Trouble with Thieves
firstly, build you have and supposed weapon set up s/he has?
p/d is a hard counter to everything ranger in most set ups and you’ll most likely lose this should both players have equal skill (this is just due to class imbalance, and multiple C&D targets)
d/d backstab builds are generally very very glassy. you blow their backstab through an early detection and/or reduce the damage taken from their hs spam. most spvp thieves (fotm builds, the common thief) will use d/d spec.
i like to use traps as thief detection warning and then spring an evade to dodge their back stab (also activating protection), hit them with a slow→stun, and then use 3 knockdowns from my fern hound + hyena + hyena summon. gc thieves are easily killable if you can hit them
If you think about it to much you’ll just get frustrated and rage rezz. I usually unload heavy and fast, leopard chill with wolf on switch and shortbow daze to sword/whatever and chill or spike trap. If they live then I’ll make the fight really slow for them, they want you and your whole zerg to chase them, so make them come into your hurt box and toy with them until they kill themselves if you don’t burst them down with control and damage quickly enough.
I’ve built for my cat and dog even though my points look more like the trap build, try and think about doing more with less going on with your build and cram as many effects into one trigger as you can.

I generally avoid thieves, Many rangers have issues with em.
Unless I cannot.
Lightning Reflexes, I cannt stress this skill enough its even better if you have it specc’ed.
If your Power/Toughness/vit specc’ed — Greatsword + Qz if there glasscannon you’ll melt there faces off. Use the GS #4 to block and counter them for the lols, Gs #5 to stun em if possible.
Signet of stone speec’ed grants you 6 seconds invun, minor time for you to think and act.
If they mass cloak with the little house on top, Use your longbow barrage in the field – (this can be a risk in itself) If you have a great sword jump in there and spam your GS# 1

When a thief kills me for this reason (invisible for well over half the fight) I just let it go. I generally see that class as something of a joke. I also live by the standard that if you have to be invisible more than half the time then you are no good at pvp anyway. That is why the class exists. For those sort of people.

Long bow AoE right on top of your self.
Traps.
Torch #5 fire field.
Wolf Aoe Fear howl.
Just a couple examples of things that can counter stealth. Troll ugnut or whatever its called keeps me alive against thieves. then I just make it dangerous to stand next to me in melee.
Even glass cannon build, I don’t seem to instant die against thieves, ever. Roll, heal, pew pew till they stealth, then lay down the AoE. Its not a guarenteed win, but definetly doable.
No stun break? Keep wolf on reserve with quickness on pet swap. When you get stunned, F4 then quickly F2. Wolf pops out and quickly fears them away, pop the 10 second heal, pew pew till stealth and then AoE.
imo invis has no place in a game they talk about making a competative esport. it needs to be adressed, teles like shadow step are ok, but the abuse with stealth these days in spvp is appalling.
theres a reason you generally have 3+ thiefs and mes in any group on any day.

ok as a ex thief play(aka i moved from thief to ranger) i will agree that barrage on shadow refuge is a good way to hit them, but most thiefs can take that dmg and stay cloaked.
a better idea is to have a wolf pet to fear them out of it.
if you can knockback, pull, fear, or anything to a thief that knocked them out of shadow refuge before the refuge dissapears, the thief will lose the 12 secounds of stealth. get the 3 secoudn reveal, and the render engine usually renders them faster than normal. meaning that thief who was planning to bunker down and w8 you out is now-
in the open
probably low on hp
unable to stealth
and rendered for you to shoot
so switch to longbow, rapid fire and finish them off =)
of coarse…most of this works only if the pet you have can use thier skill fast enough, that f2 skill delay stinks..
