I would argue anyone that doesn’t use defender runes in WvW is just plain wrong. :P
Well, Runes of Defender are good in WvW. I used to use them on both my Ranger and Guardian. In fact, they are a bit OP on my Guardian when running mace/focus. That blocking
However I would highly recommend Runes of Durability. If you haven’t tried them yet, please do. Just a tiny bit of PvE required but well worth it.
(1): +25 Toughness
(2): +5% Boon Duration
(3): +50 Toughness
(4): 25% chance when struck to grant nearby allies protection and regeneration for 3 seconds and resistance for 1 second. (Cooldown: 20 seconds)
(5): +100 Toughness
(6): +15% Boon Duration; +125 Vitality
With my current set up and those runes it makes WvW a breeze. Super tanky and wear the attacker(s) down until they give up or they die. Their choice. Scouting is safe. Flipping camps and NPC’s a no brainer.
Runes of Defender are good though, no doubt. Just not for me or my current build.

(2): When you block a foe’s attack, gain 1 second of regeneration.
(3): +50 Healing
(4): When you use a heal skill, gain aegis for 5 seconds. (Cooldown: 10s)
(5): +100 Healing
(6): When you block a foe’s attack, heal yourself. (Cooldown: 30s)
