I’m not here to discuss the ranger changes. I’ll take every single one of them and be patient with the promises.

but what I WON’T take is the dodgy, “sweep it under the rug and they’ll forgot” nature that ANET has taken with our Short Bow.

ANet do you have any shred of sympathy? You straight up LIED AND HID A NERF IN A ANIMATION FIX. No we have not forgotten. You need to REBUILD our trust and the FIRST step is communication.

The nerf itself has been debatable but as a WHOLE the ranger community has agreed that the QZ+SB is not working properly. It feels like I’m shooting with a lead arm when I should be “actioning twice as fast”

Tell us, because you have not commented ONCE on this issue even given multiple threads and outlets where the topic was brought up:

IS SHORTBOW 1 WORKING PROPERLY WITH QZ ACCORDING TO YOUR TESTS AND DO YOU PLAN ON DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT 3 PATCHES LATER?

I don’t know about other rangers, I’m sure some have sucked it up and dealt with their new SB (or don’t even use QZ anymore), but I can’t bring myself to use it.

A 7% decrease shouldn’t make us feel this bad about SB, it should make us go “yeah I guess its slower now, but I still like it.”

INSTEAD I cringe every time I try to use it as our form of burst in a duel or pvp. I have just stopped using it all together.

We’re not asking for much, just TRANSPARENCY on this issue where there have been none.

This is about trust and we trusted you to make the Ranger equal to the rest of the world and you have not.

I live close to Bellevue – would you like some of us to come visit in person?

Truthful communication starts in the game and continues in these forums but we have not been given the truth, what is really happening and why we are so much less valued by Guild Wars 2.

One of my most visceral feelings is about our pets; these hugely magical creatures that can kill us before we tame them can’t do a freaking thing after we tame them so why bother making them so ferocious in the wild if we don’t even get the opportunity to keep the names (goes back to default every single reboot, terrible programming), get to have a conversation with them (they are magical for gosh sakes) and don’t have any relationship with them, not even good enough for them to attack what is dangerous without our mashing the buttons over and over and over again hoping that our tamed pet, our beloved even at level 80 will just go a different direction, attack something at random (really? agro’ing from a pet we tamed and depend on to have a bit of discerment and some sympathetic thoughts shared between us… you guys are really dropping the ball on the most important character in any MMO.

Static is bad but we’re close to that with the pets and the relattionship/underpower of these magnificiently characterized animations… I think we all lose because our other “half” isn’t doing it’s part for our survival but if the same animal at our level attacks us in the wild we will be hard pressed to put it down alone, one without the other – in other words it takes one of them and two of us…. still doesn’t make sense.

Signed. At least they told us that the traps cool down was a but then proceeded to address it. In this case we were told it was an animation issue. Once players started crunching numbers, which btw they always do, it was determined that the fix had a major impact on SB damage.

The response then changed to something about rangers relying on the automatic fire too much and how it wasn’t fun for anyone. Wasn’t fun? Interesting. I enjoyed the utility of skills 3-5 and liked that those skills were as needed. That to me was fun. But hey, what do I know.

In the end, the SB was nerfed and pawned off on a truly arbitrary, bias opinion that never actually explained why the damage was reduced. If it was an intentional nerf, say that. Tell us the amount of damage you decided to lower the SB by and be done with it.

That was the first time I saw Anet act deceptively. The second time was when we were promised major changes to the ranger profession. It’s hard in retrospect to claim that we were lied to. Without actual information, all we can do is balk at Anet’s vague and superfluous “teasers.”

In summation, these misleading posts aimed at calming the ranger community are nothing more then shovel after shovel of propaganda.

Are ranger’s completely broken? Maybe. Depends on who you speak with. I personally like some of the builds I’ve come up with. Is the overwhelming perception that rangers are broken? Yes. See the difference there. It doesn’t actually matter if you magically balanced the class through the numerous nerfs and adjustments. The issue is the perception the community has.

I personally have been subject to discrimination based on my profession. I’ve personally seen /m LFG stating that rangers were not welcome. I’ve had others laugh at me for even playing a ranger. Do you know what that feels like?

This perception is an extension of the perception of the people who actually play rangers. When we ourselves cannot defend the legitimacy of our profession and have no indication of the direction the class is heading, how can we as players even take pride our class?

