Yes I can’t imagine anyone using it ever in any situation. It used to be able to revive dead players, but they destroyed that with a nerf, so now it has no use. A downed ally is usually dead before the pet can even path to it.
My greatest beef with ArenaNet is that they say they don’t want to play whack-a-mole and do their balance updates in small steps, but they don’t do that at all. If a Ranger skill gets a nerf it’s usually very destructive and Search & Rescue is a great example. Guard no longer being able to put the pet up or down a WvW wall is another example. And Quickness reduction by 50%. And pet damage reduction by 50%. and the beastmaster minor adept trait switched with the grandmaster trait which noone uses. And the Signet of the Beastmaster moved from Adept to Grandmaster, so signet actives are horrible unless you put 30 points into the power tree. And spirits getting an internal cooldown and their health halved, which they almost reverted in small steps over the course of a year. I’m sure there are many more examples where a nerf completely destroyed a skill to the point of uselessness, but still they claim they don’t play whack-a-mole with their balance updates.

So true it’s sad, I don’t get how skill balance updates usually end up destroying something for the ranger, they could have taken away the long cooldown and the cannot revive when fully dead, I would be fine with that. Make it a 30 second cooldown or something like so.

I’m honestly not a fan of any of the shouts to be honest. Protect Me is the only one that’s marginally good, but if you didn’t need 30 pts in Marks to make signets useful no one would use that either.

Dat needs rework,we will have to wait..Im pretty sure Anet knows that it needs help..
I honestly have no problem with it not being instant, and reviving only one target, as it is not an elite…but I do have a problem with the fact that it rarely actually works or revives anything. Another serious downside is that it doesn’t revive a target you select, or even the nearest downed ally…it’s entirely random.
Sometimes it works well, or used to – there was a time where I saved camps with it often and the skill actually worked, like the usage here in this video from 7 months ago – but at present, it just never seems to work at all, period.
The simplest fix perhaps to this skill that would ensure it is useful in PvP on it’s long recast timer, would be to grant not only 125% movement speed, but stealth, until the action is complete. It would still need to be fixed so it works mind you, but at least it would be something, and reasonable and therefore likely to be done….one hopes.

I think this is one place where they missed the mark on this type of balancing. In my opinion, you don’t go after potency on something like this, you go at the ability to do it multiple times in a relatively short period of time. Neither one of those being an issue before the nerf.
Search and Rescue sucks because Anet ‘booned’ (see Smiter’s Boon) it. It used to be able to revive dead allies, NPCs, etc. They took it out because it allowed people to skip through dungeons somehow…which would have been easier to deal with if they just made it so it can’t revive NPCs. -_-

To OP: you do know that Signet of Undeath (necro’s signet that revives downed players) doenst work in either PvP and WvW right? And that’s simply because auto rezzing is way to powerful.
You can complain that your skill kittens, but if they actually improve it you can bet its gonna be disabled for PvP and WvW. I would prefer if our skill was way worst but actually could be used in every game mode…
I mean, its actually quite weird that a necromancer, which you know, ressurects the death cant ressurect the dead in the presence of other players… Reallly weird

Sorry, it was the first two that came to my mind. But if you want, I can point out that Mesmer illusion of life and Guardian signet of mercy alsoboth work better than search and rescue. And while engis elixer isn’t an instant Rez, it actually works and affects multiple people.
Disclaimer: I wish they would fix other things first, because shouts are kinda terrible anyways. But might as well point this out so they can work on SOMETHIG.

I use it. It’s fine. In a PUG dungeon group I often suspect players will fall over and when they do it’s good to have search and rescue. It’s better now that it only revives downed players as it picks better targets. Despite the cool down, etc, it is still far better than sitting down in a big aoe field and reviving someone yourself. Downed pets can search and rescue.
The last ranger to tell me it was rubbish was in the molten test facility. Somehow I was the only person in the group who could stay on my feet, with the pet and spirit of nature doing my revives, whilst everyone else got downed trying to revive other people.

Ranger has some if not the most God Awful Skills in the game.
Most of them require to much investment in trait lines to be effective.
Traps/Spirits For example, and Signets just to get them to freakin Work on the Ranger.
Whats left is Cruddy Utilities (Muddy Terrain), Sharpening Stone, Lightning Reflex and Pet Shouts…
Pet Shouts being quite possibly some of the kittentiest kitten abilities in the game.

I actually prefer Search and Rescue to most other revive utilities.
Mainly because the other revive utilities usually have a long cast time (I know the Elementalist one has like a 4 second cast or something silly like that, as does the Guardian one) and during that time the target is not getting healed at all, so there’s a half-decent chance they’ll be dead by the time the revive actually goes off if enemies are still attacking them. And if they’re already dead, then its a wasted skill use.
With Search and Rescue, at least constant healing is being done (as with a normal revive) so it can offset enemies attacking the target to some degree. Its not going to save someone being smashed by multiple attackers or anything, but its enough to offset one enemy at least.
There’s also the fact that other revives are “all or nothing” so if you start casting your ridiculously long-cast revive skill and then a couple players go and revive the target manually before it goes off, you just completely wasted your utility. With Search and Rescue, the pet is there speeding up the revival process at least.
Not to say that Search and Rescue is perfect as-is. The pet should heal a bit faster (as fast as a player IMO) and a cooldown reduction would certainly be nice. Though I’d say the cooldown thing is a problem with nearly every revive utility in the game and they should all get a good reduction, really. Perhaps even give the pet Stability during the attack so it can’t be stopped so easily, though that would probably have to be a PvE-specific attribute since it would probably be too good in PvP.

I do love how our classes access to invulnerability (not even true invul) requires our pet to be alive in a situation that would almost guarantee it’s already dead when we need protecting.
I still don’t see the point in “Guard” and they will never fix “Sic ’em”
Well guard used to be good for harassing for a short time, but they fixed that to being useless again.
Even broken Sic’em is still the best of the shouts.
Search and rescue was ok for PvE, now it has no use at all, it should be replaced by an instant or short cast res skill or a different type of shout. After all we have spirit ulti res which can be used for other ppl on your team too
Protect me can save you a couple of hits if you are lucky, but you need to be careful to switch the pet before it dies otherwise it gimps you at the end ( not necessarily a bad thing as it requires some attention to the screen ).

Actually, the CD doesn’t display properly with the trait, it’s actually 144s or so (still god awful).
They need to make it so S&R has the pet rez FASTER than an actual player to make it useful, not kittening slower, especialy if they want to justify how they nerfed it into the kittening ground, i mean seriously if my pet rezzed 20% faster than the average player (same as i do due to speccing for it) i would have NO issue with this skill.
Another thing i’d like would be if it was a ground target like “Guard” it boosts the rezzing speed of all allies in that range and the pet will run around and rez downed allies until he’s killed, i’d say make the pet bigger and glowy with blue and black (just copy paste RaO effects on all allies in the range for simplicities sake) so that there’s counter play to it.

Not anymore, now if someone is defeated they will stop getting healed by the pet, but the pet will still sit there trying to Rez.

Fortunately you can fix that with a keypress.
Was popping both S&R + Nature’sRenewal a Lupi fight for 3 attempts and it still wasn’t enough to keep the other Puggers on my team up even though there was not even a single grub buff on him. ….pretty sad.
