Two Extreme Claims.....One Has To Be Untrue
The second one is untrue.
“Thieves” Don’t stand a chance? meaning multiple. Good luck with that.
Loch Ness Monster (nnnf)
Remember this game isn’t balanced around 1v1.
But I play ranger and I honestly think ranger takes it most of the time ASSUMING they are not built like an idiot.
Or both claims are untrue? I find a hard time imagining any thief player who has a 100% record against a ranger, and vice versa.
It depends on the individual skill level of each player, their own skill level and reactions to scenarios, and their build. A bad thief could lose whereas a good thief with the same build could slaughter the ranger every time.
Well I am assuming the people making the claims are good players. So good vs good takes away the excuse of …“he is only winning because he is playing poor players.”
Yes, I know it isn’t balanced around 1v1. The players making the claims are talking about 1v1 so that is what this is about.
I play a condition ranger and rarely see thieves I can’t beat.
At best they kite with shortbow for ages and just pew away since they ironically do a lil better ranged dmg than me.
When I play on my 0/0/30/20/20 AH+Shouts GS/Sword+Focus -or in sPvP Meditation- Guardian, Ranger is by far the easiest target as they do not hurt at all and go down with ease.

That’s a whole other topic. I watched a Guardian last night stand there and laugh as a thief attempted to take him down (both were 80) Thief died over and over and Guardian never went below 75% health.
equally skilled, a thief will take out the ranger. the initial burst cant be overcome. however most thieves lack skill.
The main advantage of a thief is that the ranger wont see it coming (which means in duels it cold be a lot closer). The ranger will need to get a lucky shot and destealth the thief to stand half a chance, sure we can fall back on traps, but again, players of the same skill level means the thief wont hit the traps until he’s ready to burst again, and burst hard.
Stealth is always an overpowered mechanic in MMO’s this version isnt too bad, but the ability to dance in and out of stealth is the issue.
Would run GS with sword axe weapon swap, healing spring, frost trap, QZ, LR, and probably entangle for the elite, wold still be tempted to run ROA tho. definitely companions defense and a decent toughness build.
Rangers just have to balance too many things compared the the relief thieves can give themselves with stealth. Survive initial burst, keep them from stealthing or find a way to see where they are, make sure health stays at a good level, oh and kill them. The thief just has to burst, burst again, run anytime health is getting low.

Signet of stone is great. It does have a long cool down but you will be able to survie the burst and counter with you own. The torch is great becuase one you set them on fire you still can see the the damage tics.
I think both claims can be true. There are alot of bad rangers out there most of whom complain about the class. The ranger claim he has no trouble with theives. That doesnt have to mean he wins every fight but that the battle can go either why.
I dont have trouble with thieves in general. But I have lost battle to a player who was hand down better than I was class really didn’t have anything to do with it.
everyone should fear becoming mentally clouded and obsessed with one small section of truth.
If you are a thief running a dmg spec. Then you just lost to me in a one on one. If you are a defensive thief then I just lost the one on one. However, If I am running a defensive build I just beat ANY dmg thief and the defensive thief can’t kill me (but I probably can’t kill the defensive thief).
The things is Good rangers > average thief. Good thieves > average rangers. Good ranger > Good offensive thief. Good defensive thief > Good ranger.
Am I good?… I’m good.
The game allows for a variety of specs and the players that discover the ’better specs tend to not tell.
Sure, some share but for the most part they won’t unless the spec is already widely known.
Don’t expect the tournament players who have spec that work against burst or bunker to come here and give you the knowledge they have that took them hundreds of hours of game play to earn.
Easy to figure out, both are false.
To the above post, that’s also false, highest ranked tournament players show their builds pretty often and honestly…there is no secret with builds and not really much of a choice…it’s not like you could make 40 specs for each class on this game :P

Neither is true because no one beats anyone 100% of the time…Though as a condition shortbow ranger Thieves are generally the first class I focus down due to their squishyness, while Mesmers are still the ones giving me the most trouble, as well as warriors and guardian (bunker builds)