But you are not supposed to like using an auto attack. This is a dynamic game that far surpasses the need for a one – three stage auto attack that happens to be a part of almost every single primary hand weapon in the game. You should continue to dodge, stun, or provide buffs. Damage doesn’t actually kill monsters; a dynamic rotation does!

Besides, who actually needs to tag monsters? Farming isn’t encouraged nor is it required for dynamic events… like for monthlies or one time “world changing” events. Oh wait…

When you TREAT us like trash ANet, the perception OBVIOUSLY will become that you hate the ranger class and its horrible. And it doesn’t matter how many small buffs and fixes you peacemeal out, it will never change until you change how you TREAT AND TALK to us.

Your cookie cutter promises aren’t going to work on us anymore. “We’re workin on rangers we swear” “we know rangers have issues/bugs be patient.”

Some of us, myself included, understand. I consider myself a patient person, I know updates don’t happen overnight and I’ll wait for as long as it takes for you to do the changes you want to ranger.

But as said before I WON’T stand here while you completely IGNORE this issue by skirting around it, and not even COMMENTING on it.

I read the post referred to by Solid Gold. Are we supposed to take THAT as your feedback? Is SB still “perfectly” fine? If that’s how you feel can you not look us in the eyes, in our own forums, and say as much? Can you not SAY “We’ve looked into SB+QZ, its working fine, there are no plans to change it at this time.”

I mean seriously, there’s a REASON you’re avoiding this like the plague. If its as petty as “well we want to keep the nerfs, but if we say as much the ranger community outbreak will be far too much to handle, so let’s ignore it” then ANet’s Community team has lost any last shred of respect I have left.

I like at this point some of the community would just like to here them say that instead of the “it was changed to fix a glitch or spamming 1 is not fun” that has been said before.

It has stopped being undo this or else and more just say the real reasons even if that reason is “Our bosses warrior got mauled by it too much in interoffice play and now hates Ranger for it?” (hypothetical example not my view; I think it was a case of the nail that sticks out.)

Pets have been hidden due to rising Player complaints.

I guess the only effective way is to bring the issue to more public attention, like get mentioned on popular GW2 fansites or blogs. The devs don’t really have to give a beep about the posts on this forum. Any “inconvenient” topic gets deleted or merged immediately, and other people might only think “Ranger is a less popular choice of class due to personal preference. That’s it.”

Honestly…I see no problem with it as it is. Even if they nerfed it, deal with it. I still use it when in the mood.

I hear people kittening about shortbow damage compared to thief shortbow too…and I mean…really? Is that a joke? LOL!!!!

All shortbow skills for ranger have a 1200 base range too. The base shooting speed of 1 is almost 2x as fast as thief’s 1 as well.

People are too busy kittening, to actually go learn to get better. They just want everything baby fed to them. There’s nothing wrong with shortbow 1.

Not sure if you’re trolling, playing the devil’s advocate or actually are serious with your statement, but here’s nevertheless a simple explanation on the mechanics of the mathematics involved in calculating percentual change.

Let x(1) be the original value of attack speed without QZ, and x(2) the post-change value

x(1) = x(1)
x(2) = (1 – 0.07) * x(1) = 0.93x(1)

Let x(QZ1) be the original value of attack speed with QZ, and x(QZ2) the post-change value

x(QZ1) = 2x(1)
x(QZ2) = 2 * 0.93x(1) = 1.86x(1)

To calculate change in attack speed, divide the post-change value with the pre-change one and subtract the result from 1. What you end up with is the following:

delta[x(non-QZ)] = 1 – [x(2) / x(1)] = 1- [0.93x(1) / x(1)] = 1 – 0.93 = 0.07 = 7%.
delta[x(QZ)] = 1 – [x(QZ2) / x(QZ1)] = 1 – [1.86x(1) / 2x(1)] = 1 – 0.93 = 0.07 = 7%

delta[x(non-QZ)] = delta[x(QZ)] = 7%.

Quickening Zephyr still has a very warranted place in the selection of utilities, due to the fact that it also affects your pet. Pick a DPS pet and check the damage output with QZ – you’ll be positively surprised. Which is always nice these days!

