Hello, just started playing ranger a few days ago – never had the desire to play it seriously before but finally enticed by the flashy melee animations!

Coming from playing mesmer (shatter), so it’s a very steep learning curve with ranger – I’ve just been messing around with different builds in hotjoin to get an idea of different ranger builds.

At the moment have settled on this build:
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAR8YjEq0yaBLmsw1aADBpdrQl4FwbxXF8pB-TJhFwAAuIAw2fIxTAYaZAA
But have tried different variations of traits including full beastmastery or marksmanship, signet builds, moment of clarity focused, all with with different pets… I have tried to read as much as I can from the guides on here and through watching videos.

I have not tried trap builds, spirit builds or condition bunkers, because frankly I find that style of play incredibly boring

One thing I know for sure is I love the greatsword, but it seems that is almost purely a power based weapon. I’m not keen on both bows, although the longbow stealth is nice to have (makes me feel at home) – favouring sword+dagger for the mobility and… well… simply because it looks cool – and also if vs a thief I find using either bow to be extremely risky once they close with you into melee range (almost immediately).

What I am finding difficult, especially coming from shatter mesmer, is how to deal significant damage in a short amount of time. I can kite and evade easily survive/escape most encounters with GS + Sw/D, but downing opponents takes more time than I am used to. Often in an outnumbered situation I find it increasingly difficult to burst a single target down.

I suppose in wvw this doesn’t matter so much as there is no time limit on killing an opponent – but sadly in pvp it matters whether you win a fight in 10 seconds or 2 minutes. Granted once I am levelled up to 80 through tomes of knowledge, I will likely make this character solely for wvw roaming anyway.

I have read that ranger damage comes from a bit of everything – power and condition? However I don’t find this making sense in the traits or skills – especially if using the greatsword as a primary weapon. I have tried with signet of the hunt (traited to effect you) and moment of clarity, although find it too awkward to micromanage – especially if fighting a sword/dagger thief.

Then there is boon removal – I can’t find any. I take it this is just how it is?

And condition removal – not sure which is the best way to go here, either survival of the fittest with full survival utilities, empathic bond, evasive purity (nice to get rid of poison with a not too long ICD) or relying on melandru runes/sigils of generosity/bear pet/signet of renewal. Not sure how much is too much or how much is too little. I don’t really like signet of renewal because the active is pretty much “kill my pet”! :p
I figured with melandru runes + empathic bond it softens the blow for conditions transferred to the pet so they don’t take too much damage either. And I can deal with poison through dodging. Besides, if I do make this solely for wvw at the end of the day, I might just go with melandru + poultry soup.

Regarding Opening Strike – personally I find it extremely lackluster, even if it 100% crits, given there is no access to huge upfront burst (maul isn’t impressive damage unless you do the signet/MoC gimmick).

And another question about stomping – hard to get used to no distortion, diversion or stealth stomp, or even blink stomps (:(). Is it best to just kill the opponent the old fashioned way and not bother with stomping as a ranger, unless you have RaO up?

Finally a question on pets – is it a good idea to put them on passive – then press “attack target” to initiate their key skill (ie knockdown) and have some control over it? Or should I just leave them on automatic attack and just use F2 when I need it? On passive it seems you can reliably call them back out of an AoE to avoid damage so they won’t go charging straight back in to attack, although you have to constantly order them to attack your new target. Having played around with a few of them I do like the immobilise and knockdown on the drakehound for one, although not yet sure which ones best support a melee/power build.

tl;dr – struggling with melee power damage burst, choice of condi removal, choice of pet, killing players quickly in outnumbered fights rather than simply kiting and running away with swoop/hornet sting, etc…

Cheers!

check this out tell me what you think, this should solve your problems.

pet tips is to bind the attack key to your mouse or close by.
bind f2 to R on your keyboard . its with in reach there.
and i use C binded for petswap or mouse side button.
you can leave your pet on agressive , if you get someone low and they run away and you don’t need your pet right away let him chase him a little bit, if the pet catches him if his low enough he will go down , the swap your pet to get him to come back recall takes too long to recall after that kind of tactic.

he’ll be downed and out of the game for a few secs and every second counts in pvp.
heck if his down and a friendly player comes by he can spend a few secs to stomp the guy.

the major tip about pets is ot remember where they are, and to remind yourself to keep them close using the attack f1 to make sure they are on the correct target.
if there is a different target next to your target that is low on hp , F1 your pet to attack that target and help down him while you keep pressuring your orginal target.

GS build for you.
It is a middle ground build, you will have some defense, but not be too tanky. You will hit fairly decently, but not over the top. You can apply pressure, and take some pressure too. You will have plenty of cleanses. Some group support through Axe 5 (reflect arrows AOE= 75% of capture point), Healing Spring and Spotter. You will also have very good mobility (sword 2 is clunky, but very nice for moving about once you get the hang of it)

The opinion of the new rangers are very valuable because they aren’t made under some delusion that some gurus here have been indoctrinated into.

