Theoretical Soilders Build, Give imput!

Idk if I’d go for Spirits Unbound especially in PvP, I’d probably use the build more for defending a point than roaming around, it could work though.

True, I probably would swap unbound for some defensive trait in PvP because rangers are the god of holding points. But in PvE and WvW, theres so much running around that unbound spirits is a must you know?

If you’re in a ZvZ you don’t need it because you tend to stay planted at one area for long enough to not need it, and PvE it is a lot of times better to not take it so you can hide the spirit and not worry about the mobs attacking your area because you have multiple people there.

At high level of play (whatever that means) sitting on a point alone is worthless because your team should not be able to win a 4 v 5 every time.
Am I good?… I’m good.

Uh… if the enemy team is throwing 5 people at one point and you’re losing, you’re doing it wrong…

Clearly not

I think he means sitting on the point, rather than floating to midpoint and back. His point there is that the enemy team can play 5 people at mid by floating their backpoint player and they can win the 5v4 without facing the enemy backpoint.

His build is more on the tanky, i’ll outlast you side, than the super bursty 1v1 nature of the people that tend to be on back point. So he’d probably be better on mid point seeing as how he’d probably do pretty well against several enemies at once, at least long enough for a roamer to come in and turn the tides, so he would be AT the mid fight to begin with…

I would change your amulet and rings to berserker. It’s never a good idea to go without any additional critical chance. Even if you only have around 15% critical chance, you’re still going to get better damage, then if you have no additional critical chance.
I don’t think your rune choice is good either. The extra burn and chill duration isn’t really needed, as you have two sources of each. It doesn’t make a lot of sense to have burning in a power build, though. The dagger would be much more beneficial to you, as the poison from Stalker’s Strike prevents your opponent from healing too much.
For traits, you should consider getting Oakheart Salve, as your condition removal is on the low side.

I figured he was trying to be tanky which would be a very good reason for not taking berserker (only thing i can think of for taking soldiers), but yeah, i just noticed the Runes, i’d drop those and get something else.
And torch was good a while ago when you were power, but that was when bonefire became dangerous from both power and condi damage, i think it’s only condi damage now.

I’m not saying; go full berserker. The build is just a bit unbalanced, as it has a lot of durability, but not very good damage. He could also make up for it by going with bird or feline pets, but he has no traits in beastmastery, so getting a little more critical chance is a better option, I think.
I would also get Storm Spirit instead of Quickening Zephyr, by the way. The active ability can deal some good damage, and the build is already traited for spirits.

If this is meant for PvP you NEED empathic bond. You won’t last 10 seconds without adequate condition cleanse.

Uh, no? I have never in my life used that trait and have never had issues with conditions…

Ok… well. With the current condition heavy meta if one is expected to survive then condition removal is a must. Also, if it’s PvP the OP is concerned about then piercing arrows aren’t as necessary and those points could be better spent to get empathic bond which will vastly improve survivability.

Or you can, you know, dodge the nasty ones and kinda just heal through the others… You know, like everyone does with Direct Damage?
But i agree, i always look at builds and think of their use in a PvP sort of scenario though…

There are a lot of necro and spirit rangers out there and regardless of how much you dodge you will get hit by a burn proc.

If one burn proc is the thing that’s your undoing then you have A LOT more to worry about than condis…

Well the burn proc tics for 3-4s which is about 2k dmg from a ranger. Necros will have their burns tic for 6s which is about 4k dmg. Which will get reapplied every 10s so that means if you are fighting a necro from more than 20s you are already half dead from burning… using soldier gear he will be above half which is good but he won’t have the ability to out heal the damage by any means. Not to mention all the other condis, specifically poison that will cut his heals (once they fix poison).

I read through all the comments, and it makes sense how the torch doesn’t really fit into this power build. So, I put the dagger in place of the torch because 1: The dagger has a leap back, so in case a melee gap closes when you have the axe on, you can leap away and 2: it has a LONG cripple so that you can get a lot of hits in with your axe. In addition, it makes sense that unbound spirits would be relatively useless in giant WvW fights or even PvP when trying to bunker a point because it would be more efficient to hide them somewhere. Lastly, I traded in the runes to 5x Mesmer and 1x insert Power Rune because the Mesmer runes give me power and precision, but the 6th effect is useless (33% daze duration) so I just inserted more power in. This give me 11% crit chance which will somewhat buff my dps without taking away any of my tankiness. What do you think?
