So, i’ve been using this build for a while: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vNEQNAR8YnUqAtsg1sCGsAEtiFGBD2Vtr+oE0yYc0CAFsZC-e I know its not the best out there but i like melee and i like my ranger. i was wondering though if going with condi gear would actually be better with it. Looked through my combat log and i stack kittentons of bleeding, so maybe if id change the traits a small bit id get really good dps with it.. not sure. Any thoughts?

The few bleeds from dagger and Ancient Seeds are not worth running condi gear. Definitely stick to power on a GS +Sword/x build.
There are still ways to improve your build without giving up the melee playstyle, but if you want some advice, more information would be beneficial – what do you want to do with this build (PvE, PvP, WvW, solo or group, open-world or instanced content) and what gear are you currently using?

i run my melee build in all content, changing up very slightly to suit the content e.g. i use the glyphs in group pve, but in pvp i would go for 1 extra cc break and strength of the pack or entangle. my current gear is is full zerker exotics and ive started getting my marauder ascended trinkets/amulet.. cuz if i kitten up in this build im as good as dead. so squishy. also i run soldier runes again for power-vitality and the faster swap which i learnt to love on my warrior:)) i do have little knowledge of how stats work in game though. some say toughness is bad for ranger, go vitality.. but why would that be? shouldnt it help me be a bit more tanky as well?

That looks like a reasonably good base-build for both WvW and non-super high end PvE. Not the best possible, but pretty good. You definitely want to stick with power.

Berserker or marauder is good for both modes. I think the vit over toughness recommendation comes from the fact that we have a lot of healing, so you can quickly heal up large health pools.

There are a lot of small things you could easily optimize per game mode, if you need advice. For example spotters and offhand axe for PvE. Also SotH and NS are a little redundant. I assume you have SotH for maul bursts in WvW?

yes axe is … pretty tricky to use in pvp, but i would be sweet in pve. Also i have a feeling SotH and NS might be literally redundant, as i dont get the feeling that they stack. tried taking one off and leaving another and with both and.. dont really see a difference, pls do let me know if you have info on that. i find that at least against melee guyz being waaay faster is the best thing ever ( had a norn warrior, even with all the movement abilities it felt like slowmotion walking ). Please throw tips at me as much as youre willing, cuz the gameplay is so rewarding i really wanna see if i can make it work well. its just so fun and it improved my dodging by miles:))

The speed boost does not stack. You’re capped at 33% with a few exceptions like superspeed. I would take celestial shadow for sure in WvW, and obviously the glyph one for PvE.

For WvW, you are severely lacking in condi removal, especially as a melee ranger. You have to have something other than druidic clarity, even 3 ways to clear condis. Look at the 2 WS line grandmasters, SoR, and/or trooper runes. Sigils like generosity can also help.

Your pets for WvW are slightly subpar as well. I’d look at smokescale for stealth (via leaps and offhand warhorn), electric wyvern for dazing strike and AI CC, bristleback for damage, tiger for burst damage (works well with remorseless and/or GS as well), wolf for harder CC.

For PvE you’ll want spotter, GoE, GotL, frost spirit, and possibly sun spirit for better group buffing. Pets for PvE are either DPS like tiger, or heavy CC ones for breakbars.

That’s the gist of how to play ranger in both modes. It may sound like a lot but since the two modes save your traits and utilities, it’s really just swapping pets.

Your pets are good for core CC pets, but wolf is better (harder F2 CC than the other canines), and all of the expac pets are excellent at what they do.

Also solo PvE, disregard the utility advice I gave you and take selfish stuff like quickening zephyr or something.
