State of the Game - suggestions/questions
On the bright side they really can’t butcher the class anymore than they have.
lets look at the ranger class as it stands, It’s unwanted by anyone in Pve for anything, only one build was viable in PvP, and the class is pretty useless in WvW, I know of guilds that won’t allow Members to join with a ranger because they bring absolutely nothing to the guild.
My question to the Dev’s : "When you were children were you touched in bad places by men in the woods or were they carrying bows? is that where the hate is coming from ?

Do you even PvP? Trapper, BM bunker, condi ranger, all viable, we now have a few more builds added, and keep in mind this is for the “meta” which isn’t changing atm because people are too lazy or stupid to change it up atm.

No i stopped PvP and Pve also, too many whiny Kittens involved in both. I’ve tried every build you are speaking of and the only build i saw any success with was the BM, in PvP, but is completely useless in WvW. The pet stays dead most of the time. I’m happy you like the direction the ranger is heading, good for you bad for rangers as a whole
trapper: engin and necro can do much more better condi and dont die vs an ele…
condi shortbow ranger: necro and engi can do much more better and its aoe!
also you stop doing dmg when you get target and have to kite dodge and survive…
bm bunker: yes its best one, but still not rly useful for teamfights. only nice to win each 1vs1 vs most builds. but its not most important to win 1vs1 on a tpvp
no we rly have not any one build make as important for a team

Battosai – If you could ask them to consider letting us have access to some (reliable) blast finisher(s), I would be so pleased. I, as a ranger, want to be more of a team player, and have less of the “lone ranger” blues.
So this low in the ammount of pages for suggestions and thoughts you might never see these. I was thinking of ways to make spirits viable/fun.
First my experiences with spirits has been so-so. If you do not wish to read these please skip down to suggestions. Admittedly I do not spvp as much as during beta when I like most rangers ran spirits and greatsword. So the spvp aspect I will leave for someone to touch on(however I think my experiences for wvw closely correlate)
1. my experiences in dungeons with spirits has been poor. At best they get off one special as they die. Put them in the corner I hear people say. How many boss fights do you not move in? how many corners are good enough to affect all allies? Also taking 2 secs(I know its less but feels longer when in combat) out to place it while standing in one place could mean death for me the ranger. Also tried follow trait. Hmmm so i get more pets that can die?The only one i run in dungeon is elite for when my teammate dies. So its a insta rez.
2.in wvw some similar experiences except have you tried casting spirits mid combat. I can usually only get them up while stability and SoS are up when travelling with the zerg because unlike every other ranged caster I do not have a instacast area ranged ability(I do not consider piercing arrows area) so I have to be in the horde to stay safe from enemy area attacks. Which means safe from those areas ,but highly susceptible to control affects. In a havoc group get more use when have the following trait ,but what is often the case is in a havoc group is the spirit will go down naturally and in mid combat do not really ahve the time to try and get off a spirit pet cause they have a long casting time.
SUGGESTIONS
Suggestion 1-Cut the cast time to half second or less. This will allow us to have the spirit when we want it where we want it.
Suggestion 2-We have a pet who wants more?Have the spirit enter the pet and give our pets those powers the spirits had. “Storm Spirit would give the pet the storm glow…etc”
Would I play spirits if it were like this? Of course, but I am sure you all have your own ideas and suggestions. so lets give lots of good ideas!
The game is currently all about conditions. So with that in mind…
Q1) Any plans for ranger to have better condition cleansing and adding condition cleansing for the pet (outside of Signet of Renewal for pets)?
Quick recap: Ranger has 7 ways to remove conditions. 1. Healing Spring 2. Signet of Renewal 3. Spirit of Nature 4. Evasive Purity (Trait 20 into NM) 5. Empathetic Bond (Trait 30 into WS) 6. Brown Bear F2 7. Pig F2 -> Healing Seed
Two of those are tied to pets, one tied to an elite, another tied to a heal, two tied into traits, leaving just one for utility skills.
Q2) Plans to modify ranger’s ranged weapon skills for more mobility?
This is why you don’t see many (good) rangers using bows or main hand axe, no mobility tied to them which means poor engage and disengage.
I honestly think these two issues are our biggest concerns. If we can get some mobility and condition cleansing we will be much better off.
The Idea of a controllable blast finisher for rangers would be great, and after searching on guildwiki, i found out, that every class except ranger has at least 1 combofield (warriors just got fire from longbow, but a mass of finishers) AND at least 1 kind of every combofinisher!
And when i’m talking about combofinisher, i mean controllable abilitys like “i will now jump through this waterfield so it heals me” and not “wait for my drake to use his explosion maybe in the waterfield”.
Same problem goes for the poisonfield of spiders, that we can’t controll.
At least make the only usable explosionfinisher of rangers (of the drake) to an ability we can use with F2, although i would prefer a weaponskill.
If you set down our damage because we have a pet, please give us at least the possibility to controll the most important skill of our pets directly!
Every other class can controll when and how it uses combo-abilitys.
This would be a good step in the right direction to keep the ranger-balance close to the other classes.
Would be nice, if you guys can at least mention this
looking forward to see them reduce the cooldown of warhorn, hunter call should be more spamable as it does less damage then longbow rapid shot i don’t see the reason why it’s 25 sec CD even with trait it’s still too long for the damage output
call of the hunt, enough saying with trait is 28 sec ….. seriously just lower it somemore
rangers are seriously outclass in term of weapon cooldowns !
I’d ask them why they made a new grand master trait that isn’t worth the investment (Nature’s Voice.)
Thirteen seconds regen / swiftness that can only be maintained with a Shout Mastery traited “Guard” and 40 point investment vs. Healing Spring and Nature’s Bounty (33% increased regeneration duration) for only 10 points that allows a combo field for 15 seconds that pulses to remove conditions, adds regeneration, and direct healing through blast or leap finishers.
The only thing lost is swiftness, and if that’s such an important boon to your build Birds / Warhorn can keep it up quite well while alone, and in groups there are many, many ways to keep it going.

