Torches?
They’re fun to play around with, particularly if you want a flaming axe to bounce around in a cloud of mobs — but at the end of the day, burning is just another kind of damage, and there are lots of ways to do damage.
I prefer to have some kind of bow in one weapon set, and in the other I use Axe and Warhorn. The Axe has great multi-target attacks, and its chill skill is very useful. Warhorn’s bird-summoning attack does a lot of damage as well, but Call of the Wild is where it’s at. Fury, Might, and Swiftness for you and your pet, plus any allies helping you. How can you go wrong with that? It’s even useful out of combat, just for running around.
I’m using the axe/warhorn currently, but I was just looking for a change of pace. Was wondering what to spend my Pact Token on, and thought the torch looked kind of neat.
I was attempting the sword/dagger combo in pvp, but realized the greatsword rocked more than trying to time every jump/dodge while maintaining damage.
Well if you go in as a support Ranger, the torch can boost damage considerably. You can have blast finishers for an area might, or have in WvW a large chance of a causing burning with all the ranged people.
Torches work well on Thieves in my exp, make sure you get some kind of condition damage increase with that AND off hand traited.

I prefer torch as an axe offhand to warhorn. You get a lot of damage from torch and it can be fire and forget with skill #5 (enemies walk into the flames, you shoot or throw across the flames). Skill #4 provides a long lasting, high-damage condition. In groups I prefer warhorn because I can group buff and many other professions lay down fire fields for the combos. For solo PvE, I normally run around with short bow and axe/torch, although I vary this as the situation warrants.
Torch is a very good condition damage off-hand, but that’s all it really is. Condition damage. Pretty bland and boring in my opinion: I much prefer the warhorn and the axe.