I wholeheartedly see your point OP. Going from mesmer to Ranger is like going from assault-rifle to literally throwing pitiful rocks. If the class doesn’t make sense almost right away from a veteran player’s perspective, it is a design issue.

I am a long time Ranger player. I felt that the Ranger has been gradually but surely losing ground in competitive pvp and WvW due to OTHER CLASSES getting buffs. Net-net Ranger got shafted every balance update if you look at the big picture. The two builds posted above are great for a Ranger build, but terrible as a build in general compared to what other classes have.

That was fast, thanks!

Regarding F2 – actually I don’t use that – I have all the keys and mouse in nice comfortable positions anyway.

Hmm so it seems ony way or another I should include some condition damage.

I wasn’t sure of survival of the fittest – although that fury is nice to have.

I found that off-hand axe pull to be very unreliable – is there a certain technique to using it, or is the range for the pull just very small? I can see how #5 works to hold/decap points, but not liking the root. Still, I’ll give it another try and see if I like it over dagger.

Is poison master really work it over either bark skin or oakheart salve? I suppose Sw/D is poisoning a fair bit. Maybe I should take two sigils of doom?

Is it work losing both swiftness and fury on weapon swap? Maybe I’m just valuing these things too highly.

I do feel very comfortable now with swoop/hornet sting/monarch’s leap/lightning reflexes with detargeting for extreme mobility, and as such escaping a difficult situations is not a problem with all those skills and evades.

Rune of Ice is a bit strange – where does all the chill come from?

Sigil of frailty is interesting – I’ll have to play around and see what the max vulnerability I can keep stacked on a target is.

:)

Test out the poison master , i find it very worth while as it puts on so much pressure even regen tank build are forced into a more Agressive tactic, as if they don’t they will slowly die from the poison damage alone. and don;‘t forget your pet will apply poison too even if your attack misses your pet may hit using a f2 Cat leap or a dog knocking him down applying poison.
i see bark skin more focused on a Full bunker build rather than a condi spec but with Survival of the fittest you shouldn’t realy have much of a problem.

though the trade offs are ether more Survival and damage reduction , meaning you can’t pressure people off poin.

but by applying lots of poison it help your team mates kill them faster meaning more uptime on cap points and kills you can’t always rely on a necro or a thief to apply the poison for you as one necro has it on a 20sec cooldown in a limited area , and a thief only has it ona steal build and a venom build..

where as you can apply it anytime anywhere you like.

Haha – I don’t know if you’ve played mass effect 3 multiplayer, but I liken going from zerker shatter mesmer to ranger as going from geth infiltrator + claymore (glassy, shotgun, death machine) to turian saboteur with an eagle (little tankier, pets, mediocre sustained damage)!

Sorry, that’s an exaggeration.

Hmm, regarding poison master – I will try that first then. Is it worth using a pet that poisons on F2 skill as well, such as devourers?

No haven’t played, but you get my point.

Poison master is a bad trait. Idk if you are familiar with the term opportunity cost but it is my opinion that EB is much better than the alternatives in WS line. Wiping poison off yourself is better than doing ~150 dmg more on each of your own poison tick. Also, you have numerous poison up-time already and you don’t need poison on pet swap. Finally, you should use poison tactically not spam it which tends to be the case when you are given incentive to increase it’s damage by a small amount.

if you acount for the gap in poison up time those 3-4secs the poison is down these hp bunkers can heal quite a lot of hp during those 3-4secs of no poison and some times the situation just means you can’t or it misses the target because the dodged omg.

so the poison master makes it possible to keep that poison uptime permement though i see your point but its impossible to be able to hit perfectly in every situation its even harder to land a hit when nearly every warroir in pvp takes ham/bow.

I would recommend a celesial trapper build but since you’re not into that style of play (heart broken) Prysin’s build looks solid.

Keep in mind we don’t do power builds well. A percentage of our damage is taken off the top in order to balance us with our kittenty kittening broken worthless pet. So no matter how glassy you go, you will never be able to play DPS effectively. I don’t think I need to tell a shatter mesmer what a joke LB/GS DPS rangers are >.>

Remember to swap out your pet and use the F2 when it is available. The best thing you can learn on ranger is how to make your broken worthless kittenty kittening pet not be a broken worthless kittenty kittening pet.

Hmm, with sigil of frailty I’m only seeing a consistent 3 stacks of vuln on the test golems.

I was contemplating using battle sigils – together with bountiful hunter.

