I think you get the general idea, so I’ll elaborate on people WvW comments on depending on the build.

Zerg: Traps. And this is fairly meh because they apparently have a 3 person hit cap instead of the normal 5. Also, it’s largely condition damage which in my experience is pretty meh in WvW since conditions get cleared soooo quickly even in unorganized play.

Roaming: I guess any build could work here, but it’s a pain to switch over from traps. And traps is probably the easiest to solo camps with.

None of the above, depending on the competence of those around you.

Say you’re with a good group of non-rangers: They’ll do whatever you do, but better. You’d be better off just going warrior or one of the classes that Anet designed with a hint of competence.

Say you’re with a meh group- List compiled below.

PvP: Depends. You’ll usually be skinned alive, stuck on a stick and made into tasty ranch-dipped Charr fritters. If this isn’t the usual, you’ll probably do -okay-. I’ve seen under rare circumstances Rangers doing good, but only do I see professionals doing ‘great’ on the forums.

PvE: Depending on your build and gear, you can shine here. Given, everybody else will have flashlights while you will be a half-depleted candle, but hey, you’ll get by if you do well. Try hard and believe in yourself and whatnot… If you’re particularly good, you might lead groups or level off with your better-designed compatriots. Just don’t expect to be invited to that CoF run.

WvW: Not to be confused with sPvP. You can support your team here in a multitude of ways. Key word ‘support’. You’ll never be leading any charges unless you want to be torn to bear-spattered pieces by a hail of auto-attacks. You’ll never be one-shotting enemies or scourging enemy camps or descending upon their scouts with vicious abandon. No, those jobs are for better-equipped specialists. In short, you can either shine or suffer here, depending on how you consider it. I take the role of a defender most of the time with my longbow. Not the best weapon, but it gets the job done and the tops of walls are an environment in which that horrid ‘1’ mechanic actually works in my favor.

Open-world: Here, the Ranger’s full potential is realized. You are free to fight and kite as you choose, the glaring flaws of your profession making far less of an impact on you and anyone you travel with. There is no pressure to do high DPS or fight for an objective here, in most cases. You are free to do as you please, and here, the ‘jack-of-all-trades’ mentality of the developers benefits you rather than holding you back. I find wandering Tyria as a ranger to be the most fun of any of the options presented.

Wvw average
Zerg good
Roaming good
Solo one of the weakest but strategically outstanding

Pvp average
Group flexible
Solo more of a hit and runner type

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger

If you really want to play it, go play it.. You’ll get good with it and you’ll notice that your PvE, WvW and PvP will be a breeze..

Oh, and ignore the QQ about rangers and how useless they are and how crap the pet is and all that.. It takes some time and skill to get you completely comfortable with the class and its playstyle, but apparently not all have that time..

Legendary weapons can be hidden now!
No excuse anymore for not giving ‘hide mounts’-option
No thanks to unidentified weapons.

Yeps, I am a ranger commander.. Even better, I’m a glass cannon ranger commander.. :-)

The thing is that I never use my commander tag for PUG zergs.. I pop it just once in a while when doing some guild stuff.. So there is no need for me to be in the front of the attack, leading my zerg to victory.. I can just lay back, rain down some mayhem, and (ab)use the massive evades a ranger has..

Edit/Addendum: If you choose to lead a zerg as a ranger, you’ll have to be a bit more tanky than I am of course..
