Rangers pets to weak defensively
Not to be nitpicky, but *too. Really, really learn when to use too, to and two.
Also many people have the same opinion of the pets. The bears and some drakes (ice drake and arctodus) are very tanky, which is great for PvE, but even the really durable ones with a char traited for defense don’t last long period in PvP anything.
That may be the case for others, I don’t know. I’m specced into Beastmaster so my pets have really great stats and don’t die very easily at all (in fact, my bird pets have as much health and toughness as I do, and I use a Knight’s Amulet). I can use attack pets and they still live plenty long. Again though, don’t have any experience with non-pet builds so I don’t know if they die too quickly or not for those builds. I do know, however, that an increase in base stats would make traited pets really, really good… perhaps too good.
Hello bears? BEARS.
If you run a Beastmastery build your pet will rarely die if at all.
If you don’t run a Beastmastery build your pet will most likely have to be a bear or a devourer.
This is all by design. The sole reason the bear pets are pure tanks is so you can use them with little to no points invested in Beastmastery. It’s the same for every other class, not investing in their Class Feature makes it less reliable.
With some healing my Wolf tanks bosses like the last boss in TA Explore mode and minor bosses in every other dungeon without dieing at all. Pets are also immune to almost every scripted AoE effect in dungeons and events (400 damage around Claw of Jormag etc.).
If you are talking about sPvP, that’s another story…
Please, stop the QQ threads.
more deadly than any that walks this earth. Put aside the Ranger.
Become who you were born to be. I give hope to men. I keep none for myself.
I understand the OP, but I don’t agree with your analysis.
For pvp, it is important for the pet to give you two things, dps and utility. On the flip side, a dead pet gives you neither of those. The pets with the great abilities have to be balanced by low defensive stats and hps, otherwise they would become easy auto-use options.
If dogs, who can f2 root, snare, and knockdown could withstand as many hits as a bear, who has much worse abilities, why would anyone use a bear? If you straight buffed defensive abilities across the board, bears would become useless, since every other pet would be able to stay alive like them, but they would have not so great abilities still.
On the same vein, if you buffed stats across the board, full beastmaster rangers would see silly increases in pets abilities.
You either deal with the pet dying and try to get as much out of it as you can. Or you choose to use the few options that you can to make the pet better. Thats part of class balance and I believe it’s working well.

Pets are tank alright, i use bears to tank in cursed shore and they do fine. Even sometimes DPS pets like cats or hawks can do good again 1v1, against multiple mobs well they cant handle it. Problem is in cursed shore those zombies dont hold the agro with pets but whatever is all good.
I always have a bear with me.. Never fought without it.
Second pet differs, felines or birds usually, to get some dps going. If they’re almost dead, I change to bear. (don’t be too late, ‘caus when they’re dead the cooldown to change pet increases a lot)
Though I’d like to fight with different mixes, and not always to be bound to bears…
Then I’d have to change my traits and utility skills and then I’m guessing I’d be fine too —> signet of stone and signet of the wild for utility skills. And some points in beast mastery and matching traits like --> compassion training and natural healing.
With that combination of utility skills and traits I think the more squishier pets like birds, felines and spiders will hold up pretty good too.

They are immune to most AoE? I didn’t know this. Do you have a source?
I don’t to PvP so everything I do is PvE.
In the world my pets are just fine. I use a cat as DPS and have a bear to swap to if needed. Bear rarely if ever dies, cat rarely dies but only because I can swap to the bear OR stealth (F2 for jaguar) before it dies.
In a dungeon, that’s a whole new story. On boss fights I’m often without a pet. It’s either dead or by my side doing nothing because it will die the instant I send it in. I just feel something needs to be done to help prevent pets from dieing so easily. I like how in that “other” game, pets took almost zero AoE damage.
I don’t spec far into beastmastery at all. My current spec is (20/30/10/0/10) and the other I have toyed with is (30/30/0/0/10). I’m primarily a piercing arrow crit ranger w/Masters Bond in Beastmastery.

A lot of people going on about how great the pets are going to have a rude awakening. In regular pve pets are mostly ok, mostly, however in dungeons this is another story. Having 15 points in beast mastery my pet is still dead most of the time. Get ready to hear “My pets down” a lot. This happens even with pulling pets out of danger, using your heal on them, etc, this is traited so pets heal for more, heal on crit.
