Originally, and understandably still now, people were upset that duo bow wasn’t viable because they wanted to “range with ranger”. I forget the post (I’ll look for it later) but an ANET dev basically said they were for more of a Tolkien-esk approach for ranger. So this has been bugging me really hard, why don’t rangers have shield THEMATICALLY?

Makes sense to me. Maybe in an update? I’d also like to see another mainhand, like dagger

That was my thing in GW1, in a BM build.

yes rangers do use shields sometimes. While its not their bread and butter in most fantasy, the great drizzt dourden was trained by a sword and shield ranger

Most weapon sets make a lot of sense for most classes, as long as you don’t bring in unexplainable restrictions… i think it’s just a matter of them limiting sets a bit for now, hopefully they relax it!

I’m voting for mainhand shield. Cpt. America style.

Shield would fit thematically pretty well, yah. Especially a nice oak shield or buckler. Rangers are survivalists, and the shield is the ultimate survival tool on a battlefield.

Mechanically it’d also be a nice defensive off-hand that could help us improve our staying power even more. Might be nice for a bunker build or to keep the support ranger alive.
