Hello all, new ranger here, im trying to find a nice WvW build to act as an outliner for my organized guild.

First, try to maintain the trolling at Zero on replays, this is an attempt to find a nice spot for rangers on the zerg.

so the point i consider need to be covered:

-survivability
-support
-damage
-mobility
-bags

-survivability – this is important, we can go full glass but one barrage and the retaliation can get us in trouble and if we are low heat a sneak thief can one shoot you, so i have fun that 2700 thongs is need it, pleas feed back on this number.

-support – for me there are 2 types, the ones via buffs and stuff or the once via helping the group, been an outliner i can support by covering the Eles and necros and mesmers that are with me on the outline, that alone give time for them to do their thing and allow me to be part of the synergy.

-damage – in order for me to be a source of protection i need to be quick on kills that way that thief that is trying to kill my ele will go down or at least i will force him to retreat because of the pressure i put on him, for this a minimum of 2000 power and 35% crit has been the spot im looking for

-mobility – this one it might be just personal, but i hate being slow so i look for either a GS so i can keep up with my guild or a WH or +25% movement via runes.

-bags – simple, i want to kill bad guys and be rewarded for it

so i came up with 2 builds so far, some of the choices i made for the accessories and stuff i took them because i already own them

The Power one – Focusing on LB, sw/d is my defensive set via evades and some time i can also put pressure on my opponent with them, most of the damage here come via signets and LB short CD.

The Condition one – Just and idea im testing, massive traps, conditions hit hard but you need to be a 600 range so you need to be more bunker, still working on fine tuning this one. The lack of stability bothers me so i man change the elite, also no direct damage but if i overlap the trap the damage is massive.

Again im in the look of the build and roll and i want some feedback form the other rangers out there

Okay there are really 2 types of ranger builds you can go for in a zerg.
Back line Single target and frontline / midline for more AOE

That said what do you want to do.

If you go backline your going to need RTW. since you will be shooting LB from the back to try to snipe down targets. You won’t take spotter because you wont really be to close to your allies. Thus the 2nd trait will be not support but LB orientated, EE or Pierce ( i prefer pierce so I can always hit the target I want. )

If you go glass your 2nd set is a GTFO set and LB is your main. So your build might look like this. A standard 6/0/2/6/0 Backline LB ranger with GS or sword/wh/dag for GTFO moments.

You will use pets like Moa/spider that stand in the back out of harms way / buff you so you can hit protect me when you need and your pet not insta dead. If it does die you’ll have gotten fury and might. (i didn’t change your gear)

OPTION 2

You can also go midline supportish Use the Axe for AOE cleave and either sword or greatsword for mobility.

You can use traps for AOE utility but if you do go traps you won’t be able to use EB cause pet insta dead and you arn’t using WS skills so no condi removal there. Thus the weakness will be condi removal. (again no gear change but it would be pvt)

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBHhFakRlWWLXxeFuWDoHULDgBmdBnCrgrEukVEF-TlxCwAQUCC4ABIc/hmK/8p+jbzfkCYSpRA-w

Here is a build of midline option 2 that still has some support (spotter) but drops the aoe traps in favor of WS to get more direct damage and condi removal

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBHhFakRlCWbZxjFuWDoHULDgBmZBfBuT4k4tLZFRB-TlxCwAQUCC4ABIc/hmK/8p+jbzfkCYSpRA-w
(This is something i have played around with recently and like)

Option 3 is a full front line with signets where you can just be a beast for 6 seconds but unfortunately you will not last long once on cool down, I wouldn’t recommend that.

Here’s my approach to a zerg ranger. I hate playing tanky, and love ranged, so I tried making the best siege DPS I could.

http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQJATTjMqUyaLLGsQ1ag9gadAUAndrhg9FMChQBrmA-TFCBwAnVCid/R5CO1fAcJByqkKlGi86CY8kACAgAczbmNvZA38m38m38mFCY0CA-w

I run this build as a dedicated back-line ranged DPS character. It’s risky due to shared cooldowns running LB/LB, however the on-swap fury allows for very solid QZ comboing. I’ve found this a very effective zerg siege and tower defense build, and overall even its solo camp-capturing potential is pretty solid. Running camp-taking havoc I would run a greatsword in the alternate weaponset.

My rotation for camps I know I can win is usually:
Send in pet (for aggro, initiatiate with Arctic Wolf for AOE chill on the mobs) → autoattack dolyak/misc mob → Swap weapon (fury) → QZ → RF front mob or scouts to stop the blinds faster → Barrage → run in and drop entangle on balled mobs and swap pet to maintain aggro on summon → gain distance and plink off the rest. Using the GS for its evades and AOE cleave is obviously a good choice to switch to when taking out camps alone when you run in.

You have to play this well, though. If you’re out of place, YOU WILL DIE. Also be sure to be in an organized group which calls water fields to know where to put yours when, and where to align yourself if you need to shoot through them for the finisher or simply heal up yourself.

This is the meta zerg build. It’s slightly out of date, but close enough that can customize it to your own.

I’m not a fan of longbow in a zerg fight i find the safest place to stand and the place the yields the most bags is right on top of the commanders head. I prefer to put survival above all else as the most detrimental thing you can do is rally a heap of down opponents. that being said often use this build

Agree Eggyokeo.

There was a video on reddit a couple days ago of a guy on Blackgate running on the zerg frontlines completely naked, just to prove it’s positioning rather than equipment that keeps you alive. Which any melee ranger could have told you from experience, but that really hammers home the point.

this is the build that I use when I want to fight along with the people at the frontline. the purpose of the build is to buff my allies and provide them with healing and regen. this build is also strong in 1v1 and perfect in small scale roaming but can hold it’s own in zerg fights.

i would appreciate your comments about my build.

I use many different builds in zerg fight. These are two examples.

Frontline build with high survivability and acceptable damage. Support by spotter, horn and waterfield. 25 might stacks with RaO and murrelow. Lots of stability.

Support frontline build with permanent regeneration and swiftness for the group. Lots of healing by attacking, weapon switching and waterfield. Firefield for might stacking and tagging enemies.

one of the build i ask about is a condition oriented, only problem i have had with it is the cast time and reaction time with it, yours is spirits, not sure spirits will survive the aoe of the zerg, again we al talking been in the blob or close to it that is why i prefer traps since they are unblockable.

If you lack some sustained damage within your trap/condition build you could improve your bleeding rate. For example by piercing arrows, sigills, buffood, etc. With a crit-rate of about 50% and fury (extra 20%) sharpened edges triggers at almost 50% of your shots.
Also use RaO for the might stacks (eg. with the poison fiel of carrion devourer). 25 might stacks are a whole lot of extra condition damage.
With this build I could make bleed stacks of 10 and more at different players within the enemy zerg:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNBlODbkRlyVbXxlFuWDEIELHCaPP+ycZLlXkBmUB-TlSAwAaUCKU9HKPgAIHJAHm/mp7ZwFAAwBV4qyPm7PQKAmEGB-w

For mobility rather use your vigor (by dodging) than greatsword (wich shouldn’t be used for condition damage build) or at least use the sword for mobility and evades. You will need the horn for blasting water fields and getting fury.

If you have problems with conditions on you, get a good guard for your group. Then you might also think about using bark skin or offensvie buffood as well.