Ya, I was high on Nature’s Voice for a minute until I realized the only thing I could come up with was Magi’s gear and companion’s might. It just seems like a token zerging trait because the swiftness and regeneration won’t really be useful for the ranger unless you want to go full bunker and hit like a wet tissue. Might as well go full healing and focus on reviving and stuff using this trait…I’m not sure. It’s pretty decent for a 5 man havoc squad in a healer/tank role I suppose, but if regeneration doesn’t scale off the caster’s HP I guess there really is no point to it.
Also, Lunchbox, I was wondering if you thought “Guard”, Entangle, Muddy Terrain, and traps should be instant cast. Right now I feel like they’re all quite a bit too easy to interrupt.
When will the SOTG be up? Im just biting my nails in anticipation, waiting for an answer from the devs regarding the ugly state of the rangers.
I wrote a long and detailed post about it, which someone incompetently merged with a completely different and irrelevant thread, but the short version of it is:
Why are rangers punished for having a class mechanic?
No other class is inherently crippled for HAVING a class mechanic, except the rangers. The result? Only builds that don’t scale with the crippled stat (power ratios) are viable: conditions and bunkering.
Will we ever stop being chained to stupid, incompetent, AI just to be a semi-full character with nothing special?
Will F2 skills ever actually come out on command, instead of having this arbitrary, and usually extremely long and unreliable, delay between pressing the key and actually coming out? Previously the cheap access to quickness somewhat mitigated this clunkyness (it was just a bit worst than normal skills), like it mitigated our lack of damage (…very, very small aid…). Without it, the horrid delay has become far more evident.
There’s a lot more, but that’s the short of it.

during the beta, rangers pet was doing so much damage but now ………. im lost
till they decided to reduce the cooldown for warhorn, buff trait, buff signet, buff long bow, buff overall damage of ranger and improve AI for pet then i will play GW2 again im taking a long long break
DEV if you reading this, stop coming out with new contents when the basic needs is not there
i have been rolling here and there, played all classes the easiest class to play is either warrior or thief, for PvE thief might have a little struggle but when WvW thief is a no brainer….. for warrior it’s just a steamroller for everything
I would rather be defensive and hit like a wet tissue , then die in 2 hits and hit like a peace of toilet paper .
Can’t wait till 4:30.

Well…I can’t disagree with that. I might add that precision/conditions still scale well with ranger (bleed or traps builds) and we were able to defeat the warriors handily in the SOAC game using five power rangers although we were A) glass cannon and B) expecting them to go condition removal thus taking our opponents off guard with power focused builds (which was my idea—let me boast here—I’m pretty crafty in competition…heh heh)

Lol!
Best statement of the month – you have earned a +1 for this one!
We’re counting on you, Battosai!
I think it’s kind of pointless to get into the specifics while discussing the SOTG (i.e. like individual trait mechanics) because they’ll have a LOT to discuss as it is.
Therefore i guess you should focus on the main issues like:
- Underpowered, unappealing Longbow
- Huge pet damage nerf while no decent buff to the damage of the Ranger itself
- Pet AI is still bad (i.e. no hits on moving targets which is a big issue in WvW)
- Shortbow screw-over
I’m of the opinion that arrows should pierce by default and longbow should be default 1500 range. Because right now you need 3 separate traits to effectively use bows, shutting the player out of traiting for signets or traiting for pets. This is a lot of the reason that Malicious Training—a fantastic adept trait by the way—fits into few builds (why go malicious training when you have to give up steady focus, signet mastery, or keen edge? Can you really justify Expertise training in the already tight Wilderness Survival line? etc). Just a thought…because I find that there’s a lot of neat builds in theory, that would only work if you have 80 points to utilize. Ever get that feeling? That it’s always 10 points away?
(edited by Chopps.5047)
^^^^ 100% agree ^^^^
not much a ranger question but a more general one, when will two handed weapons have slots for to sigils? or if that is even an option?

