I have been using this build for awhile and even though i felt the shortbow nerf it really wasnt as big of a deal as most other builds.

I sometimes use entangle instead of RaO but I find entangle to be unpredictable.

have you guys tried this build or something similar? I especially love the fire combo field from the trap.

I use to run axe/horn offhand which is very nice in groupfights but recently switched to sword cause its so much easier to fight thiefs with a sword. and since 90% of your enemies in spvp are thiefs its really nice.
In tpvp or those rare matches with only a few thiefs I prefer axes

Yea trap builds work well with shortbow sure, shortbow has like the damage of longbow + survivability of signets built in, its a good solid weapon atm and allows for traps to make the difference. Problem is shortbow or 1h sword are our only viable weapon, now if I can play longbow with traps Id be a very happy ranger, Im sick of relying on 120 sec cd signets. In all honesty If signets had a shorter cd and affected both pet and master without needing to be traited they would be perfect. Atm they are just stupid.

I changed to a defensive trap/torch build that can take out 2 or more in a group before they know what hit them.

Is what I’ve been using for tPvP and WvW skirmishing. Works fairly nicely and if you aim it right you can get your trap to hit a large group and do massive condi dmg.

Swap between horn OH for swift boon out of combat and swap back to torch before combat starts.

Been using something similiar in PvE with WH and Torch. I like the swift boon for fast getaways and the condition dmg is pretty nice. I agree about engtangled, would be nice to ground target it.
I can stay away from RaO, since it’s probably the best elite we have.
SB still stinks for dmg tho.
Haven’t tried the build in sPvP or WvW yet til I get the hang of it

You can change out frost trap (or flame trap) for spike trap if you prefer. The build is lightly customizable, but in this build, I have no issues melting guardians and thieves. Necros and engi’s seem to be my hardest classes to combat.

Why are you using shared anguish and hide in the plain at the same time (wilderness tree)? Isn’t it a waste since they will be activated at the same time?
This is basicly my build for over a month (no viper but QZ, no frost but spike, but same idea), this works great in PVE, and I agree that I have no problem with guardian/warrior in pvp, but I doubt about VS thief, thieves in wvw melt me down in 2 seconds before I can see them. I have no chance to do any counter atk unless I know thief is coming and wait for him inside my traps. I would say anything visible, this build always has a good chance, but not against invisibles.

Is it ok to run a trap build in pve or spvp with power/precision stats?
Just the frost and flame traps since frost has nothing to do with condition damage and flame doesn’t scale well with condition damage anyway and still does decent damage at base condition damage. (Also makes a fire combo field)
Or is this a complete waste?
I was thinking of trying it with my greatsword..lay down the traps, leap in with my 3 skill

Survivability/trap/condition build is what im running and I’ve been dominating every single class ive come in contact with (minus mesmers who are a long and tough battle). Thieves have been the easiest class to kill once you realize what they are running. The more you learn how to play rangers the more youll realize how dominating of a class they are. Its unreal. The PvP i play is mostly real-team based against real skilled high ranking teams. Properly tuned rangers are a force to be reckoned with.

People need to stop crying about the nerfs and all that. If a mistake was made im sure it will be fixed in time. Learn to play with those obstacles for now, its not that much harder.

Thieves melt everybody. The strength of Ranger survivability isn’t in stats, it’s in traits. Primal Reflexes, for instance. I personally would have gone for Shared Anguish and Hide in Plain Sight (instead of Oakheart Salve and Bark Skin) in the Wilderness Survival tree, but to each his own. Bark Skin is a fairly underwhelming trait for being one of the grandmaster options. Under 25% health (around 5k HP for this build) you take 30% less damage, which means you can eat about 1,500 more damage. Kind of underwhelming.

For the record, Primal Reflexes coupled with Companion’s Defense is pretty awesome for survivability and makes up for a lack of toughness and vitality to an extent.
