Sword auto attack cancels dodge.
Yeah, using sword (even though I love its fast dmg output) makes you go into an uncontrolable frenzy.
Your character just keeps leaping straight back at your target so fast that it even cancels out dodge while still using up the stamina for it.
Hacking your orbs since 2/11
It’s because the second and third attacks of the the auto attack are considered leaps, 400 and 430 units to be precise. You cannot take any actions during a leap in this game. Combine that with the fact that the animations for the last 2 attacks are significantly longer than the first, they aren’t long animations just longer than the first slash attack and they do look pretty cool, so the majority of time you’re stuck in a “leap action”.
The easiest solution would to be remove the leap affix on the last two attacks and reduce their range to 130 like the first strike.

I love my using a sword on my ranger, but this is just such a problem. It makes dodging incredibly hard. This becomes much more noticeable at higher levels/dungeons when things can easily kill you if you don’t dodge out of them. Neither Kick nor Pounce have the combo finisher leap so really I have no idea why they behave this way, but they do.
I hope it gets fixed soon. It makes 1handed sword unplayable in several areas because the mobs have aoes that if you don’t dodge you will be close to death.
Yup, I’ll throw my hat in this ring. I love the melee ranger archetype (was my favorite class to play way back in the original NWN), and I wish I could use Sword/Dagger on my ranger, but it always backfires and punishes me because I don’t have enough control over my character.
same here tired of being rooted in a game that stresses action and movement combat
There’s been some past discussion on this topic in these threads if you’re interested:
1H Sword and Responsiveness
I feel 1 hand sword could do with looking at.

The issue is that would ruin the entire idea behind the weapon of sticking to your target, hopefully they come up with a fix that doesn’t significantly reduce the efficacy of the weapon.

With 2 cripples and the 2 and 3 key’s movement, used properly, sticking to a target isn’t an issue with the sword.
I’m fine with the auto leaping, I think it makes the weapon unique. I’m just not ok with the lack of control that comes about as a consequence. They need to be coded differently than other leaps so that dodge works correctly with the weapon.

They could also just make them grant say .25 second evasion or something similar to the GS.
Right now it’s fun, but using a 1h sword feels like you are CCing yourself.
Have any of you tried disabling the auto attack of the “1” sword skill to see if that helps it out. If your not sure how to enable or disable auto attack here it is: Just hold control then click with right mouse button (enable/disable).

Disabling auto attack defeats the purpose of having auto attack in the first place. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to mash 111111111111111111111 all night long.
when i need to “gtfo”, i just de-select my target, and i stop sticking. You can do this while you are dodging away or quickly after.
I love my sword, and I DO find that this mechanic makes things difficult, but I always thought it was a built in to the pros/cons. I try to time things accordingly and think ahead
P.S, your 2 and 3 skill both grant Evasion, pair it with a dagger like me and u’ve got 3 evasive skills..
