Time for Ranger love!
I’m not going to deceive prospective rangers by pretending the class isn’t lacking in certain major areas.
That being said, I am very fond of canines, and considering the ranger class allows me to have two of man’s best friends by my side at all times, it is naturally one of my favorite classes.
The whole survivor/archer feel to it is also very satisfying, which is ironic considering I don’t even use a bow most of the time.
Leveling the ranger isn’t a problem. That part of the game is very fun and benefits from the ranger pet. Eventualyl though, the ranger runs out of places to explore and events to complete and wants to run a dungeon or do some PvP. The ranger faults become very obvious then, and it sucks because by then you’re invested in the ranger. You like the class, you built the gear and you’re kinda stuck by the time you realize the pet can’t do jack in a dungeon.
If you read the post you’d know I’m not saying the Ranger hasn’t got problems. I’m saying we all KNOW it has problems so why are people coming here to constantly repeat them to the people that know it has problems… You’re just telling other Rangers who are fully aware the Ranger has issues, that the Ranger has issues. It’s pure idiocy and pointless, not to mention to completely discourages anyone who’s planning on trying the Ranger out for themselves
I do agree Ranger is the best class i have 6 toons, necro, warrior, guardian, elemntalist, thief and my little asura ranger, over 2000+ hours played, most of them on my warrior tho, but i have to say, besides dungeons, the ranger excels on everything is by far the best for sPVP, tournaments, the necro is good aswll, and the guardian for bunkering but the ranger can do a little bit of everything properlly and that is why i love it, in WvW is probably the best, tied with the D/D ele, they have good mobility, survivavility, conditions, good CC. PVE is good for solo explore but is really not very good in dungeon compared with the guardian or the warrior, that is the major desing flaw of the game atm, they wanted to get rid of the holy trinity but the desingned the dungeons for holy trinity, swear i am still waiting for DPS/HPS metter hahaha… Anyway i like to see this kind of post, cuz everytime i see ppl whinning about rangers makes me wanna cry, they are the best class overall, by far, ofc they need some fixes a tweaks but what class does not?
I wasn’t trying to be debbie downer, I love the class. It has some things working for it, but I think it’s somewhat disingenious to say that the Ranger is ok. We need to keep voicing the issues they have or we’re not going to see changes.
Having said all that, I like the Ranger. We have the most potential out of all of the classes.
The class forums seem really unwelcoming to me. I get the impression that if I were to ask a question I’d most likely get told to quit ranger than any actual answer. I love my ranger. I completely dropped my Elementalist as my main and she hasn’t been touched since I started my ranger.
She’s only been 80 a week or two she hasn’t done too many dungeons(I don’t want to pug and there has been guild drama), but what I have done my pets haven’t died that much. At least not as much as people made me believe. In Orr, my pets and I don’t die on multiple mobs. I’ve mainly been pleasantly surprised with everything. Plus, I find the class a ton of fun.
Lvl 80 Sylvari Elementalist
My GW1 main/only is a Ranger by the same name, so in some ways I was “obligated” to roll a Ranger in GW2, if only to continue my personal lore/character ancestry. I had ups (pets, pets, pets!!!) and downs (why, pet, why???) with him while trying to figure him out, but am overall pleased with him and enjoyed the journey I had with him from Shaemoor to Arah, and wouldn’t have had it any other way.
I mean, in some ways because of how set back we are I feel like the Ranger is akin to Green Arrow from the Justice League, a human relying on wits and skill (and, okay, wealth) to survive in a universe with flying, bulletproof aliens, demi-goddesses, beings with magical/super-powered trinkets, Batman, and other superhuman characters/unwoundable symbols to contend with. Yeah, so maybe Superman won’t take us on Apocalypse runs, and Batman… won’t have anything to do with us, but when we manage to take out things that are usually relegated to the ones with superpowers/Batman, or even manage to take out a couple or more of the supers themselves, there’s just a greater satisfaction to relish.
I love my Ranger because I love the flow and animations of is melee specs. Funny part is this wasn’t what I was originally expecting from my ranger. I like most thought ranger equals bows and pew pew. Ranger has the most fun melee spec in the game (IMO).
I also love the BM line and how traiting into it truly turns the ranger into the great dynamic duo He is meant to be. I’ve gotten away with the most absurd things in PvE completing [Group] and World events alike solo. There is no other class I would rather roam and explore with then ranger.
I also get great satisfaction out of doing said epic events and insanely overscaled up events, when all the “survival bunker” classes wind up dead in the opening seconds of an encounter (looking at many dead guardians, warriors, thieves, and D/D eles). I then continue to solo said events, and rez the unfortunate survivors who were chewed up in the AoE.

Traiting into the BM line and running a bunker/conditions build was probably the best thing that ever happened to my Ranger. Before I pretty much always went for power/precision/critical damage builds, which are fine and all, but did tend to force me to stay back and “pew-pew” because going melee at higher levels with what’s pretty much a glass-cannon was just asking to get downed. After adapting a PvP BM bunker build to PvE and my playstyle, and subsequently finding that I can now at least survive, if not shrug off things that used to one-shot me (like the Priests in Orr), the game has become a LOT more fun for me.
Also, I totally agree about the melee flow/animations. Who knew giving a Ranger a sword can turn him/her into Yoda? :P
Too my threads on this forum are repeating all the problems the Ranger has. We all know the problems, the dev’s know the problems, and I like to believe they are considering what to do to balance it out, but balancing is tricky. I like to keep that hope at least. And all this Ranger hate really de-motivates newer players, including myself. The fact is if a thread is full of all problems and no benifits, and a Ranger who is lets say around level 30, not too deep into the game but not too early reads these threads. He/she is de-motivated and feels down about being a Ranger. So let’s release some love for the Ranger.
Personally I love the look, feel and animations of Longbow. I also love collecting pets, naming them and feeling like I have some sort of emotional bond with them.
I’m not saying Ranger hasn’t got problems cause it does, but EVERY profession has problems. No profession is perfect and all have their low points.
Also if so many people hate the Ranger so much why don’t they play a different profession. If you really can’t stand the Ranger then the Ranger probabally isn’t for you. Personally I’m in love with the Ranger and I think it’s the best profession in game right now, despite it’s problems and issues. It’s enjoyable and in a game enjoyment is all that matters…
ermm… didnt you delete your ranger? :p
personally i really like playing the ranger, it has its problems, its hard to fight good thieves and mesmers… still, its really fun to play
