Mortis Umbra (MU)
charr necros ftw
So I made this topic just to see how many people actually have a high level ranger and won’t bother to roll a better profession like me. With all of these promises of ranger buffs going down the drain, I think a lot of people have given up on it. I choose not to roll a second character because I am only a casual player and can’t really find time to play often. Maybe if we prove to Jon peters and the others that there are still enough people that are still playing the ranger we could turn some heads and get these buffs soon.
I’m kind of in the same boat and so I will be shelving the game until I can have fun playing rangers competitively in all forms of pvp.
Also I see your server’s the Tarnished Coast.
Me too – “For the Coast!!!!”
500+ hrs invested and too many unique soulbound items. I know I’m succumbing to the sunk cost fallacy, but dyamn I don’t want to let that all go.
Ill keep playing ranger because its all I enjoy. But I might shelve the game for a bit and play swtor again.
Going to endure with my ranger… just don’t have the strenght, time or will to pick another class.
The ball is now in Anet’s court…

Court* right gotcha, yea well problem for them is the hype and hope they gave us rangers for this patch. I feel silly for defending anet now. I trusted the promise of more buffs this patch, joke was on me.
Rangers own in PvP guys, don’t listen to everyone saying they under powered cause I can’t be only person facerolling every single class I come up against.

Ranger is ranked as the worst or equal worst profession for spvp in any “rank the profession” type threads on the spvp forums.

But, since we’d like to improve, could you make us a little demonstration with a video Sol?
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fMEQNBlODbEoKzOyyyi1OQsUIoA1ekJOdemC+zoSmSUA is the build I use for both WvW and SPvP, My WvW gear is allot different to my SPvP gear. SPvP gear limits my options which I hate.

I can do that.
Hope you enjoy watching.
I can pawn people in spvp on Ranger and on other classes, but it doesn’t mean Rangers are good in pvp. Other classes to the job better, that’s why the general consensus on the spvp forum is that Ranger sucks. That is also a reason why people complain on the ranger forums, although the recent crying storm was triggered by the shortbow nerf.
I’ve actually been having the same war with myself as the OP. My Ranger was my main, but I’ve felt bored with lackluster & unimaginative playstyle/skills and the constant lack of attention to our known issues. I rolled a Necro. That was good for a bit. But, eh…got bored cuz i wanted to go back to my Ranger. Then I rolled a Guardian. it’s cool, but has no effective ranged options, but the group-play is really fun so I’m making him my new main. For now…if they fix Ranger I’ll go back but until then I think I’m sticking with my Guard. My 3rd main lol. I don’t have a main…I have a profession I focus on until they fix the others.
I’m with the OP on this. I don’t have the time nor the desire to roll a new 80 and I’m heavily committed on my Ranger with rare dyes, exotics, cultural tier 3, etc. I’d really want to see improvements – specifically to our damage and weapon dynamics – and not stupid aquatic buffs!
@Sol, oh, look, another axe+warhorn/shortbow ranger. I hope you can admit that the only reason you’re using that combo is not because they’re OP but because they’re the only viable weapon options. (I swear to God, Druzlla’s going to come in here and brag about his great, big, horse-length Greatsword and his two Spirts and how we’re all playing the class wrong.)
I play shortbow / longbow and seem to do fine. I use axe if I feel slow.
I’m continuing with my ranger, because i love the play style, and for me thats the most important thing about it.
I don’t think rangers are weak, but they are very repetitive and lacking in options. This has been said over and over and over, so even a few good builds will not change the problems many people here are faced with :(
I totally understand the sentiment of taking a break from the game until they fix your favorite class, and if I didn’t find something to like about mesmer now, I would have done the same. It’s not a taunt to Anet or anything, it’s basically us saying that we don’t enjoy the lack of options on our favorite characters :)
I’m sure it will be fixed – unfortunately that’ll require some time clearly. While I may never return to ranger, I almost wish they were overpowered for a little while, to sort of make it up to you people xD ..
.. still staying out of the water in wvw now though.
Third month in, first class I played through, never giving it up. Ranger always will be my main, just as it was in GW for years; I’m used to a class that is lowly, nothing to brag about, but that is sort of how I am: I don’t need to be the best at anything, I need to be the best I can be.

