Rifles... I want one
Do you even lift, bro?
Not me, maybe I stick to stereotypes too much but I don’t feel that rifles have anything to do with the ranger profession and definitely would not want one. Bows for me!

I agree, like the warrior is master of all melee, the ranger should be master of all ranged, they need to have firearms also. But anet also, needs to make ranger, able to 1vs1 the 2nd worse class in the game and win first.
Doesn’t fit the caracter, leave it to warriors and engineers… bows all the way !
Why not?
In a world were firearms exists, it makes perfect sense for hunters to use them.

Conflicted here. I’d be fine with Rangers using guns as it will carry a kind of native american vibe and I could see it working, but image alone in this game kind of restricts it.
That said, more options is nothing but a good thing so I’m all cool with it.

Do you see the problem here?
Also this topic has been done to death.
Whenever I fight “Sniper”-type enemies, I feel envy. Like the Bandit Riflemen in CM Exploration. I realize that Rangers shouldn’t have “all” the long range weapons and that Engineers needed something for themselves… but still.
Anyone else feel the same?
Nah, i’m more envious of the archers in CM that throw up 10s of distortion and go TROLOLO!! as they burst people down…

This is a pretty contraversial issue since there are a lot of rangers that are completely against bringing any sort of industrial-influenced weapon to the ranger class, but personally, I’d love it if they did something like this.
However, I don’t think this will happen for gameplay issues if nothing else. Rangers already have two 2h ranged weapon options, so there’s not really a niche to fill with a rifle unless they did something like change short or long bow to do more AoE and made the rifle more of a single target specialized weapon.
I think rifles would be a good addition to the skill set. Think of a rifle ranger as Hawkeye from Last of the Mohicans.
If rangers had rifles then engineers would have to have bows, and that makes even less sense. Besides, guns would scare our pets away!

No. No industrially manufactured weapons for nature-bleepers.
Better to create a light armored rifle user so that the weapon is represented across all types.

Pets can be trained for not being scary about rifles
on topic: yes, i would like to have one too. But our ungabunga Plateogres are favored in classdesign so it won’t happen…
rifle ranger is ingame
its called warrior rifle spec
and omg is it fun 1500 range kill shot (perfect aginst glass connons and hits like a truck in pve. and 1200 for all other skills (volley hurts alot to) ).
oo and very high base hp heavy armor and awesome looking heavy armor sets.
on topic rifles would not hurt rangers as it would be an “optinal” playstyle.
And you could use the sylvari rifles, they are made from plants and fire seeds, like plants can fire seeds. so that makes sense for a bio rifle, when doing the kodan heart quest in frost gorge one of the polar bears says sylvari grow weapons from seeds.
Fractal lvl 80 – 126 AR
What purpose would a rifle serve? Weapons in this game are only aesthetic. The only real difference between a rifle and a bow is appearence (and projectile speed, but that’s being fixed). The devs could reskin the shortbow to be a rifle with no difference. Adding another ranged weapon means it needs to fill a role, but there really isn’t a ranged role to fill for the ranger.
Also the ranger is not the hunter from WoW. The ranger in GW lore is more of a druid. Adding a manufactured mechanical weapon like a rifle goes against the theme.

But that would mean making a brand new type of weapon that only one class would use. Think about what a nightmare that would be for the trading post and for PVE.
I agree, like the warrior is master of all melee, the ranger should be master of all ranged.
Except the warrior is master of weapons in general, including ranged ones.

