When I use my ranger to run solo pve, he is amazingly fun, but in group fights, boss fights, WvW, and PvP, I feel so useless. Could it be my build or is this generally a ranger problem?

Many here have issues with rangers, show us your build, some work much better than others.

Sword/Dagger, Longbow, 10 power, 30 precision, 30 pet

Ranger is easiest PVE king no doubtly, bunker ranger is a good 1v1 duelist in sPVP, ranger play irreplaceable role in wvw. But it’s ture that we are not that useful in dungeons and tPVP. Overall we are not the best, but not the underdog either.

Which traits you using? What stats? It could be build/weapon choices for your playstyle that might not be working out.

I used to run longbow/shortbow with power/toughness/vitality and did ok. Now I run longbow/greatsword with healing/power/toughness and do a lot better.

This weapon set fits a lot better for me. I also got a lot better at managing my pet and using my skills at more appropriate times.

It could be that you just need more practice in pvp with your ranger and not so much your build choice. Always watch your pet and learn to use it. That is my best advice. Also, what heal skill you using? Maybe you are using your heal too early/too late.
