Returning player here, state of the Ranger?
Nothings changed much. Longbow was glitched where it provided perma fury and became viable, but that was quickly nerf-fixed. We got a new spirit though… not sure why lulz.
Welcome back to GUILD WARRIORS 2!!!
We all got new heal skills, warrior is OP ofcourse. Ours? Well.. I hope you like more spirits which can easily die, and only have a 35% chance to heal ^.^
Rangers have gotten better overall, although others still want to stay on that “Rangers still suck” bandwagon. Sure the Ranger isn’t as good as some other classes in certain situations, but the Ranger is at a better place than it was when you stopped playing.
I would say it’s worth playing it again. If you have fun with it then I don’t see why not. Like I said, the Ranger takes a lot more to make it good than an “average” player.
Longbow auto attack aftercast has been reduced, short, mid range damage increased a bit, we have stealth on #3 now.

Rangers are as kitten as every other class that plays this game. So nothing has changed, really. Don’t bother with the forum; just go make a ranger.
He already has a ranger. How about reading the thread as well as the topic?

It’s honestly all of the same builds and playstyles and really nothing has changed at all. Still Spirit Ranger meta for pvp, still the same exact working builds, etc.

I feel like ranger is in a solid place, power builds are becoming more viable (they just need one final nudge imo, seeing as how perma fury made them extremely good).
Spirits, traps, and Bm are still all viable, power based builds are doing pretty good for roaming LB builds, but overall not a whole lot is different.

Double bow works great at the moment, yea it’s still subpar for the risk and more fury would be nice but at least it’s fun to play
It’s always worth coming back and playing as a ranger.

How do you make that work? I occasionally run into dat warrior dude, who can just run in your face come rain or snow. They usually run hammer/gs, and there is no keeping them out. I can’t imagine trying to stay alive with a shortbow instead of a greatsword.

When i run double bow i put sigs of hydromancy on both of them, gotta use your evade, knock back, cripple and stealth very wisely to keep yourself just out of range of the enemy (or very far out of range of the enemy, your call), I also found that having LR and MT makes that SIGNIFICANTLY easier to do (i will use LR to open up the distance if i know they don’t have a lot of CC).

For WvW, Ranger is a lot of fun. I switch between 4 different builds depending on how I feel at the time. Each plays differently.
You can beat any class or lose to any class. I would enjoy myself even more though if there wasn’t the Thief class. Bane of my existence. Can be having a real fun session before running into a Thief or two. Win or lose vs Thieves it doesn’t matter. Fighting Thieves annoys the hell out of me. Too many of those fights and I will log off. Or, I end up using one of my 4 builds…the troll thieves build. High burst Rapid fire build = they die when they think they can get away with stealth.
I still say ranger is a mess that needs a big fix; traits are still in the “why is it even in this trait line I don’t even” land, pets are still probably the worst designed mechanic in game, etc. etc.
Warriors are still the better "ranger’ class in nearly every way; better trait synergy, mechanic actually works, deals more damage, has better survivability, cool downs on similar traits/abilities are far lower, etc.
I love it when players say a ranger takes more than the average player to play well; take that above average skill onto a class like the warrior and you can way farther with it. Generally when a class has more skill involved, it should reward more; however, ranger damage is sub par, survivability is maybe somewhere close to the warriors at most, mechanic fails compared to warrior/thief/etc.
Longbow still has a much better feel to it than the warrior longbow/rifle; still very much a work in progress with viability (well… it’s viable and has always been so, but just isn’t anywhere close to useful except at max distance where you still miss out on any group support opportunities…).
Go try playing a warrior, then come back and play your ranger; you too will feel the issues with the ranger magnify about 10x more.
My Ranger is my main. Next up I made a Warrior. After playing Warrior for a few hours in WvW I always come back to the class I feel stronger on …My Ranger
You are not playing the right warrior build it seems, maybe not your playstyle.