Also ranger doesn’t mean ranged weapons. It means someone who ranges (explores large areas), or a soldier trained in guerrilla warfare. If ranger was master of ranged we wouldn’t have the awesome looking greatsword.
Simple scrap metal can be melted and formed into musket balls out in the field (the patriot) and since the tech is already present why wouldnt a ranger use a rifle or supressed rifle?
I doublt any engineer would bother with downgrading weapons to use a bow when they can blow **** up.
I love it when people say “you can just make more bullets in the wild!”
You need moulds (easy enough to carry around or even make in situ) the metal itself (heavy) and facilities to melt the metal down, a smelter.
The fun bit is the smelter. Melting iron down requires ~ 1.4k degrees Celsius. For context, water freezes at 0 and boils at 100.
So if you’re going to melt iron you need a good fuel that produces heat. That essentially means, certainly in Tyria, coal or charcoal. The latter is more likely, it’s lighter and can be made in the field; it’s effectively wood with all the impurities burn away, leaving you with the carbon.
Charcoal requires it’s own furnace which takes at least a day to make and own set of skills as well. If you get it wrong, the charcoal… isn’t. Alternatively, you actually burn it, leaving ash.
Assuming you have the fuel, the forge has to be built (again, requiring a separate set of skills) the best part of a morning/afternoon to get up to heat, assuming you have the fuel and bellows to heat it up enough in the first place, which you’ll have to pump all the time unless you hitch it up to a machine powered by something like the flow of a river.
Alternatively you can run around with a bow with their larger, easier to replace arrows.
The arrowsheads are larger, can be sharped and refixed onto the shaft If things get really desperate you can always make the shaft of the arrow really sharp and go without a metal arrowhead at all.
The shafts are wood, and if you’re in the wilderness, where there will be trees. It’s simply a matter of finding the right tree, easy enough when you know what you’re looking for.
Feathers are needed for fletching, which is effectively any large bird. Even if you can’t find any, if you have some packed in advance it won’t really mean much (light as a feather?)
This is all using skills your predecessors have perfected over hundreds of years.
The thing about ranger is this:
Ranger, based on lord of the rings, was a dungeons & dragons class that does a lot of what it does in guild wars 2. They are dextrous combatants with less health and armor than the actual warriors, masters of dual-wielding, able to have a pet and charm pets, have legendary bow skills and use stealth and traps to outsmart the enemy. They also used martial weapons, so sword, axe, greatsword, dagger and more.
Guild Wars 2 has all of that:
- Traps
- Bows
- Melee
- Dexterity (every sword skill is a dodge, and ‘attack while evading’ skills are common)
- Pet
- TINY bit of stealth (named hide in plain sight, another obvious d&d wink)
- All the weapons that count
I prefer that to the idea that they should be the best at ranged and we need to let warriors be the best at melee. That is sad to me – it’s limiting your own options for no good reason.
Lastly, I don’t think there’s that many skills you can give a ranger with a rifle. The bows already cover some of the skills that warriors & engineers & thieves get. They should stick to bows and eventually add more skills to them both – that seems more of an option!
.. rant ^^
This has been suggested before, Survivalist will use anything to there advantage to survive bow or not.
Gw based on its lore “rangers” were more Druid like, casting nature spells and such, since gw2 has altered that path.
If they did have “warden” class im sure there leftover animations and other resources that can be used, sadly most of the time things like those are either recycled into New classes or destroyed.
off topic; Im intrested in what classes the’ll be for the next expansion, Assuming they follow past expansion rule. Cantha will be next (Maybe) if so Anet will have to be pretty Imaginative Since “Sins” are now thieves and “ritualist” are now Guardians…but anywho enough off topicness.
9/3/13 rip
Someone needs to let the Army Rangers know they’re doing it all wrong. Those guys are always running around with guns.
Seriously though, one of the most famous “rangers” in history is Daniel Boone and that dude was killer with a Kentucky long rifle. Literally!

Lead. Not iron or steel. Lead slugs…. lead melts at about the third of the temperature your of basic/average sized camp fire. And you wont need t lug around massive amounts of lead to make a hell of alot of slugs.

Sorry typing on phone at work outside in the freezing cold.
Make Warrior..throw on ogre runes. Done. Or make Engineer to have even more fun.
All I know is that when I see a Charr Ranger, a Bow just feels unnatural in his/her hands.

I’m sure in real life if a bow could surpass the range of a sniper rifle with just as much accuracy and fire speed, and rain down arrows over an encampment like a handheld personnel mortar, more people in real life would use longbows.
Ranger has a lot of meanings and i don’t think Anet had any in mind when making the class. They look like they’re going for a legolas with pets and nature magic, and i love that theme.
OT: Now i know where boone’s name comes from in fallout NV.

sheesh, how many times must it be said? Ranger does not mean ‘ranged weapon master’, it means someone who roams ranges of land, as in a scout, sentinel, or nomad.
Warriors are weaponmasters (melee or ranged), rangers are versatile survivalists. I don’t think rangers should get rifles simply because they already lots of ranged options compared to their melee options.

+ since when is it quantity over quality? Give them a rifle and it’ll be half-done, nonsense skills that other professions sort of have. xD

I’d like to have rifles, but I’d also like to have a new weapon type: Crossbows.
The only weapon I like with my Ranger is shortbow. I don’t like long bow due to the shot distance damage variance.. speed doesn’t bother me, but maybe this can be solved by making pets hold aggro (I’m already in full berserkers, why are enemies coming after me!).
Screw Rifles, Bows or even Pistols, Ranger would own everyone with SLINGSHOTS! Yea baby >:)
Xbow sounds much better but rifle no thanks

Dual wielding crossbows… at least we die in style !
