HI everyone.

Im having hard time to chose from ranger / thief as my alt. My main is guardian.

So im here for some input on ranger class. I would be doing a lot of WvW/spvp and some dungeons.

As far As i’ve seen many ppl say totaly different things about rangers. Some say they suck, others proove them wrong. I’ve watched almost every single Spvp/WvW video with rangers and I really don’t know what to think…

Most builds I see are sword/horn / Gs / shortbow beastmaster builds.

Is it really nessesary to have BM 20-30 points into to be effective ?

Is there any place for Zerker SB/LB builds ? or Strong Melee GS + sword/dagger build which won’t fall down in matter of seconds ?

Most of those weapons are carried with Toughness/vit gear and toughness/bm traits… so is it only way to play ranger like this ?

Also hows ranger tagging in late game ( cursed shore ) ?

I still enjoy Ranger, but some of the claims you see on the forums have some truth in them. We do have some things that could use attention and I’m still standing that in time it will be done. We’re a jack of all trades class where we can really do anything, but we are not overly amazing at anything. Most of what you will find are BM bunker builds, a trap build, and the occasional berserker glass cannon. We don’t presently have a lot of effective build variety however you can still adapt and succeed with a Ranger, or shamelessly complain as others do. Your best bet is to create both and give them a go for a few levels and see what feels the best to you. If Ranger is a class you truly enjoy you will adapt to play how it is designed presently working through the flaws.

This includes an explanation of the stealth trolling rangers have been doing in dubs (makes people claim “hax” and is loads of fun harassment strategty). Think more creatively about how you can combine abilities and maybe you’ll get some of this cheese in before I make it public, which is something I feel like I must do to try and repell the beliefs people have ingrained about this class.

That’s becoz you just start to play ranger. In fact ranger is kinda same as thief, if you want to play cheap then just go BM build and stay back watch your pet to ninja some low lv or HP players (same role as thief). You can be OK for 1v1 situation, but in group fighting especially zerg vs zerg, you basically is just a Thief #2.
If you want versatile, go ele. You will found almost every weapon/build has its place in pvp/WvW.

Chopps, I agree completely and I guess I should had conveyed that a little more from my initial post. I was simply summarizing largely what he will see if he rolls through the Ranger forums as it’s a lot of the same depressing stuff. I personally love Ranger, and have no problems with it as it is the only profession I play. The build I run with now is not one of those mainstream builds that I mentioned before and I agree, there are a lot of options if you get creative. However most of the time when people post in these forums like this they want the quick fix, cookie-cutter approach so I tried to inform him what he was in for in that regard. I stand on the side of yes, Rangers have some problems as all classes do but it’s not the end of the world as most of these forums lead people to believe.

I wanted a mobile archer/scout type character, but I didn’t want a pet, so I made a thief and quite like it.

Pets are kind of central to rangers, so I guess it comes down to whether or not you want pets.

Chopps I would be very interested in seeing this video. I have done my share of complaining but I will be the first to admit it is easy to get tunnel vision and neglect to notice some of the cooler things a class is capable of.

Throw Feathers/Blinding Tuft, Hide in Plain Sight or Runes of Infiltration are the only ways I know Rangers can independently stealth.

Edit: Just thought about this since the Jan update. I guess under water you could do a jellyfish “Dark Water” followed by a Drake tail swipe for area stealth. Haven’t tried it but it’s a legitimate combo I would think.