Yes, yes, yes, and yes.
Arrow piercing should be kitten ed baseline with bows.

10 points and at least 1 utility away. And for a game with such an emphasis on action, there’s far too much waiting for cooldowns, especially for weapon swaps.

Well, Durzlla, basically for every profession Jon gets excited and elaborates more on the actual playstyles (even going over fights and examples on why warrior is where it is or all of the in depth information with necro or mesmer). Sadly, this excitement is lost when Jon spoke on rangers (only for other professions was Jon discussing playstyles, builds, and why those playstyles/builds are interesting). I’m also pretty disappointed in Bat’s questions given all the nice comments in this thread. Sorry, Bat, I still like you!!!
Specifically, for ranger, he “took some notes” and had little to say besides revealing that he felt longbow “doesn’t flow well” and wants to combine two (or three!?!) skills and add new ones that give it more burst potential. They will also be doing more splitting in pvp, wvw, and pve, and pets will get more sustain in pve, according to Jon (spirits and minions in general).
The basic conclusions were….
- the spirits builds are decent in PvP and horrible in wvw and pve. nothing we didn’t know
- They can’t make longbow range longer than 1500 for technical reasons and they felt shortbow overshadowed it at 1200 range
- Pet health and sustainability of minions in general (spirits too) will be going up in wvw and pve
- Rangers are currently, basically, forced into a precision/condi spec (usually traps/bleeds) and devs consider that a problem
- Longbow is going to get a make over at some (unknown) point in the future; considered to “not flow well” and will get a redesign
- Player will not be able to use pet skills individually because that’s considered too much micro
- Empathic bond might get a redesign since passive condition removal is considered unfun. Jon likes fights where you try to save your condi removal as long as possible whereas your opponent is trying to make you waste it. They like that kind of tension in fights and will be adding more of it.
I hope that helps for anyone that can’t catch it.

They talked about restructuring LB skills to combine skills and place a more power integrated skill on the bar. Power ranger love (perhaps). Active condition removal focus. Making pets and spirits more survivable in PvE.
They are firm on keeping the SB and LB range. Not too much talk on splitting leash range in PvE/PvP.
Also disappointed with the questions asked. Most especially the most asked for question, ‘what direction is this class going in’, was not asked. Covered some points, but avoided many important ones, especially points that are very important for PvE players.

Totally agree.
Good that Battosai mentioned the crap state of power weapons for rangers.
Too bad that Sharp did not seem to realize that also part of what’s holding LB back is the lack of defense.
I’m still shocked he actually dared compare Ranger shortbow to thief shortbow.
At least longbow will get some love, lets see how this plays out shall we?

I look forward to when our longbow becomes a weapon to use because it is a good weapon, not because if I want to attack over 900 range I must use it.

The outcome is that they really don;t give a kitten about us. More warrior love coming, burn your shortbow, vague promise of longbow something sometime probably a year (or two, or never) and er, what are pets? I think he thought we meant minis, couldn;t really see the problem with minis.
Jon has talked about buffing the spirits in almost every SOTG sighs
One thing I don’t get about spirits. Warriors are perfectly fine with banners which are invincible, effect all in range. and are always active. But ranger spirits are weak, only effect one chara at a time, and have a 10 second cooldown before it can again. And people are worried of spirits being overpowered?

Well, I can’t disagree with you there. I hardly see any rangers in wvw anymore. It’s not a bad thing to expand your horizons to new professions—if you have time. I think Durz is becoming one heck of an all around player but he must not be that good because I still beat his ele 1v1 (ahaha durz better practice with that staff!!!!). Granted, I have 2000 hours on ranger, I better be able to beat someone with a couple hundred or less on ele. :P
Just like him, you all should play multiple professions to expand your horizons. Me, I’m moving on from the game too but not because of nerfs. I got a life to lead. I’ll still be rocking ranger in the Mists, though.
I will still remain a diehard ranger player in PvE until the remove the class from the game. I already have geared 80s of every class but engy (but I’m getting there). I still prefer playing my ranger over them.

But does your team prefer you take ranger? Or will they grumble? Because I hear a lot of grumbling even though I’m very accomplished.

My guild usually prefers me on my ranger, and I’ve had many PUGs surprised by how effective I am with it at well. Especially when I soloed about a quarter of the first stage of the Molten Facility boss.

I don’t play my ranger often so i don’t really have room to talk, but why don’t they just add an avoidance feature similar to that of WoW? Make pets immune to x% of aoe damage, it seems to me this would balance pve and wvw because of the frequency of aoes there while not being nearly as big of a buff in pvp where it would be easier to just focus the pet for all of 10 seconds or less to burst it down.
Sniper shot would be fantastic… Shut your mouth and do not tease me with such things, Durz. :P
