I was wondering because i’m farming the pets now to have the perfect build for dps.

Are there any vanilla pets i should get? will hot pets be worthless?

My opinion, yes. You should grab a few vanilla pets. Partly for the DPS but mostly for the utility.
If you are going strictly for PvE DPS, look for a Lynx (core)and a Bristleback(HoT). PvP/WvW will be different; generally wanting more control.

Other pets worth looking into:
-Jungle Stalker (might support)
-Tiger (Fury support, 2nd or 3rd highest dps, HoT)
-Lightning Wyvern (CC on big targets, HoT)
-Pink Moa (CC on small targets without pushing them around)
-Wolf (Fear, Knockdown)
-Krytan Drakehound (Immob, Knockdown)
-Jungle Spider (Ranged Immob)
-Smokescale (mostly PvP)

If you plan on getting PoF tho, you might consider just collecting them all. Some pets that are kinda eh for core look like they’ll be amazing for Soulbeast. Black Bear and the Pigs in particular.

I’d also recommend Hyena (Knockdown, summons another Hyena for 40 seconds with knockdown too). 2 knockdowns actually are pretty good for Coretyria champs to solo.

If you going to play PoF id say blackbear would be very useful because of double immunity and spiders for poisonfields for condi heavy builds.
The new expansion also provides 5 new pets to collect.

I would recommend the snow leopard (nice freeze plus high burst of bamage) in addition to any of the trait buffs (except tone one that taunts enemies) you put on it make the cat very powerful. Also the hyena cause it does wonders in terms of dps, knockdowns and in group events makes the other hyena an extra target, making groups of enemies easier to manage.

So for melee build hyena is one of the better ones then?

I am still working on unlocking all my pets.I just got the eagle pet.

Just get them all, it’s a fun couple of play sessions to go into various maps and track them down to tame them. The HoT ones take a bit more time. I found it satisfying.

Well, if you can live with the grayed out portraits in the pet selection screen… Personally, I hated that so much I went back to GW1 to finish the HoM and unlock the last few pets.

That said, pet collecting is one of the fun perks of playing a ranger imho. No other class gets this little joy you get when you find a den and scan around to find a Juvenile at the back.

I was messing around with the alpine wolf and saw that the bleeds even though pretty weak for a 30 sec cd.It was adding a few chills and bleed effect.I guess alpine wolf is a good condi dps pet.

Also:I think i need to start using my cc pets more cause those mushroom enemies in tangled depths mess me up.