Therefore if you assume you shoot 100 arrows in 4 secs (I wish) you would expect QZ to make it 200 arrows in 4 secs. However, people have tested it, and in reality it would shoot about 180 in 4 secs.

I’m just rolling with the numbers you provided, so obviously they aren’t accurate. It’s supposed to shoot AROUND 16 arrows in that 4 seconds, but it tends to be around 12-13 because of the 40ms staying 40ms.

This is true. Because it wasn’t an actual 7% speed reduction but rather a static delay they implemented, QZ would be hit harder than it should. Thanks for providing the reminder!

I haven’t played my ranger for a while but I couldn’t believe how weak she is compared to my warrior going against the karka. I can take on 3 karka or drakes easily with my warrior. Anything more than 1 on my ranger and my pet gets insta-gibbed.

At the very least they need to reduce the CDs on our abilities.

No, they weren’t, certainly not in PVP and they had severe bugs that could make them a liability in PVE as well. I quit WoW because my death knight with crap armor, a tanky build and virtually no experience as a death knight in PVP could faceroll hunters that were way more skilled than my hunter was. I figured if these guys couldn’t beat a crap dk (me) with no idea how to PVP properly as a dk what chance would I as a hunter have against a properly specced dk who did know how to play his class.

The auto target/auto shot bug could cause you to accidentally pull mobs and wipe your group, and there was no way to avoid it. I did a video proving the existence of this bug and showing how it worked, and that the bug could occur within as little as 3 frames of video making it humanly impossible to avoid it. That bug had been around for years and Blizzard did nothing about it other than blame the players for it.

Ranger is severely kittened and poorly designed in this game for both PVP and PVE but it is no where near as horrible as the hunter class in WoW was.

Communication by the devs in this game is poor but nothing close to the clueless arrogance Ghostcrawler was famous for.

I figured if these guys couldn’t beat a crap dk (me) with no idea how to PVP properly as a dk what chance would I as a hunter have against a properly specced dk who did know how to play his class.

The auto target/auto shot bug could cause you to accidentally pull mobs and wipe your group, and there was no way to avoid it. I did a video proving the existence of this bug and showing how it worked, and that the bug could occur within as little as 3 frames of video making it humanly impossible to avoid it. That bug had been around for years and Blizzard did nothing about it other than blame the players for it.

Ranger is severely kittened and poorly designed in this game for both PVP and PVE but it is no where near as horrible as the hunter class in WoW was.

Communication by the devs in this game is poor but nothing close to the clueless arrogance Ghostcrawler was famous for.

WoW is primarily a PvE game, so of course I was talking in that context. Hunters have always been utterly crap in PvP though, one huge reason being the stupid minimum range which has now been removed. And Ghostcrawler has done a lot of good to the hunter class in PvE. I don’t play PvP on my hunter for very very obvious reasons.

As for the changes. It’s an MMO. People cry. People cry all the time. Nerf this. Nerf that. Don’t nerf my favorite class/build which is so hard to play…

Not matter what a developer does, there’s always a small, unhappy contingent who have to have it their special snowflake way and can’t deal with the fact that what was nerfed was so kitten over-powered it was ridiculous. So there’s no point in continuing to address it. You’ll never be happy with the answer of: it’s fine and the design mistake that made it OP was corrected.

Instead, you’ll just keep whining about it. We all know it.

(Hint, a 100lb draw longbow should be significantly more powerful (and massively out-range) than a 60lb draw short-bow. That short-bow should have never been OP like that…)

meh, I was mad at the time but it is all water under the bridge at this point. As a skill , SB + QZ probably deserved to be nerfed on its own merits.

What I don’t understand is why this one OP skill wasn’t taken in the context of the entire class. Our last 3 balance basically worked out like this:

-Nerf shortbow + QZ
-Nothing
-Underwater buffs

Basically Arenanet is saying “We don’t have the resources to fix the fundamental issues with the class but we did have the time to squash the one thing that worked to balance them out”.

As a ranger running 30 WS , toughness gear and toughness runes I still wonder how I can get BS for 8k and this isn’t on any list to be balanced.

We share apocalyptic views, how comforting that we see it too.