I dunno, I run hidden pistol and LR, MT doesn’t feel that good for me. Warriors have too many leaps on weaponskills. They are a nightmare to fight, especially if they have stability. I just don’t feel a 2-3 second immobilize will help me out there much. By the time my dogs can get their F2 off, a warrior is out of range for them, and in melee range for me. It is really annoying. But even so, I’m loving LB/GS right now.

Not the build, but more likely a lack of skill. I was basically responding to this …Go try playing a warrior, then come back and play your ranger; you too will feel the issues with the ranger magnify about 10x more.
Warriors are obviously in a good place now. 6 months ago when I was on my Ranger and fought a Warrior I felt bad because they didn’t have much of a chance. Now the roles are reversed

Muddy Terrain is also a pulsing cripple area, kite them back and forth through it, kinda like you would do with frost trap or w/e it’s called in WoW, frost trap also works btw, even if you aren’t a trapper, just throw it down, stay stationary ontop of it, and wait for the surprise!

Rangers are a hard class to play well.
We were buffed in terms of damage and build diversity.
Rangers have much better build/gear synergy on the defensive side using spirits (AE vigor, Protection, Huge Regen, Might Stacking, Burning add etc)
Bow rangers (power and crit) often lack good survivability without extremely good game play (it exists but is hard to use because it focuses on skills and evades/knockbacks etc)
In zergs with a lot of damage flying around we are weak being backline and without significant AE. Spirit and Traps perhaps as exceptions (the first more than the later)
Our pets still struggle to survive multiple indirect sources of damage. They still are clumsy and slow.
Mighty swap now applies 3 stacks of might to YOU and the pet. It has become a standard.

Ya, Anet kind of decided that class balance was turbo lame and made the Warrior amazing at pretty much everything. They reined it in a bit with the last patch but they are still extremely solid and probably won’t be going back any time soon, if ever.
Ranger still sucks…try playing a warrior, necro, or mesmer and you will clearly see a huge difference. Ranger takes skill to play but that skill only goes so far when you apply the same amount of that skill into any other class you are far more rewarded. Don’t listen to this crap that ranger is in a good place. I would love to see what you other so called good ranger players have to bring to the table so please hit me up in game so I can prove to you that ranger still sucks =D
Roll a Mesmer pinky for PvP or Warrior if you want to PvE

Hi guys
Stopped playing 4-6 months ago, around the time when spirit regen was huge, shortbow range was nerfed and Arenanet was still claiming Longbow was viable. I think I was playing a power LB ranger just because I like Longbow, but in pvp I was a spirit condition ranger.
What’s changed, how are Rangers at the moment? Worth coming back and playing Ranger again?
Amins on youtube has some good builds – Merry Christmas!
If people are saying in here to do “this or that” it’s not going to help unless they post vids or a person to contact – there are great Rangers in WvW and in PvE we just own since I can and have taken on Champions by myself many times with different builds.
for spvp is ranger quite good , for pve not bat , www ranger suck as a lot
The state of the Ranger is…problematic. ArenaNet sees the Ranger “in a good place”. They have made microscopic changes for good, but 99% of the issues are still there. This may sound exaggerated, but it is truth. I love the Ranger, was my 2nd most played and loved character in all game modes, but you kinda lose the fun if you see how better other classes can perform in the game. Now the Ranger fights for the second last position for me.
I still enjoy the Ranger in sPvP, but a big problem of GW2 balancing is, that they just don’t make real splits between PvP and PvE. PvE often suffers. In GW1 we had really good splits between both game modes, why don’t they implement this also for GW2?
Another thing is, ArenaNet should stop being week-kneed and have the courage to admit mistakes. They should rework whole traitlines, some weapon skills and utility skills. But I think they are really serious about the statement that the Ranger is all in all fine, so I fear this will never happen…
If you look at the two threads; List of buffs and List of nerfs, you can form your own ideas about the changes to Ranger.
