Sword/Torch Build. What will work best?
And my Alter-Ego- Kyoryu Gold, Mesmer, Thundering Hero, wielder of the Legendary Meteorlogicus!
I was about to make a similar thread so if you don’t mind I’ll just ask here too.
I made a second ranger
I really really like sword/torch with GS but the traits are really confusing to me here because it looks like if you trait for weapons you lose a ton of damage.
I PVE- so that is what I will use her for- I don’t really care about survivablilty since I am used to playing pretty glassy
Any help with a high damage build for those weapons will be awesome
In WvW, you are better off with axe/torch and Sword/Dagger combo. That way you get 1 condi spike set and 1 evasion/condi upkeep set.
Sword torch is nice, if you become very skilled at utilizing the fire field of Bonfire to keep flameshield on you as much as possible.

Sword/Torch Axe/Dagger is very strong to have hard evades on both weapon sets.
Sword/Dagger only has #5 for heavy condi application, but S/T A/D is a more balanced set up.
@OP, You can run Sword/Torch with Shortbow, or Axe/Dagger in a few different builds: Dire/Rabid/Carrion Traps, Settler’s/Apothecarie’s Beastmastery, or Dire/Carrion Spirit Shout hybrid build. All of these are very strong roamers.
I play my ranger casually from time to time, but have noticed I’ve been giving him more time than usual, and I think it’s time to get a little serious about it.
Let me start off: I love Sword/Torch. It’s fun, its fluid, and the sword is just great. So with that parameter set, I would like to try making a build for him around that.
I will WvW with him, and I mainly roam. I would LIKE to try the condi route, but if it doesn’t work, that is ok. What do you guys think, I was hoping the collective ranger community could help me round out this problem.
Thanks!
My suggestion would be run a Rampagers set with sharpened edges and maybe even sharpening stones, grab companions might, Sigil of earth, and then put 20pts in WS, and 20 in BM (take vigorous training)

Sword torch helps establish Melee range dominance, and it spreads out your condis and goes with the more sustained route where they can’t escape your condi damage.
Also, axe/dagger allows you to kite better due to the cripple + chill and it gives you an evade should you need it.
And from the sounds of OP he doesn’t want the generic WvW roamer build but just a build that’ll work with Sword/ Torch. Hell he might not even want axe or dagger as a weapon and might want SB or GS or maybe even LB in situations he wants range for.

Would be very nice damage. Seems a little glassy
I disagree with S/T being better. (pretend there’s a long winded reason here)
Thanks for all the suggestions. I will most likely run Sword/Torch and Axe/Dagger.
You are correct that I am not looking to be generic. I want to do something different, but still be effective. I’ll work on a build and post it for you guys to look at once I get home. Thanks again!

It’s glassy, but you have a lot of prot and vigor uptime and a lot of dodge rolling to keep you up.

So after some research, I have come up with this for my Roaming Ranger. Feel free to critique as you guys like, this just a start!

Never run Axe/Torch in pvp. You will always need a weapon-based evade on each weaponset. The reason people run Axe/Dagger + Sword/Torch is to spread the evade cooldowns across each weaponset. Any smart player would take advantage of you if you ran A/T; they’d just wait for you to swap and immob/burst you down.
I use sword/torch in PvP and WvW with my heavy conditions – bunker build. Sword is an all around solid weapon to right with, but torch requires you to time its attacks properly. Fire damage hits really kitten condition builds, so you need to squeeze all you can out of it. To get bonfire to work, you need to follow the flow of the battle to where your enemy will be in melee combat, or forced to be via cripples/immobilize or by exhausting their endurance. Throw torch should be used the moment they successfully escape bonfire, so to keep them eating fire damage for as long as possible. With a solid condi build you should do no less than 700 fire damage per tick and that’s pretty deadly already; especially because you will try to stack bleeds and other conditions on top of it.
In my experience, if you will be stuck fighting on melee range, due to your own choice, the nature of the fight, or due to your opponent’s pressure, them make them fight on top of bonfire and maximize your damage. If your enemy has very strong melee capabilities then it would be wise to use signet of stone + bonfire, have them waste their burst on it and possibly their heal as well, then follow through with your own burst to bring them to their knees.
For the record, don’t run Axe/Torch unless you know exactly what your are doing, it’s a kind of setup that is more successful on ranged encounters, give it a try against a thief in WvW if you need to understand why.

What is your build? I am not getting anywhere near the numbers most are – I’d love to improve.
Hello first post ever just to reply to you lol. I just recently started messing around with my ranger as well and I can tell you axe/dagger sword/torch with apothecary everything pretty much (im sure you can adjust whatever you like) is amazing. Go 0/0/30/30/10 getting the shout cd recharge 20% faster trait in bm and the natures magic trait that gives yyou swiftness and regen everytime you shout. Proceed to use the shout gaurd! And you have perma swiftness and regeneration. Theres more to the build but I found that the most interesting and it really does work well.
Also I use runes of the undead with the condition duration food with condi dmg crysals which im sure is prettt standard. Im sure the runes can be altered to your needs.

The most important part of the gear are the ascended accessories; they won’t be hard to get once you spend sometime in fractals. Dire gear can be pricey unless you craft it yourself, then (by today’s market) it can easily be around 30+ gold investment at a minimum. If that’s too expensive for you then you can get by with apothecary gear without losing out on anything. The back piece is a different story, if you want to go cheap select the ascended one with rabid stats.
