Doing It With Style

Anyone else find anything?
Nah so far that’s it, i’m glad they did that though makes it much easier to rename both the pets at once when i’m switching em around.
Oh I love how our pets now react to stealth. Thiefs hate it when my pet immediately chases them again the moment they leave stealth. It also indicates me in which direction the thief is no matter how much culling there is.
I didn’t have the opportunity to fight a mesmer yet in WvW but IF the pet doesn’t lose the mesmer even after stealth ranger might immediately know which is the real one and be able to chase him down. I’m not sure about the mesmers but against thiefs it’s great really.

JOY! \o/
I was hoping it would be like that! XD

Oooh, this is interesting. Can you explain more in detail?
Does the pet chase the thief for the entire duration of the stealth, despite not being able to attack it?
Last night I noticed in WvW my pet was running back and forth as if it was chasing something, even when I couldn’t see the Thief. I didn’t really have time to evaluate it, but it looks like it could be quite helpful. I got the sense it might also have been tracking a Mesmer I fought, but I’m very uncertain about that at this point.
From what I have watched (while fighting you don’t notice so many things) the pet doesn’t chase the thief while he is is stealth. I think it comes back to you or if there is another enemy it will attack that one until the thief drops his stealth. That very moment the pet chases the thief again.
Especially in 1v1 situations its decent because the pet will stay close to you until the thief leaves stealth and immediately chase him again.
I played with a beastmaster spec 0/0/20/20/30 and used muddy terrain on the thief. After he stealthed I was standing in the middle of the muddy terrain field which was decent. He didn’t really dare to come close to me knowing I was pretty tanky and my pet would immediately attack him. He then decided to stay at range which was a joke because he wasn’t really able to kill me that way.
So much from the few fights I had. I really enjoyed it and I’m pretty sure this will make it possible for rangers to have good tactics vs thieves.
/e Oh btw from the last four thieves that fought me today I killed two, one escaped and the other one was too tanky so we decided to stop fighting each other^^

Ha I had that happen a few weeks back, we both just sort of stopped in the middle of the fight, it was like an unspoken “kitten it!” between the both of us.
It was hillarious. He wasn’t able to down me so I went capturing the camp but he started to kill my pet then and when a upleveled ranger came help him I chose to reset the fight (GS ftw). The thief and ranger tried to chase me then and since the thief was too tough I killed the other ranger, he got rezzed again from the thief, I killed the ranger a 2nd time and speed stomped it (pet swap ftw). We then stood in front of each other, the thief /cry on the body of the dead ranger because he wasn’t able to save him. It was a funny moment. I then decided to sit there for a bit and /bow to the tanky thief for the great fight and went on
I have had a perfect day of lick wounds… Anyone else?
Even though this is how things should’ve been from the beginning, when talking about how pets reacts to thieves coming out of stealth, I’m sure the so called “balance team” among the devs finds it to op, and they will nerf it soonish.
So what are the best pets to deal with thieves now?
Hey peoples….
Turkish here.
Do some tests for me, but after this patch, I was out recording footage all morning this morning in WvW, and something didn’t quite feel right. Before this patch, I regularly recorded hits from my Jaguar topping 3k, 4k, 5k, and sometimes even 6k. I mean, I hit like a wet noodle, as I am BM bunker spec, and my playstyle is all about staying alive while the pet tries to kill things. So this type of damage, I figured, was what it should be.
However, this morning, I went back through all the post-patch footage I recorded and in all the fights, even against people who were leveled up to 80, I never saw a hit from my pet even top 3K. I believe 2800 was the highest hit I saw, and that was only once.
I am worried. Very worried.
Was this just a bad morning // fluke, or did the jaguar (or our pets in general) get their damage stealth nerfed?!
Also, regarding pets seemingly chasing after a thief that hasn’t come out of stealth yet…
The pet is not doing this. What the pet is doing is chasing the thief that HAS come out of stealth, and has just not rendered to the player yet. I have seen this happen many times on my adventures in WvW. The thief will stealth, my pet will return to my side for a second and then run off in a particular direction. That is because the game mechanics of the pet can “see” the thief again. Call it culling, call it whatever you want, it is what it is. You can watch many many thief videos where the thief sees himself come out of stealth, but the person he is fighting acts like he can’t see the thief. It’s because he can’t. The thief hasn’t rendered yet.
Well guys, so many topics here, so many suggestions and still all we get is an icon change. Just look through the patch notes and you ll see huge gap between say mesmer changes and rangers’. Its a kind of a policy when they are aware of the problems, then promised to fix them, then kittened up and pretend that nothing happened. Disgusting.

