What Makes this Class Fun?
Personally I feel like Rangers are king of tactical sustain. Like any class, they’re facerolly at entry level, but playing a power ranger at a high level is all about staying five steps ahead of your opponent and playing smart; Something we generally have the tools for — Poisons, interrupts, stealths, health regen, and range.
Also, I love bows, pets and how fun the nimble moveset of Sword/Dagger is.
- in wvw people assuming that I’m a scrub because in a ranger, then rage when you spike them.
- i love the pets, and weapon sets.
- using cc in beast master builds and watching your jaguar tear someone to bits.
- moment of clarity + GS/SB + dogs, and watching someone rage for being stun-locked for days.
- farming loot bags in wvw with an axe main hand
- see a perma stealth thief go in to stealth press gs#4 then stun lock/fear them until there dead.
- kill yacks that are being escorted by 3-4 people because the doing focus your pet and it gets 5 seconds of quickness when you are downed.
- 20+ seconds of stability
The evasiveness and CC. It just feels beautiful to have so many options when you’re fighting another player.
Evading.. Honestly the most fun I have in WvW is dueling warriors, because its just so satisfying to see people throw themselves at you again and again as you dodge all their attacks. I mean sure you get hit sometimes its bound to happen.. but still, you can dodge easily 70% of attacks from a full melee warrior. Guards can be fun to, but they tend to have so much reta and random burnings and symbols that it kinda takes the fun out of it, because even if you dodge their main attacks you’re still taking damage.
Gunnar’s Hold
1) Flying around the battlefield like a squirrel, so much mobility, and so many ways to juke people it’s ridiculous, thank god most rangers don’t utilize this or that’s be a nightmare to fight lol.
2) Having my damage and support split between two entities, as much as a lot of people hate it that’s one of the biggest perks to our prof…. Now if only more stuff buffed the pet AND is simultaneously, MoC, Agility Training, Pets Prowess etc I’m looking at you!!
3) Having constant damage instead of the bursty roller coaster damage that warriors and thieves have, nothing makes an enemy panic more than when you’re constantly chunking out their health with attacks that it doesn’t matter if they dodge because it’ll be up before they can dodge again anyway. Or it’s like the SB, or Sword where that damage is on the auto and is pretty much unavoidable.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
Being the only guy (or one of few) rolling out of zerg wipes 9 times out 10 with stability, damage immunity, stealth and GS leap.
As mentioned GS#4 on thieves is my newest tickle spot

1) Flying around the battlefield like a squirrel, so much mobility
Yup. Mobility. Thats why I enjoy playing melee/SB ranger so much… Also why I play playing d/p or d/d-SB thief as my 2nd favorite… although my Ranger has a lot more survivability built in.
Mowing down people who think you’re just another easy loot bag
Menorah | Charr Cat | Some Cat Thing
Still running my old RRR build because why not
The pets. They lost their proper range, they lost ‘Guard’ outside of towers or into them, they lost damage, but they’re still fluffy and provide some funny additional semi-independent utility. Making use of them is a game in the game. Still… Oh for the days of a 30 BM fully Master Bond’ed jaguar Sic’em’d at 3000 range…
The acrobatic 1H swordfight and it’s dagger companion for evade spam.
The warhorn. First it’s cool. Real heroes have a warhorn. And the skill 4 scaling up graphically with the target size is priceless. Skill should have been called “Attack of the Humongous Flesh-Eating Pigeons”. I know, it’s hawks, but for all the damage they do, they may as well be pigeons.
The beastly look of GS2. On a norn, it’s pure win.
The utter coolness of an axe/axe norn ranger. Max-sized norn + Signet of the Wild + Off-hand Training + Axe 5 = biggest axe dance ever.
The traps, though i prefer the idea of them than the underwhelming implementation.
1500 range. I don’t run it often, but every now and then, it’s fun to outrange everything else and cowardly run away as soon as they start noticing. I sing the Sir Robin song to myself when in that mood.
The spirits, particularly the underwater ones. It’s gorgeous to swim around some areas with your pet, your spirit dolphins and the giant spirit whale.
All that, and the 18k Bear Form charge.
Save the Bell Choir activity!
For me, the amount of evasion some builds give you…so powerful. Persistent conditions and ofc pets. I was never a pet person until gw2 but now I have to admit I love them, even if they are a little broken on skill use while moving.
Great solo roaming class!
L80 – Engi/Ele/Grd/Warri/Rngr/Thief/Mes/Nec
Co-Leader [PRXM] Praxium – Gunnar’s Hold
1. Being useless in a team
2. Troll your teammates
3. Trolled by your pets (F2, F2, F2, F2, no response and go in full CD)
4. Keep nerf by Anet
The class is a dodgers dream.
Good discussion.
Will have to try that GS4 more!
I like Rangers because of the Lore
Ranger in this game sucks
I really, really enjoy the playstyle of Axe/Dagger and Sword/Torch. The only other class that has a similarly “dance” style combat (dancing in and out of skirmish range and controlling the fight through maneuverability) is a thief with sword/dagger, and that build is much more 1 dimensional than a ranger.
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee” and all of that.