As a ranger (non trap) I find guardians and mesmers to be the most difficult matchup for me. And thieves and warriors to be the easier ones.
I don’t kill -every- thief -every- time but it’s certainly not one sided!! Me and this one thief last night made it our goal to take each other out (I was a point defense he was a point assaulter) I’d say it was about 70% me winning, but he certainly got me a few times, also gotta admit I got some lucky ethereal fields, and had an advantage on him by just having to defend with my traps and fields where he had to full on assault me in an area that’s just not nice to stand in period, if it were open field like in WvW where the only goal is to “kill the enemy” it’d probably be more 50/50.
PS: initial burst is NOTHING when you have armor, so it’s cute that so many thieves/rangers think that the burst will be their saving grace.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
Any non moronic Thief just wont loose to a Ranger.
Why ?
Because dagger 5 thief ability grants Thieves to stealth forever, Thiefs can just spam it on the pet..

And I can just spam fire traps and smile to myself as they burn alive, because you know, thieves have soooooooo much health and all
PS: you can ricochet axes off walls and into stealthed thieves, it’s quite fun to do.

both are untrue
with my build i beat thieves often
but i also lose usual when they start to abuse stealth/teleports
or if i don’t react on time and get bursted down
In WvW I took on 2 thief’s with my ranger and destroyed them, I was shocked. In PvP, a single thief ran at me and destroyed me in seconds. I would say it is down to the players, not the class. As they say, it aint the size of the boat, it’s how you sail it.
most thieves assume rangers are glass cannons, like them. i just gave one a little surprise by being a semi-tank/crit sword/dagger
As true as Odin’s spear flies,
There is nowhere to hide.
I’m a main Thief (here trying to gather knowledge for my third character which is a Ranger) and I have to say I love facing Rangers in PvP because how little trouble they give me (I don’t remember any Ranger giving me problems while other professions can be really problematic depending on their build).
I think it’s a combination of Rangers holding one of my favorites Stolen Items (the Healing Tree: you steal it, use Cloak and Dagger and plant the tree while invisible, then use Sneak Attack which shoots 5 times, all of them combo finisher to get 10 seconds of Regen in adition to the healing from the Tree as it counts as combo field), and them not being able to do anything specially flashy that will change the battle conditions (at least not that I’ve seen). For example when I see a “clones army” Mesmer I inmediatly throw my Thieves Guild if I can because I feel the need to even the tables, but with Rangers I never feel the need of counterstrategies.
As others said the pet helps a bit to find a body where land Cloak and Dagger (even though to be honest, most times I ignore the pet and chase the Ranger, throwing some snares if neccesary). In fact the only Ranger I remember that gave me some battle was using a spider (I think Black Widow) using ranged attacks and snaring me. But even then it wasn’t enough.
I don’t remember being overpowered by Rangers (only in the midle of crowded battles where a lot of damage comes from too many different sources). But I think it’s not because I’m a Thief, but because they’re Rangers.
The reason my Ranger will be the third character I focus on instead of the second is that as others apparently think too in this forum, I feel like there is much work to do to balance them, and I’m waiting for that balance to come to really enjoy my experience with the profession. Right now the feeling I get when playing against them and when practicing with my ranger in the lobby (and even when a ranger comes with me in dungeons), is that they don’t have the potential other professions have to do outstanding stuff to change the course of a battle, and that they don’t bring anything unique to the table.
My Thief build is always the same (I like to roll builds effective in every enviroment) support based (Venom Sharer with P/D focusing on bleed duration as main source of attack, with Shadow Refuge and Thieves Guild to save me when neccesary). So I’m not your typical glass cannon focused on 1 vs 1 and run Thief, and still defend myself really well in 1 vs 1, but I want to roll some support with my Ranger too (here I’m hoping for a serious Spirits buff) and I don’t find myself as useful both for myself and for my teammates as my support+conditions Thief (even with Venoms needing their own buff too).
