I made this as a vid to demonstrate survival in the build and showed a few peeps here. It was suggested by a couple of them I post this for others to see.
Here’s a little 10 min skirmish (sped up first half) vs a Mesmer and a pair of thieves. The grouped me after and chatted a bit, no accusations of hacking this time though! Good fun!!!
Mesmer even gave props saying they saw a Ranger coming and thought “Easy kill” in his own words “We were so wrong”
Nicely done again, Sarlack.
I like to run the same except Signet of Renewal for additional condition removal. Personal taste I think :-) I also don’t use longbow for skirmishing, but I respect that you do. Does well enough, though it leaves me curious if you could get more out of your gameplay if you replaced it.
I’m already tinkering with GS in PvE to get used to it….but it’s sadly not how I envisioned my Rangers play so I keep going back to whats comfy (My Longbow)
My stubbornness is my undoing =D
Yeah, stubbornness seems to be the downfall of many of us. The greatsword is an acquired taste, but I think once you get used to it you won’t go back (or will have to use 1h sword when not using greatsword). The leap/swoop from those two weapons are just so nice to have.
I really like greatsword+shortbow when not running many builds, especially for access to two fairly low cooldown interrupts.
Nice vid. I love when people chase me in WvW thinking I will be an easy kill. Especially most thieves. Then I stop running and turn around and take them out.
I had as much fun chatting afterwards as the fight itself, The Mesmer said to my after “Your Ranger is INSANE” “Holy Crap are you Tanky”
I just love hearing these reactions from enemy players as it makes me think of the Glass is half empty attitude in circulation here. I’m glad you found it entertaining =D
Awesome job Sarlack
Thanks much Faux =)
Ugh, I play too many tournies…
I can’t stop cringing at your randomly timed dodge rolls… a few you seemed to use well enough to help kite, I mean before you turned around right after it and walked back into the thief’s melee range… Then when you stood on top of your own spirit of nature so the thieves… thieves that didn’t seem good enough to go out of their way to kill it…. unintentionally did while auto attacking you… that hurt. Its such a good elite but that’s pretty much the only mistake you can make with it short of timing the rez wrong or placing it slightly too far away from an ally so the rez wiffs.
Running muddy terrain could be kinda cool for you though, with the QZ nerf and your desperate need for help kiting in fights like that (any melee worth his salt will just eat your toon up atm) it could pull its weight.

The dodges aren’t randomly timed….I know my Endo regen rate quite well and use dodges to bridge to HoT and provide Protection boon to mitigate, I gain 50% Endo on weapon swap with Energy Runes…often after 2 dodges I swap weapon and get a Third Dodge…thats ~4 seconds of unanswered regen and helps sustain me.
If any melee worth his salt will drop me then BG/SoR are devoid of them as the only thing I lose to is a Mesmer (Confusion) or being out manned.
Does Gareth = DAoC Player?

Dodge rolls causing unanswered dmg isn’t really in question…
Anyways… I mean if you feel that they are being used well, go knock yourself out, just keep in mind dodging specific abilities and using it as a means to kite melee are some of the biggest percs of dodge rolling.
I’ve never played DAoC :/

After playing this setup for some hours I found myself doing the same, dodge is no longer used to counter ‘certain’ attacks, the regen is so good I have the luxury of using dodge for protection+movement! MOVEMENT I actually dodge to move lol
I think this build has made me kind of lazy as the mitigation is insane! I actually want to fall low on HP to proc barskin just for laugh some times :/
Haha Cempa, that made me chuckle, happy you’re back on the Ranger and tried it out.
I find at times that the build makes me a little bit arrogant (not in the sense I am sure to win but more in the sense that I am sure I wont lose) and over confident….need to show a bit more discipline >.<
After a couple of weeks straight of running this I find It’s so good in 1v1s that you begin to take it for granted
You run the Clerics set over the Apoth set correct?
Hybrid of PTV/Cleric, no condi damage and no crit rate/dam….all about bunker (20K hits/2K toughness/3K Armor/1000 healing (3 passive regens) Heavy Vigor/Regen/protection.
2K Power/3K attack and the Pet for DPS and wear em out..