I´m not so sure about that. At the moment I´m using birds as pets and they seem to deal less damage than before.
That is my concern. I am worried that , while they may not have nerfed the inherent damage of pets, maybe they nerfed the damage added by a BM build?
My cat’s damage directly after the patch was noticabley lower than pre-patch. I need all BM Rangers to check this out.
Wouldn’t that just be the icing on the Ranger-hate cake?
55% certain some pet damage abilities have been nerfed. Maybe to compensate for thieves not being able to abuse rendering vs pets anymore? I dont know, but one things certain, my thief has more survivability AND dps now……
So worried about this. All I do is WvW roam and BM Bunker is the only way that has been really successful. As a straight bunker it takes like 8 minutes to kill anyone, and as glass cannon running solo is almost always death.
Oh noes…..

Would be really nice to hear some official statement about this.
I wouldn’t exactly hold my breath on this one.
I think it will play out as a bunch of us testing, seeing that the damage has been reduced, protesting, being ignored, and moving on further into anonononimity…
I´m seriously considering about either re-rolling or even taking a long break from GW2 until this mess called ranger class is getting fixed. So frustrating and still no official response.
They don’t list many changes as far as I see.
When did they said “Yes we nerfed the poop out of you.”? No logs that I remember…
Sad tho.
To the guy asking about which pet is the best against thieves:
Hands down the wolf for me because of fear. Last night I was smoking thieves because my pet was staying right on his heels as soon as he came out of stealth.
Wolf just has to be in the general area for fear to hit, so if you know he’s close to you just pop it. Gives them essentially a 3 second stun. Here is where paying attention pays off big.
If the thief breaks the stun of the fear(I know its not a real stun, but you know what I mean he can’t control anything) immediately entangle his kitten and break him down. If he doesn’t then break it then I was hitting 5 on SB, immediately followed by 4 and 2, that should give you a second to close in if you haven’t already. Now hit entagle if you have it, if its on CD then put down campfire and wait for the body to appear.
Fearing thieves has made them much easier to handle, even if you don’t get the kill it gives your evade CDs a chance to reup and heal.

Runes of the Grove are useful for that as well, adds in yet another root that they have to blow a cooldown to break. Plus it looks just like Entangle so the thief “omg you hacking wid 2 entangle” spam in sPvP /map is pretty comical.

I haven’t used the runes of the grove in a while (about a month and a half) but do they still apply bleeding? Or did they get nerfed down to pure immob?
Definitely another option cap.
Really anything that can slow them down or prevent stealth for even a second. Most thieves go glass cannon on my server so one solid root could end it.
Stun on short bow with cripple right after is also a nice combo, if you can toss the torch before he hits stealth you should be able to negate a good amount of his healing.
Which means he’s unstealthing below full health or has to wait to regen, either way you control the fight now.
Use drakehound and wolves against thieves, the cc destroys them and stops their offensive flow which is what thieves are all about. (f2 + knockdown abilities)… Frost trap also.
Offhand axe for p/d thieves – #5 reflects their kitten back on to them , then do a fear , , path of scars, switch weapons and pets (pet swap quickness , swiftness and fury from weapon swap) burst em while they’re feared (if you have +10% dmg while flanking it hurts even more). Throw fire trap onto them when fear breaks off to get em before they go into stealth.
Also, knowing stealth time intervals is huge as well as you can guage when they’ll come back out of stealth, etc.
Trap build in general just murders thieves, both burst and p/d condi.
Anyone else also notice with 1sec out of combat CD they took away the stow out of combat giving haste when entering combat and bring pet out of stow.

I cannot recall a stowed pet being unstowed ever granting you and your pet quickness.
Pets with buff/heal F2 skills now cast them immediately without having to move near your target enemy

Thanks for the suggestion, from what I can tell trapper build + maybe BM combination and decent to high condition damage helps to kill p/d thief, along with some clever tactics of course (those hits need to land!)
Back to topic: Lick Wounds / Search and Rescue has been 50/50 success rate for me, way worse than prior to patch. Don’t know if this has got to do with patch but maybe it does, aside from what’s already been said on the new ‘undocumented’ changes, this one is on the negative side.
