PVE/little wvw or dungeons, no pvp
If I want to go sword/axe 90% of the time, with maybe a bow in my offslot for when really needed, is it doable?

If so, should I go mostly power?

What pet would work best with this?

sword/axe would be a power setup. No use splitting your stats for an offhand that doesn’t even touch CD.

Pets are an open book. Some work better depending on playstyle. Personally, I like how hounds can knock people down and prefer that particular element over other dps pets. Chills are always incredibly useful if you are playing melee because it allows you to smash people in the face without having to worry as much about them smashing hard back during those spurts of applicable frostbite.

Personal preferences.

Long story short, use all the pets and make an informed decision rather than hoping someone will tell you what the flavor of the month is. Funny thing about this flavor is that it tastes different for everybody. My personal advise though would be try out the hounds or spiders for the hard CC if you are going melee.

You might want to have another axe, a warhorn, and a longbow depending upon what you are doing. You will want the warhorn for the swiftness in open world. You occasionally want axe/axe when melee is not feasible, such as when the dodge lock will prove too dangerous. The longbow is an excellent long range weapon that is great for defending WvW, doing dungeons like TA, and fractals.

With the weapons you want, you should spec for power builds. I’d advise to have a berserker set, and possibly a more defensive power set as well, such as knight’s or PVT. You should be fine for the most part in berserker if you evade well, but sometimes having defensive stats is good, so you can swap your armor or your jewels to gain survivability without changing your build. I personally do this in fractals, where I run full berserker for trash mobs, then switch out to knights trinkets for bosses.
