Shortbow vs Longbow for a noob
Longbow= power, range
Shortbow= condi, mid range
Both can be hybrids
I’d guess, in an appropriate build, shortbow will have better dps in a pve setting compared to longbow burst dmg. That’s probably more to do with axe/torch on swap and traps though.
Actually…
… Longbow has the potential to be the power weapon of choice. The problem is the Range “limitation”. In order to maximize it’s benefits you have to be 1200 range away from your target. Which is frankly a lot and usually means you are away from your pals and buffs they provide.
If you are a lone wolf going Berserker sniper in WvW – Longbow would beat Shortbow in everything it does. Utility and damage.
If you are more of a party roamer or you don’t like being 1-shot – Shortbow is your best friend since you are not experienced yet. There is a bleeding build that will keep the DPS going.
Important note: 75% of your enemy’s surrounding is flank. Don’t backpeddal. Strafe at all times.
You word it like someone said longbow wasn’t a power weapon. Get some sleep/coffee or whatever your excuse is this time.

I think they meant to say “shortbow.”

If you read it again and get some sleep/coffee yourself – you’ll see I stressed and highlighted THE in that sentence.
Longbow is able to beat sword in DPS by itself. So it is THE Power weapon you should choose since it is THE best power weapon we have if you get the combat conditions to your advantage.
Don’t jump to conclusions if you can’t afford it.

Oh sword! Yes I see where that was brought up by myself, op and you. Now it is so much more obvious.

The only skill on the longbow that has that range requirement is the auto attack. Unless you plan to camp the longbow, it works perfectly fine as a burst weapon in a dps rotation. Rangers are meant to swap weapons a lot.

That’s the point.
Longbow not only has the best burst, it can also have the best DPS from rotation without swapping if you are not limited by range (you don’t really need to swap weapons in WvW that often if you are kiting, I think).
So while Longbow is as good of a weapon it is – the only question is the OPs playstyle. In terms of efficiency, Longbow wins against most weapons unless in an organized group content.

Hi. can someone give me a rundown on the pros and cons for each?
Does shortbow win out if i continuously land crossfires on the side and back?
for rangers the question isn’t about raw dps most of the time but about how and where you’ll be using it. as has been said shortbow is a midrange hybrid weapon, it works well with high crit chance and condition damage.
I havent done the math but without building around a bleed build you wouldn’t be able to maintain enough bleeding stacks to completely out dps the lb.
In a situation like WvW it will depend on your playstyle, LB is for sniping and shortbow is for skirmishing and condi pressure. the same goes for PvP. in PvE neither weapon is optimal, sword would be #1 in dps, #2 would be LB and 3 would most likely be either main hand axe or shortbow. i think axe may edge out shortbow depending on the build.
LB has a low cooldown stealth and knockback, SB has a daze and evade.
choose a weapon based on the utility you want and then build for it.
It really depends on who and what your fighting… In WvW 1v1 shortbow is a beast… Its extremely easy to maintain 2~3k dps from bleeds alone with flanking aa, earth sigil, and sharpened edges… Even if it gets cleansed your still applying 1~3 bleeds per aa…
Basically roll out as a condition survival ranger and you’ll kick butt roaming in wvw… Just be weary of transfer necros as anet thinks they need to be gods of condi control with almost no susceptibility to them… I’d personally mix toughness, healing power, precision, and condi dmg stats… Maybe a mix of apothecary with rabid…
If your going PvE just roll zerker longbow and spam your buttons until you actually do raids or fractals where skill rotations actually mean something…
If your going PvP shortbow is blah due to bad trait design and it is just easier and better roll longbow…