This is reminiscent of the way it worked in Guild Wars, with PvP being the benchmark for a profession’s viability. PvE was largely argued as a faceroll and so a ranger update (to the last day I followed the game) never came. The ranger of GW2 is far more viable in PvE than its predecessor but is woefully suffering from similar inadequacies and downright flawed mechanics.
This should come with little surprise if you know the ranger was, at one point, split into an archer and warden in an early game build, and at one point did not even exist. Closer to release, I believe Jon himself called the profession “one of the biggest failures” they had to face. It’s not a fail class, but they must still face the issues it has.
I have no intention of giving my Ranger up.
At the end of the day, the classes are relatively balanced. There are nuances to each class that people have a distaste for. Specifically with the Ranger, people hate dealing with the Pet’s AI and how it takes up 30-40% of their damage, resulting in never being able to land “leet deeps”.
The professions are flavor-based. I like the flavor of the Ranger, and I make it work the way I want it to.
90% of the time I’m the most durable member of my party in explorables. Feels good.
Well, I hate to have to admit it, but I’ve been doing some (kind of goofy stuff)…
My first character to 80 was my Ranger. My second was my Warrior. While leveling my Ranger (which was right when the game released), I was thinking to myself “Man, this is awesome. THIS is what the WoW Hunter always should have been”.
Once I got to 80 I had a terrible time in Orr, and tried several dungeons and felt like I had made a mistake: my pet just kept getting killed no matter what pet I used or how I specced. I switched to my Warrior, and had an easy as pie time no matter what I did: doing map completions in high level zones, soloing champions, running dungeons… so I switched to him for a while.
I went back and forth between the two, making money getting gear, and by the end I had 2 full exotic sets on my Warrior (Rampagers/Rampagers, and Knights/Berserkers) and one on my Ranger (full Zerk everywhere, including jewelry).
Now that I know the ins and outs of the game, how to play it and where everything is, and there isn’t much to do at 80 once you’ve gotten your toons to look exactly the way you like them and completed the zones… and because I really love GW2… I deleted both characters.
Then I made a new Ranger and a new Warrior.
That being said, the more you know about this game, and the better you understand it, the worse the Ranger looks. I really want to like my (currently level 64) Ranger, but at this point I’m just going to finish him out with a buddy I duo with so I can put the gear I have banked for him on him, and never touch him again until there’s some kind of massive overhaul (or enough small fixes over time) that I feel he’s worth playing again.
There isn’t a single solitary thing my Warrior doesn’t do better. It’s a kitten shame.
I want to be a ranger, its the only class that I really see myself playing. That does not mean that my ranger is good at anything, just that I dont want to give up on it. I am a good player, I can hold my own in SPvP, I can do the most damage in my PvE groups, and I can significantly contribute to WvW. However, there is literally, not a single thing that I can do that a warrior cannot do better while still maintaining my contribution or greater in every other area as well.
Rangers definitely need a buff.
Already began leveling a thief. Might also roll a warrior and roam WvW, hunting down suckers with my longbow. Bet I’ll feel much more like a true ranger than when playing the actual ranger class.
Pretty kitten good ranger here. I can hold my own in today’s metagame, but Why cant Ranger be a good class? Whats holding us back?
The Pet AI. That is it. If they could just move and attack at the same time everything would be hunky dory… We’d be monsters in PvP like Mesmers and Thieves. Sadly pet AI isnt the only Issue. Our Weapon skills and broken traits are holding us back too.
I picked Ranger for a Pet. Pets are awesome. Who doesn’t want kitten Shark by their side underwater? Who could possibly say no to a big kitten Drake the belches fire/ice/lightning/bugs/sonic waves/gorrilas/whatever. I still play my Ranger to name my pets funny names. But we wanna be viable too!
I’ve never cared about playing the strongest/weakest profession in a game. For me, it’s all about play-style. And I love the Ranger play-style…to a point. The lack of options and boring weapon & utility skills started to grate on me and so I’ve left my Ranger at 53, waiting for a much-needed overhaul of abilities to pick up again. I really want to play my Ranger, but for now, my Guard is much more exciting & dynamic.
