The other day i was replaying Dragons Age Origins and i had an idea. Why dont Rangers in Guild Wars 2 can have the same tactical set up used in DAO partys, with his pets.

For those who doesnt know what the “Tactics” option is: A way to automate how your characters respond to situations in combat. This allows you to setup your party members to work together efficiently without needing constant direction.

The tactical set up would work only with the two auto skills from the pets (the F1 Auto Attack, and the F2 special skill wouldnt be affected).

The tactical screen would be placed on the pet select window and each individual pet would have a small amount of tactical slots.

  • Select the Pet Skill:
  • Choose the skill target: Pets Target, Rangers Target, Targeting the Ranger or Any.
  • Pets Target or Rangers Target:
    . Health: <100%, <80%, <60%, <40% or <20%
    . Rank (Exact rank, higher than or lesser than): Normal, veteran, elite or champion
    . Attack Type: Meele, Range or Magic
    . Stance: Runing Away or Casting Spell
  • Targeting the Ranger:
    . Rank (Exact rank, higher than or lesser than): Normal, veteran, elite or champion
    . Stance: Runing Away or Casting Spell
    . Quantity: 1 Enemy, 2 Enemys, 3 Enemys, 4 Enemys or more.
  • Any:
    . Entering in Combat
    . As soon as the cool down resets
    . Pets Health: <100%, <80%, <60%, <40% or <20%
    . Rangers Health: <100%, <80%, <60%, <40% or <20%

This tactical set ups could be enhanced with the beast mastery traits line and i think it would be a wonderfull idea to make the pets AI a LOT better!

I’ll give some examples on how this tactical set up could be used:

Red Moa:

  • Harmonic Cry: Any: Pets Health: <50%
  • Frenzied Attack: Pets Target: Rank: Normal or Higher

Krytan Drakehound:

  • Crippling Leap: Pets Target: Stance: Runing Away
  • Brutal Charge: Targeting the Ranger: Stance: Casting Spell

Forest Spider

  • Entangling Web: Pets Target: Stance: Runing Away
  • Poison Gas: Targeting the Ranger: Quantity: 2 or more enemys.

Of course the pets would have more tactical options for each skill, and the ones who doesnt like this system could use the normal pet AI.

I like the idea, however, IIRC Anet wants to keep the game “simplified.” We’ve been having enough trouble getting the suggested pet dodge button added, forget about a whole programmable doctrine system.

Personally, I’d like Rangers have complete control over the pet skills. It’d eliminate the issue people have of a ranger, “being two places at once,” and at the same time opens up alot of room for strategy when you can call a tail swipe or tackle EXACTLY when you want it.

My system would be something like this.
F1 – Sends pet to auto-attack
F2-F4 – Pet skills
F5 – Return
F6 – Swap Pet.