While you make a good point in the how you ask matters in most things MMO’s it seems that continued complains is the only way to make sure an issue is not just brushed under the rug.

The complaining seems to come from the fact that it looks like short bow was nerfed not because it was overpowered in big picture, but because it was outshining the other ranger weapons thus further limiting diversity among rangers.

(Hint it is a game and just your need for short bow to be weaker than the longbow (because it is that way in real life is simply silly)

Pets have been hidden due to rising Player complaints.

The anger the OP has is completely justified. I remember a John Peters post saying he doesn’t mind the anger, because it shows the passion and feelings that certain changes are eliciting.

So we should show ANet how mad we are! STILL!

‘Deserving straight answers’… this looks like nothing but some kitteny excuse to feel like your entitled to something. Anet made a change in the game, it didn’t break the class, it didn’t tear our world apart. I’m sorry about your woes as a ranger who feels a lil butt hurt over having one weapon minorly hit, but it isn’t all that important.
Losing a dozen percent of dmg on one spammable won’t impact you terribly unless you plan on playing some top tier PvP.
I can next to guarantee no one here is doing that.
Until then you can make up the lost dps a few times over by playing better.

Yes they said they had patches for rangers, no they didn’t actually impliment them.
That is far from the worst thing I’ve seen a dev team do, FAR from…
warhammer online had a class that could aoe stun an entire enemy team for 7 seconds and then burst them all down in that time… yeah… losing a dozen percent from a strong weapon, or forgoing a change making a few allright weapons strong isn’t even comparable.
Even with blatantly annoying kitten devs, warhammer online was probably one of the best PvP game ever.

These guys are doing fine, give them time to get their kitten together as they get ‘a game released months before it should’ have all cleaned up… then they will get their fingers more wet in dabbling in small numeric tweaks and underbalancing issues.

And you wonder why devs are hesitant to speak on forums, half you guys are outright crazed over minor kitten. Its a game without a sub fee, sit back, relax and enjoy the show…

Well even if you didnt care for the change,even if you think that it didnt changed much and was a fair desicion,you cant ignore the fact that there was not straight answers in this matter.
First was an animation glitch that noone ever saw it ,then a 7% nerf for a spammable,no fun ability and after this silence…Well some state that with QZ its slower.The fact that they dont come here to prove us wrong is very suspicious.
A simple “NO ITS NOT 30%,ITS 7% AS WE SAID” would be gold.
I dont think that they afraid to hurt our feelings,they surely got something to hide.In my opinion

Lol Glad I started playing a ranger after the nerf because there sure is a lot of QQing here. Guess I don’t know what I was missing.
As far as I’m concerned, SB works great just the way it is. We always want things to be better. Just hurts sometimes when we used to get three cookies after snack time and now we only get two.

Nope, people want things to work properly.
Crossfire shots one arrow ever 0.52 seconds, with Quickness it should shot one arrow every 0.26 but it’s bugged and shots only one arrow every 0.32 seconds.

I don’t log in any more to the game, but I’ll keep following this issue because it is one of the things that really turned me off trusting Anet and put a bad taste in my mouth. If this situation is eventually admitted to and somehow fixed, I will consider playing again.

Either way, I will probably log in to check out Wintersday at some point. I sort of feel bad for Anet; their game must be doing much worse since making open world at 80 and all other dungeons obsolete with FotM. I think they lost more people than they retained by adding a new grindy gear tier without warning the player base of the design philosophy change. Feels like they are constantly backpedaling and trying to fix mistakes, but what they need to realize is that once you take a steaming “kitten” all over somebody’s trust, it takes a big change to bring them back.

I figure if big changes happen, I’ll see them on the forums. If not I can safely stay away.

At-least they fixed that SB graphic glitch, you know the one were we had burst damage. well the burst still din’t compare to warrior or thief but ours was range…. So surely needed a nerf.

I found a workaround, and have started using my shortbow again because of it, all you have to do is spam 1 really fast and stand still when you use QZ, it goes at the normal QZ speed. It doesnt work right if your not standing still and spamming 1.

I just find that since the nerf often nothing happens for a second or so when I use quickness plus shortbow one; no arrows fired, no damage/hit notifications on screen its really weird.