Regarding pets – the hound knockdowns and drakehound immobilise has enabled me to land some nice mauls. And the quickening zephyr allows for some decent sword auto attack burst to down an opponent where necessary.

it would be a waste on poison pets, i use it to improve the damage a Cat or dog does, the point of poison master is to make sure the healing regen is countered so your pet can do conistant dps or auto attacks/skils , normaly if the targets not poisoned or has some kind of condition on them the pets damage is just obsorbed through regen and Agis/protect boons.

tail wind is useful if you don’t have a swiftness option in your weapon set.
furious grip is pretty point less if you have survival of the fittest now you can get away with just that having both would be near perm Fury.

pretty good trait setup, just changed some small things

not bad for a zerk setup but u could also try Cavalier amulet instead if u feel ur too squishy. if you do, swap the Sigil of Air on Sword-Dagger out for a Sigil of Force, and just remember not to autoattack for ur first 3 attacks while in Greatsword, instead open with Swoop, Hilt Bash, then Maul if you just swapped to Greatsword after getting into combat, then, just keep using those 3 as the come off cooldown right after you swap to it again.

u can also swap the Offhand Dagger out for an Offhand Axe, if u do that, use Battle and Intelligence sigils on both weaponsets and remember to open with Axe4 when you swap to that set

I am starting to love the Jaguar.

At the moment I’m trying this out: http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fNAQNAR8YjEq0yaBLmsw1aALhodTQxvbvlPXMRJSA-TZBHwAGOIAAuAAq2fYwTAoZZAA

Also adjusting my keybindings – pet controls and shatter buttons do not belong in the same position so I’m moving them around to see what has the best flow to it. Probably have to rebind if changing classes.

Starting to understand how to use high damage pets to supplement personal damage – almost like playing a phantasm build, just with a lot of evades .

Please don’t think I’m ignoring any advice in this thread – I take every post on board, but it takes time to test and work through one thing at a time. Build will definitely be undergoing more drastic changes as I understand how to play the ranger better.

Hmm that does look good, thank you.

I really need to let go of energy sigils – kind of become a crutch but I’ll give it a go!

Just a couple of questions about the pets – what makes the lynx and snow leopard better than jaguar or a bird?

Those 5 stacks of might look great so I really should take the lynx (EDIT: Oops, got confused between that and the jungle stalker!) , but I’m not sure of the snow leopard’s 2s chill on pounce.

I was thinking the raven’s blind might be useful (swapping to it and activating during a stomp for instance), but is it not great in practice? I haven’t had much chance to extensively test apart from the mist npcs.

Edit2: Wow that might is nice! :o

birds are bursty but the cats are better overall

also, snow leopard does some pretty nice dmg once that chill gets off, and I think the f2 does significantly more damage than the lynx’s

Just posting this to cover my back – some thief accused me of hacking in hotjoin using the above build… :/

Too much evade spam I guess?

Oh regarding strength runes – I tried them out for a while but found necro fear spam and short stuns to be pretty annoying so switched back to melandru for the time being. Perhaps a little redundant with empathic bond but I’ll change them back and forth to see how to work around each one’s shortcomings. And I decided to keep energy sigils on both weapon for the time being – helps when fighting something like a thief.

I think what I find most challenging is the lack of decent stun breaks.
Protect me ~ kill my pet
Signet of renewal ~ kill my pet (60s cooldown? Seriously?)
Quickening zephyr ~ kill myself (worse healing)

Lightning reflexes is the only one I find to be reliable as a stun break. I mainly find myself using QZ to burst down something using sword auto attacks.

But if there’s something like a hammer warrior and interrupt mesmer hovering around, things can be painful if you get caught.

All i can say is Rangers Roll out. these Decepticons don’t know who they are messing with.
lots of people use all there big attacks vs a serpent sting roll and waste it all instead of waiting till the evasion time/animation of the sting is over.

Heh, strangely enough I find it easier 1v1ing a thief compared to any other class, providing I use both swords and offhand dagger. Easier than on mesmer tbh – can out evade them, bit of poison here and there, counterattack and hilt bash/maul timed right are wonderful. Only trouble is no way to kick them out of shadow refuge (I do miss illusionary wave).

Difficulty arises when outnumbered (ie 1v3) – can easily disengage, but most likely have permanent target overhead so no way to reset a fight other than run away and run back in again.

A bit worried how this will carry across into wvw – assuming either SB, LB or mainhand axe is mandatory for chasing – all of which I don’t like at all.

In an ideal world I’d love greatsword only, and weapon swap between mesmer greatsword and ranger greatsword!

Ha, ha. Best part of WvW is pounding the snot out of over confident thieves. I love watching them make a misguided b-line to their death!

kitten – now I try to play mesmer again and it feels so sluggish without swoop, sword leaps, LR and a million evades…

As far as basic gameplay and securing stomps go, I’d highly recommend checking out my channel.

Nice use of pet swap quickness, birds and sic em! :o

Might try that instead of the quickening zephyr.
