So basically I’m roaming on my warrior in FOTM when I see a upscale ranger and a guardian approaching toward me. I make the first move and attack but suddenly I find myself in downed state and finished immediately after. I check the combat log and it shows I was hit with Maul from a upscaled ranger for 17.4k.
I admit I don’t play ranger and understand very little about them but this doesn’t feel right. I’ve never seen/heard/experienced this before after nearly 4k hours in this game.

Is this a bug? or is it something related to FOTM?

There is a buff you can get for an additional +10% dmg from the forge I believe. If you combine that with the signet of the hunt/wild combo(if built to have signet’s effect you) in power/zerker gear it’s very possible I’ve seen it break 20k. Do keep in mind you can be lvl 79 in decent gear and still be upscaled.. more than likely the person that hit ya was 60-70s with that figure

You seen it break 20k in WvW/PvP? I’m just having a hard time believing such thing even exists in the game anymore (after all the nerfs). Most I’ve ever been hit on my warrior is about 10k from a full glass thief’s backstab and I thought that was very high :S

In WvW 20k yeah. If you do the math its quite possible with all the boons/buffs/sigils/gear +signets/moment of clarity combo it’s just extremely unlikely all the stars will be aligned for such a scenario which is why it’s rarely seen but indeed does happen. The vast majority of rangers don’t even run the build this is possible with which makes it even less likely to be encountered.

There’s a thread on the Ranger forums here showcasing the damage Maul can produce if built to accomodate it. Stacking vulnerability also helps to increase the numbers. With enough buffs and traits/boons (which the Ranger profession allows for if done properly) you can hit up to 23k. Still, that particular build is very, very, very glassy and isn’t really good for anything but burst damage. A stiff breeze could kill you so if you’re running that build you better know how to dodge like a pro.

Even doing a kitten poor job at it on my thief, I can break 12k on backstab easily..hell I’ve been hit for 10k backstab while being full bunker on my Ranger.

The key difference between the Ranger and the Thief doing it is, My ranger has to run up to you, and not use any other attacks before hand (otherwise you’ll waste the 150% Signet of Hunt bonus) where as my thief can instantly teleport to you, from 1500 Range away and hit you with A high Damage mug/cloak and dagger/+the backstab itself all kitten near instantly.

And the swaggering Warrior; overconfident like Crom in his mountain dismissed the Ranger as if it was but an insect unworthy of his gaze.

But this one little Ranger was so tired of being downtrodden, ignored and ridiculed for more than a year and came prepared. And for just one single moment in time managed to pour every ounce of his rage into that single Maul with all the power he could muster, calling on the strength of the land itself! One Shot … One Kill!

Now you have experienced what most Rangers have been going through all this time.

Hit a player with my Ranger earlier today (to prove a point in another forum), using Maul, signets, valkyrie gear, and an attached Air Sigil, this is the result::

Nearly 20,000 damage. I got killed 3 seconds later because I ran head first into an enemy zerg, but, that’s what I get for being careless and wasting my utility skills!

Rangers have never really been as bad as the “public perception” of the class is. It’s just really easy to be terrible on a ranger if you don’t know how to build or what to do as a result most people just assume they’re awful at everything because the bad ones are everywhere. Like the bow bears in clerics that ONLY auto attack and sometimes remember to heal themselves ~_~

Being a one shot cannon is not my idea of best play. If the sucker is glass, then if that guy had an extra buddy, then the ranger could have been easily targeted first. Then you’d have two downed corpses, and two guys still facing each other.

I can understand why it’s not in high use.

Lol….ummm…you need to check the world buffs you can gain in that area.

Being a 1 shot cannon is not the best way to play, but its fun to watch warriors scatter after landing a sucessful attack.

I was referring to the ‘downtrodden, ignored and ridiculed’ aspect which led up to this. Someone just made the mistake of underestimating their opponent and found out that this particular Ranger had an ‘all or nothing’ attack and used it at the perfect moment.

It is really easy to be terrible on any class if you don’t know how to build or what to do. But Rangers have rather limited tools to build with compared to most other classes, hindered further by a broken appendage. That does not mean it is impossible to make something with the functional scraps. But it also does not mean that Rangers do not need help; especially when someone felt that he could safely dismiss a Ranger (and could have easily dodged that highly telegraphed attack). For next time he will be ready for this trick, and then the Ranger will indeed be another ‘free bag’.

It is good to hear that you have taken the defeat (and my horrible attempt at storytelling) with dignity and honor. Others would have probably screamed murder and demand nerfs. But not you, so I applaud you for your good sportsmanship.

You will not see many Rangers like that one though, as they are very rare and only get one shot at that much damage (which were probably also enhanced by the unique buffs on EotM). As such you were probably witness to a once in a lifetime experience. But it’s pretty cool that this game can still surprise us every once in a while, is it not?

As Disastro said, they are not as bad as people perceive them and their biggest problem is, people do not know how to build them properly (especially for damage).

I don’t generally run around with a GS myself (unless it’s for mobility), but I can consistently hit most targets for over 17.4k with a long bow (rapid fire). It’s also kind of funny when we morph into that bear form and can hit people for over 30K. I should give Maul a try and see what kind of numbers I can come up with on that.

That 17k maul came at the expense of full zerker gear and two long cooldown utilites all aimed at one attack. It’s basically a thief if they could back stab you 2-3 times at once but with only one attack and had to forfeit all stealth ability to do it.

One of the reasons they are changing crit-damage to Ferocity is because of how crit-damage scales (broken).

At level 18 I upscaled to 110% crit-damage, 53% crit-chance, and nearly 2k toughness.

It’s an opening-shot one trick pony because it lacks sustain. It:

• Uses a signet which with a particular GM build gives a 50% damage bonus to the next hit when activated (30 sec CD).
• Uses a signet which with that GM build gives a 25% damage bonus for 8 seconds (60 sec CD).
• Is a Valkyrie (PV-crit damage) build. It gives up crit chance for vitality (and uses a trait which adds 5% of vit to power). There’s another trait which guarantees the opening hit in a fight is a crit, which is where most of the damage comes from (about +150% compared to the +75% from the two signets). After that opening hit, you will almost never be crit again.

Don’t forget that if he was using a long bow you likely had 20+ stacks of vuln on you before he popped Signet of wild, stun for moment of clarity, Then S of the Hunt→ Maul. It is the definition of one trick pony. Fun to hit, but overall unreliable.

Mother of god…. Hardest I hit was ~25k, I figured that was maxed out… It landed on a bunker guardian and necro, woulda killed a thief/warrior too but they had aegis up, always hilarious watching the survivors scatter though.

The the rangers equivalent of an all signet thief 1-shotting people with BS. Big burst but cant be repeated often and leaves you with very little defensive options other than running away.

Its biggest strength though has got to be simply that noone seeing it coming from a ranger :P

Technically the thief can still backstab again afterward within 4 seconds…. it won’t be as high, but it’ll be pretty dang high even without the signets.

Same trick can be applied to your first longbow autoattack. I got tired of getting pooped on. These days I just sit behind my roaming team and pew pew pew in full zerker.

I use it in hot join pvp and laugh so hard when i crit eles/thiefs for 10k mauls
