Rework Idea: Make Power Rangers great again
A lot of valid points there.
The number 1 problem I find with ranger is that most of it’s autos are trash DPS. Take greatsword, so slow clunky and deals horrendous damage. Sword isn’t much better, its just slightly faster. Axe auto is ew. Longbow is powerful at range, but not so much in raids. However its auto at melee range still hits harder than a greatsword.
Mesmer also has this issue but at less they have phantaams.

Have you tested Power ranger for DPS since the trait changes?

GS is not a DPS weapon. It’s a utility weapon with powerful defense and CC. Sword is semi-DPS with evasion. Dagger on SoulB is looking to be straight up DPS if built right.
“great again”, again ? when have they ever been great to begin with ?
question:Is dagger a bleed weapon? I was reading so what would i go for as secondary weapon for going full nothing but just dmg?

During the beta >_>
But yeah, it wasn’t really great. Long ago, it was our only option, which I guess does or doesn’t count depending on the perspective….
Will update once Path of Fire releases.

Yep, it’s about the same ~15k with condi utility and elite skills, about 11 without them. The numbers in the post are rough estimates though, I didn’t calculate anything precisely.

True, but I don’t see why can’t they be viable DPS options in PvE. Dagger would be a good option, but we’d have to give up one of the trait lines to just use it. And Soulbeast trait line is so-so for power.

Well, you don’t just do something great, you do it great again
Power rangers were considered fine before the raids were released, but at that point anything was played in dungeons and fractals.

And Soulbeast trait line is so-so for power.
Well, we don’t really know how soulbeast is for power until we find out all the details on how Elevated Bond affects other traits.
“Traits that affect your pet may affect you differently while in beastmode.”

Hmm, someone claimed 22k previously. I can’t test for myself currently, but I will when I can.
For the GS to be a viable DPS weapon in PvE, all the skills would need to be split from PvP and WvW because it is quite powerful already when played well in those aspects of the game.

Hm, true, didn’t know this little detail about the beastmode, thanks for the info!

Wow, 22k actually sounds impressive. I did my tests with 1 or 2 exotics, but it can’t be that much of a difference. I’d be really interested in your results.
Concerning the skills – true, most likely. I tried to kinda make Maul viable in both PvP and PvE through the 2-charges system with an inner cd, but that’d require a lot of testing. But I’m pretty sure that even splitting the damage numbers of all GS skills shouldn’t be a problem, as many skills already do more/less damage in PvP.

That 22k was referring to max DPS possible, with likely S/A and LB, not the GS.
Although, I’d like to see the DPS from something like this. If a cruelty sigil was added, we could hit 292% crit damage. Scholar would be better if you can keep above 90%. That would be self buffed dps, if the raid buffs were used, you’d swap out the might traits for clarion and resounding and if you can get your health below 75%, Remorseless may be worth a try over Predators Onslaught, especially if you need vuln and then the Rage runes instead of Scholar.

I consider GS defensive abilities as backup for close combat glass cannon wearing medium armor.

Move number
2https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Maul_(ranger_greatsword_skill) Is a aoe dmg attack that adds vulnerabilities, but depending on your positioning its possible to hit nothing.
Number 5
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Hilt_Bash is kinda a gap closer, or could be used to interrupt skills.
More than a couple of skills are more or less dps skills. We even have a gap closer skill to literally jump on top of enemies.

That’s exactly what they are.

I’m not exactly sure what you are getting at mate. Those skills are not really DPS oriented, they are great for burst and mobility, but that does not correlate to high DPS numbers. Where burst/mobility excels is in PvP/WvW.
. And Soulbeast trait line is so-so for power.
It got a permanent 7 % damage modifier from one of the minors, a 10 % modifier as a GM trait (that is near permanent if it procs on percentage, which we can only assume it does). Stacking relevant damage modifiers is pretty much all there is to pve power damage, trait wise. Soulbeast is only beaten by marksmanship in that regard.
The problems with ranger and power builds in pve are the autoattacks of greatsword and sword, and I honestly think that neither the evades, the defensive capabilities nor the pet adds up for it (that’s not me saying they are bad, that’s me saying there is no reason it should stay how it currently is). Not in pvp either. No one would be bothered if Anet buffed ranger sword damage, yet we’re still taxed by it for aforementioned reasons, and have been ever since the beta nerfs.
A greatsword with a leap, burst skill, block and a stun should still have some decent damage on the auto chain, even if that last skill on the chain is an evade. It’s not ruining the thematics of it, nor is it ruining balance.

I tried some builds post patch and got around 18k with all of the following:
S/a+wh (quickdraw)
S/a+lb (quickdraw)
S/a+gs (vicious quarry)
I used nature magic with 6 boons for a 6% damage modifier.
Can surely be improved by an air sigil (I had water sgil on axe and intelligence on gs in addition to force) and less errors (canceling aa) in the rotation. Perhaps beast mastery is more dps, I did not try it.
Either way 18-22k is still only ~60% of what you should bring to raids. Against big hitboxes, you are half a guadian or ele.

BM would be more DPS, but not enough to make much of a difference if it is that low. Will be months before I can test for myself, but I will do detailed ones to post up if anyone doesn’t do it prior to me getting home.

Either that, or front load the damage so that you can skip the evade and go more damage focused by canceling the greatsword 1 chain after the second one.
For PvE? Yeah never been optimal DPS because of low weapon damage coefficients. Blame the forced pet free tank and crazy range of the longbow.
For the PvP formats? They’ve been pretty dominant except in ZvZ since HoT, and with the last patch, they can be played anywhere. Berserker longbow is a strong build right now, and looks to be stronger with Soulbeast.

There is to much weapon swapping in the mechanics design right now. I think longbow is not meant to work like that. Since the weapon benefits from a longer distance swapping it for a melee weapon like S/A or GS means: 1) leaving your optimal firing position 2) dealing less damage while you getting back to it after re-swap. Longbow should do decent damage on its own and be swapped for secondary weapon only for occasion like if enemies are getting too close. Choosing a weapon for appropriate situation rather than just mashing swap key would make some different gameplay. I mean, condi-skirmisher style weapon juggling is quite fun, I like it, but it should be an option, not only possible way to use the weapon swap key in this game.
I just realised that Maul gives your pet a +50% damage boost to its next skill. If Beast Mode allows /you/ to get that bonus instead of your pet which you can use on Worldly Impact/Chomp/Tail Swipe instead of your awful 1 skill, and Beastmastery becomes good enough to replace Skirmishing (so that your maul and beast mode skills are on a lower cooldown so that you need to resort to autoattacks less often, it might actually be somewhat decent.
I guess that it’s something for me to test tomorrow.
