What would you recommend for PVE as Beastmaster? Currently I am running 6/6/2/0/0 in Rampager’s (using traps). I don’t have the money to change gear. I am at a base 71% crit chance.

I have a Longbow with Air and Torment, a Greatsword with Air/Fire.

I’d like to try 30 in Beastmastery just to see what its like, but I’m really going to miss the loss of some other things.

Because I need the crit chance for the weapons I was thinking 2/6/0/0/6? But then I would miss out on Spotter and Eagle Eye and Read the Wind, 200 power, 20% condition duration, Attacks of Opportunity, etc.

Would the benefits from having a “superbuff” pet outweigh these losses, in your opinion? If I do try it out, which pets would you recommend? Again, this would be for PVE. Thanks.

I’m using something like this at the moment. You can kill things extremely fast with this and yes pets hit like truck with 25 might stack.

You just have to manage your pet health. For perma fury just switch weapon as often as you can.

In number :
Your drake F2 can do almost 20k damage on a single foe in 2 second. You will easily see him doing some 5-6k aoe damage on “tail swip”
Your cat will be your most efficient single target damager.

You can swap trait on nature magic to benefit spirit if you really want frost spirit (this work just fine).

I’m using this setup since 1 and 1/2 years (I changed some stuff over these time but I’ve alway sticked to the beastmaster way) and your only real task will be to support your pet and manage him (which mean that it’s up to you if he survive or die on you) but in proper hands this build allow you to melt mobs easily.

EDIT : I think you can try it with your current stuff. You will lose a bit of damage with your weapon setup but your crit chance should be far enough to make it work.

No core profession should be balanced around an optional elite specialization.

Kind of the caveat in building for PvE in GW2 is the sense that they just sort of added options without making sure there was ever a reason to take them.

Pets are just sort of sitting on that big list of tragically irrelevant mechanics sandwiched somewhere between conditions and healing power. So it never feels too worthwhile to invest in them as a baseline function. Most of the things you’ll find valuable in Beastmastery is accessing abilities by swapping your pet or using F2, and in that respect the pet is mostly just ornament you try not to let die before the timer’s up.

There’s some saving graces in a few traits with interesting timing gameplay here and there and some that successfully fill an odd niche or two, but it can also be pretty disappointing.

Open world PvE is about the only place you can get away with using Master’s Bond to megabuff pets. Slap 6 in BM for funzies, slot Master’s Bond, slot Pet’s Prowess and Companion’s Might, whip out your Birthday Blaster and shoot cake all over your River Drake (it actually works.)

Boom-bam. Activate Rampage as One, stack might on him, activate Signet of the Wild and press F2. Watch carnage.

It’s not super practical, but it is fun.

I think even in pve the are different parts to game, open world, personal/living story, zerging around and dungeons. and you can use slightly different builds for all of them.

I think that full BM builds are only relevant in open world and personal story. in zerg content and trains pets die a little easy and dungeons our meta build has a lot of pet traits in it.

for open world farming while i watch tv i use 4/5/0/3/2 and grab Masters bond it works until i swap pets by accident. but there is no reason you couldn’t go say 4/4/0/0/6 or 4/4/0/3/3 if you want to go all out pet spec.

Seems like I remember running something like this at one time:

It’s a heavy pet DPS build that’s based on heavily might stacking your pet. You can swap in a drake for cleave or if you just want to see a huge crit, use a raven and F2 once it has 25 might stacks. =P

Just bear in mind that you probably won’t out-DPS the meta build in dungeons and you also won’t have spotter.

Last night I tried 4/4/0/0/6 with good success. Regular enemies (Risen in Orr and Karkas, Riders and Drakes in Southsun) went down really fast using only a Greatsword.

4/4 gives me the versatility I want, being able to pull out the longbow on the fly for “big” PVE battles where I’m best staying back.

With Spotter on I can keep my crit percentage at 71%, and with Might stacks I actually have MORE power than I did with my previous setup. Greatsword has Sigil of Air and Sigil of Strength.

I have the Lynx in the Pet # 1 spot, and River Drake in the # 2. I put away the Pet, and charge in with GS 3. At this point my Lynx appears right next to me with 3 seconds of Quickness AND Opening Strike, and I get 3-4 stacks of Might right away along with 3 seconds of quickness. I can fire off a couple traps at my feet really fast if I want to (though not really needed). As I’m getting more stacks of might, myself and my pet are adding stacks of bleeding. If I switch in the Drake now, he gives me 3 more stacks of might, AND we both get another 3 seconds of quickness, AND he usually cleaves immediately. By the end of the brief fight I’m usually already at 10 stacks of might, and the pet has acquired some as well.

I’m also enjoying Greatsword a lot as a defensive weapon, and it’s about to get even better with this next update. Thanks very much for your help.

(Traits in the above scenario are Steady Focus, Spotter, Sharpened Edges, Companion’s Might, Mighty Swap, Rending Attacks, and Zephyr’s Speed. The key thing to remember is to deactivate your pet before each battle.)

I glad that you found something that you enjoy, don’t forget to keep experimenting.

just some suggestions, i guessing you don’t have a lot of trait investment in condi’s so why not in the skirmishing trait line use “Pets prowess” instead of “Sharpened Edges”. I would not bother with traps to much the utility’s i would take are out of Sic’em, Signet of the wild (particularly after tuesday next week), Quickening zephyr, Signet of the hunt, lightning reflexes and signet of renewal.
