Yes and no, most will attempt to sneak attack you at melee range to pulled off the monster steal condi combo. When steal is traited for Mug and Bewildering Ambush, your hp will drop super fast unless you cleanse it all off very quickly.

It is extremely important, no matter your profession that you dodge away from the thief the moment sneak attack starts to go off. I understand this will take some quick reflexes and practice, but it is the single most important thing you can do yo negate the full burst from melee range. (sneak attack, shadow strike, steal, shadow strike)

It actually clears 2 conditions from you, but it is also rubbish at the same time and not worth having while roaming. So many better options.

Condi thieves are a troll build. Just leave.

Chickpea poultry soup is -28%, and paired with either melandru or hoelbrak runes should be sufficient as a passive option. It is also a lot cheaper than leek and lemongrass poultry soups, so you can afford to “waste” it without worrying about losing coin every 30 minutes.

In any case you should have at least one active condition removal option – for tight situations (ie immobilise or high damaging stacks of something).

Most everyone above has covered the points, but I wanted to mention I never roam without sic’em! on my bar mainly to deal with thieves, mesmers, and for a while there those stupid guard and warrior roamers using that stupid rune of infiltration build (so glad that was a pasing fad….that was annoying as hell). You can always flip the skill out for something else if you come up to a fight you know you won’t need it on, but it’s always better to have it when you need it than not. Nothing is funnier than a spambot thief blowing every stealth skill he has and wondering why they don’t work then attempting to run away. The lolz are for dayz
