The strongest point of the Ranger is of course not in melee combat, it’s far in the distant. However, I really liked the concept of a Ranger, being able to be in melee combat.

I have been running around with Sword & Dagger for a short time now, but as said in the thread title it feels really awkward and static. The Ranger is my alt, otherwise I play a Guardian with Sword & Shield and Hammer, but being stuck in place when making attacks feels really annoying, especially if you want your #1 skill to be auto-attack.

I can’t really dodge when I want, and usually take hard hits which either downs me or brings my health really low.

I have no problems with the #2 and #3 skill, only the #1 skill when I can’t really control my character.

Wielding a Sword as a Ranger is a nono? Or can it be put in good use?

My Ranger is only 30+ at the moment.

If the sword didn’t “stick” then you wouldn’t be able to stay on a moving target. Actually, a big misconception about ranger is that it cannot melee and a big misconception about sword is that it doesn’t provide motion.

In fact, sword on ranger is one of the most evasive, maneuverable weapons in the game. People think it’s not because of a misunderstanding about how it works.

You can hit 2 and jump back, select another target and jump towards it for really far, really fast motion. I’ve used this to move from the front to the back of an enemy zerg in wvw before. Also, you can keep DPS on one target, change targets, hit 3 and roll to the new target.

With proper use, melee sword / dagger or sword / torch rangers are difficult foes to defeat. When I roam, plenty of invaders want to take me out 1v1 because they think it’s an easy kill. I have a lot of fun beating supposedly “better” classes like thieves or warriors.

1h sword is fine, turn off the auto cast and reap the rewards of being the better player, in EVERY scenario not having auto cast enabled is better than having it on.

EX: PvP where confusion and retal are EVERYWHERE.

Btw, 1h sword can be used to throw yourself as far as 1680yds or so in a direction through clever use of the leaps on the 2 an 3 skills in the 1 skill chain (kick and pounce), so it certainly doesn’t “root” you, it’s just that you can’t move in a different direction while you’re leaping for your enemies throat.

I might have been so used to ‘’casting while running’’ that I haven’t really thought about how the skill actually works. Like the #1 skill on mose of the classes is just an auto-attack, it might be something else for Rangers.

I will play around some more and see what I can do with it.

I didn’t like this at first either, but when you have multiple targets it makes for some good target switching, and sticking onto a fleeing target is easy. The solution to remove it is what Durzlla said, turn off the auto attack and you get much more control over your attacks. I disabled my auto attack cause I found even with auto attack I was still mashing 1, because it’s a habit I picked up from other MMORPGS.

Not gonna lie, the 1h Sword (for rangers) has the WEIRDEST one skill out of all of them, the first swing is your average auto attack one skill, than the second (kick) is a 400yd leap that cripples the enemy for 2s or so, then the 3rd skill (pounce) is a 440 yd leap that applies might to your pet for like 5 seconds or something like that.

What makes it even weirder is you have 2 shots to hit something with your 1 skill before it goes back to the first one in the chain, so you can use your 400yd leap, clip some random by stander (crippling them) and then use your 3rd leap twice getting you ~1240yds away from wherever you just were, i know i’ve done that in WvW a few times and it threw quite a few people off xD.

I have to agree with the poster on this one. The second attack in the auto attack chain where you kick makes it impossible to strafe out of danger as is neccessary in this game. It locks you in place, which severely limits your options. I don’t know why everyone is saying it requires more skill to use. It’s just limiting. Not being able to move on a basic attack is a death sentence in melee. Anet should have fixed this a long time ago.

But you do move, you’re just moving 400yds forward, and as you could imagine you can’t strafe while you’re flinging yourself towards your target…

Ah yeah I meant circle strafe while using the basic attack, if they fixed this. All would be well. And no, I don’t consider not using the basic attack via ‘turning off auto attack’ to be a fix.

no able to dodge properly on autos is extremely annoying for sure.

Fact: every Thief tells you to “l2p” when the subject is to nerf stealth.

In previous games I’ve assigned caps lock to auto-attack. That would work a lot better than ctrl-right clicking the #1 skill.

Unfortunately, GW2 doesn’t have a binding for auto-attack. Even stopping my attacks when I get hit with confusion is a pain. I can hit esc, but that’ll also bring up my options menu, and I have to play for a while with it covering up part of my view. Or I have to turn my camera around and move forward (turning my character away from the target).

The game could really use an auto-attack toggle keybind.

I -think- there’s a cancel que bind, you could bind that to a key and just hit that key when you want to stop auto attack.

Guys, I don’t think stopping your ability to do basic strikes is a fix. It diminishes our DPS greatly compared to the other classes. Anet simply needs to change the second chain kick skill to not launch you at the target and allow strafing.

I’ve gotten so used to 1H sword’s attack that I don’t know if I would continue to use it if they fixed that leaping function.

I find it hard to believe they couldn’t make the ranger single sword chain mobile. I want to like sword/something, but I just can’t risk not being able to dodge roll at will.

The sword’s chain attacks are absolutely horrible to deal with, it’s even worse than the thief’s dagger chain, which I thought was bad. With the thief, you can at least evade, even if you don’t roll anywhere, but with the sword on ranger, you can’t even evade. It was getting me killed A LOT.

It’s a shame, because the damage capability of the sword is actually pretty good, higher than the SB, at least.
