Empathic Removal (Wilderness Survival Grandmaster) is probably one of our strongest traits; it’s actually one of the best Grandmaster traits in the game right now. I never leave home without it anymore.
Right now I find survival utilities the most useful. Combination of muddy terrain, quickening zephyr, lightning reflexes and entangle gives you great survi, even when you’re glass cannon build. If you combine it with Natural Vigor and Primal Reflexes traits, you get pretty decent evading mechanism. It works perfectly against thiefs if you use SB as primary weapon.

Lets see, empathic bond is one condition removed every 10 seconds.. So I have to ask, does Healing spring remove a condition on every tick (application of regeneration)? because I’ve been favoring Healing spring for condition removal.
but healing spring requires you to stay in the spring. while it provides a water combo field, it doesn’t really help put conditions on people considering crossfire requires a flanking for full damage.
not moving is generally death, for my playstyle. which relies on dodge to avoid damage, and troll ungent/fern hound for about 10k hp regen over 8 sec.

I don’t know what you’ve been feeding that hound, but my fern hound does not generate enough regeneration to heal 2k hp in 8 seconds. I only get about 120 hp per second from my fern hound’s regen.

It’s 130, the base level of regeneration. Pets do not properly receive your healing modifiers, or any stat modifier for that matter. The only way to increase their stats (which for some reason doesn’t affect healing power either) is to increase beast mastery/use the master’s bond trait. It’s unfortunate; my hound would give me an extra 2k+health per howl and my unguent already does 950 per tick.

Empathic Bond is ALL conditions removed every 10 seconds.
Leuca is correct it is ALL conditions
yeap, Empathic Bond is absolutely amazing on all levels

its amazing, if your pet is alive.
which is PvP it probably wont be, unless you tell it to avoid combat…
Mine pet can survive a lot (using raven/wolf right now) if you put 15 points in beastmastery and keep swaping it every 15 secs, its needed if its taking conditions from you (bleed, poison, burning). Im using sword+dagger / axe+torch , utilities poison trap, sharpening stone, lighting reflex and im doing fine right now. But tested only in turnament with pugs.

In tPvP even good players ignore your pet because targeting the pet is a stupid idea, you get pet low ranger swaps and keeps attacking you, you can’t kill that pet in 15 seconds and that pet will just constantly be swapping making you easily taken out by the ranger.
Personally I’m a fan of Natural Healing, it heals for about double sig of the Wild to you, and about quadruple sig of the wild for the pet making both of you a lot sturdier, it also scales off healing power, albeit it’s a pretty kitteny ratio!!
PS: I’d say make sure to bring an off hand axe, that reflect has saved me so many times that I don’t like going anywhere without it!

Personally I’m a huge hater of axe off hand for ranger. I think it has no place in pvp and is the worst off hand for any class in the game.
My reasons being : Can’t move while using it, good players will stop using ranged attacks, the axe throw is a useless skill, and the damage isn’t too great.
Yea, I think pets have a much harder time in dungeons than in PvP. It usually is a waste of time to kill a ranger’s pet, unless it’s a ranger that’s obviously relying on it for damage a lot, such as a sword ranger with a bird/feline.

You know what happens when they stop using ranged? You take no damage!! An what I normally do is I wait, for example second I see a thief/warrior/ranger/eng swap to a range weapon an pop their quickness skill you hit whiling defense and watch them scream with rage as their entire burst either redirects to them or is completely ruined (so many warriors killed with their frenzied kill shots… Even errrr web you pierce it through thief allies too >=D!!) and btw, try using it tactfully, IE stand in a bonfire, or your healing spring, poison cloud, ethereal field etc you punish your enemies for ignoring you that way by inflicting some nasty conditions on them and any other enemies in range or you could heal/cleanse conditions from yourself/allies if you’re in a water/ light field respectively
As for the throw realize that not only is it a boomerang you can use to hit people twice with its also our only 100% projectile finisher, that means if you hit someone twice with it after throwing it through a frost trap or fire trap or bonfire you apply that condition TWICE and I’ve hit people for 2-3k each way and I’m not even speced for damage (granted both were crits).
You gotta be trixy with the axe for it to be worth it, but ohohohoh when you are trixy with it you can decimate people!!
PS: I was told by a friend that piercing shots will proc the spirits effect each hit if the spirit procs on that skill, I’m gonna test that this weekend and if that turns out true, then path of scars and piercing arrows just became significantly better.

