 Guardian – 80 Ranger
80 Mesmer – 80 Necromancer
odd i was toying with engineer the other day, and it seemed like they only had 2 as well.
that said, we do have 2 anti stun traits (shared anguish i think, and hide in plain sight). we also have access to a whole bunch of evades/extra endurance/ vigor to help us dodge those stuns to begin with.
we also have access to stability thru rampage as one or a traited signet of the wild. and we’re also on the back line a lot. so that to me seems like a lot of ways to deal with stun.
that, and lightning reflexes / SoR are two of our best utilities anyways, most of the time u can find a reason to take at least one.
Ranger has very few stun breakers, but I’d go so far as to say LR is one of the best any profession has access to. It never leaves my bar, at the very least it’s another free dodge (for keeping bonus damage with full endurance).
Saladtha (Lv 80 salad sidekick to bears) | Dunelle (Lv 80 eviscerating muppet)
Karmell (Lv 80 human might dispenser) | Vast says hi~.
Ranger has a 50% endurance regeneration trait so you should be able to dodge any stuns which aren’t instant to begin with. Their shortbow and shortsword has a built it dodge. Their dogs have built in knockdowns. 2 knockdowns within 40 seconds to make your enemy burn two of their stun breaks. I don’t know if you can switch pets while stunned but if you can switching to a fresh dog who will knockdown whomever stunned you negates that stun. The rangers weakness is their lack of stability. They can only keep it up 1/6 of the time with their elite and can be easily removed with a boon removal sigil or ability. Whereas your opponent might have more on demand stability to negate the dogs knockdown. Rangers have 0 boon removal except for sigil.

That 50% Endurance regen sounds good, until you know other classes can attain Vigor 100% of the time like the Guardian, Mesmer, and I believe even the Elementalist, while the Thief gets Endurance back, when they dodge, which stacks with the 40% Endurance regen from food giving the Thief a near permanent 100% Endurance Regen, while the Rangers 50% Endurance regen will NOT stack with food (I tested this).
To add insult to injury nothing the Ranger has will get them out of root, while every teleport my Thief has gets me out of root, and the Thief has a spammable stun breaker with the sword #2 ability which will remove virtually anything, and is far, far more useful.
Do stun abilities, and attacks look any different than an auto attack?
Just saying.
80 Thief – 80 Warrior – 80 Guardian – 80 Ranger
80 Mesmer – 80 Necromancer
Personally, I think stuns are not the problem, the immobilize condition is.
How about Hornet Sting or Serpent’s Strike removing immobilize, just like Engineers Overcharged Shot? What about Lightning Reflexes removing cripple, chilled and immobilize just like Thieve’s Withdraw and Roll for Initiative? That way Signet of Renewal would stop being mandatory on my bar.