Yes, yes, you can kill bad players that aren’t paying attention to the huge, over-the-top animation of Whirling Defense with an axe off-hand. Good players, however, will just switch to melee and chew you up or throw AoE under you. The damage of WD is nothing compared to what a thief/warrior will throw at you.

Yes, because warriors and thieve had so many AoEs and I said to use it after they swap to a range weapon, if you use it while they’re running around with a greatsword or daggers you’re just a dumb kitten (unles they make it like the first game where you blok EVERYTHING with WD) and I take more people out with path of scars then whirling defense, whirling defense is just good for causing chaos in team fights or wrecking kitten who only use ranged/you catch off guard.
But lets just ignore a good skill because its not blatantly OP!! That’ll for sure mean its bad!!

In most builds particularly DPS – with the group not solo IMHO.
If you build tanky you can do some solo work but you won’t kill lightning quick most times.
be flexible to changing secondary weapon sets over your traited primary. offhand axe is great but against a team of guardians necro’s and a likely bomb dropping engineer I’m not using it. On map 3 I’m not using it positioning options to entice people to shoot at me are minimal but if I ever see a team of rangers and thieves that far I’ll consider it….
If I get into a match and notice the entire enemy team is relying on ranged bows rifles well heck I may switch to offhand axe as a secondary(particularly since I’m rarely in a condition build of any type).
And Durzlla we have other projectile finishers at 100% axe 4 is the only offhand one however which may be what you meant as sword axe combos give us accees to leap projectile and whirl in a single weapon set.
I don’t know that we really have 1 build to rule them all. We have builds that are strong at XY and or Z with vulnerabilities A B and/or c and being aware of your strengths and weaknesses and playing to them is pretty much what you need to do. Of course if you are pugging hotjoin it’s somewhat dificult to be assured your team makes doing that feasible.

@Arrys yeah I either pair axe with my sword (most common because dagger doesn’t allow me to take advantage of my ice field as much which ruins a lot of people’s builds I’ve noticed) or ill go double axe with a power build for aoe damage out the kitten.
And one thing I will say about whirling defense it may not e a god send against good players, but it completely ruins most phantasms and thieves guild, not to mention enemy rangers who run a lightning drake, the goal is to use the skill when it’s to late for them to turn back (IE while its in mid air, or on a multi hit like unload).
And having a leap, projectile, whirl, and blast(as soon as drakes work again) not to mention the combo fields we can lay down (poison, frost, fire, ethereal are all available with one build) makes it so you can pull out tricks that people don’t think rangers can normally do, pair that with condition duration (or hell just take runes of the elementalist for all the burning and frost increase) and you’ll force people to play your game on your terms.
Nothing’s better then watching a thief butcher themselves on your chaos armor + whirling defense as you pummel them with confusion stacks!

Build that attracted me to ranger was what I considered a fire and ice build using the combo’s and sword/axe plus broken drakes blast which I didn’t know was broken at the time. I’ve just never reverse engineered it back to my aquired understanding of making rangers survivable as it wasn’t that good in a DPS mode. Might have to do that. I love frost traps particularly on mesmers….And particularly because one needen’t improve condition damage to get full benefit from them.
Do we have a source for ethereal field asside from randomized gunk? Don’t think I’ve found one.

I use the warthog in PvP because he can get me a poison field, an ethereal field or bone someone pretty hard with up to 15s of weakness and bleeding, and then 30 seconds of poison, which translates into “Screw you! This is my town!!”

WHY DOESN’T ANYBODY TELL ME THESE THINGS?!?!? Never bothered to test, just assumed it was one every tick, and yeah, that makes it insanely powerful. Are there any restrictions on the conditions they can take? Stun/immobilize/agony?
