Around a year ago I used a full Cavalier set with Defender runes for my pure melee build, which had incredible sustain through leaps in Healing Spring and through the runes. It also relied on “layups” for proccing Moments of Clarity and Opening Strike with GS#2. However, much has changed in the game since then, and I wondered what would be a good substitute for this kind of build.

Right now my current build I use marauder with Durability runes. trinkets are all berserker except for one cavalier ring for toughness. As for weapons I just use berserker mainly to keep damage. traits are simple marksman,survival and druid. Marksman is the best for dps and is kinda a must to be a melee ranger/any ranger. following that skirmishing/beast master are your best choices for secondary that or nature magic for more tankiness. As for your defense use Survival. it is great for condition cleanse and with Bark skin it will make you hard to kill. But if you have the Xpac. I suggest trying druid with either with survival, and marksman or trying druid with beast master(mainly for the shout rework.)and marksman. At the end of it all just play around with an online skill builder really to find what you want. hope this helped

The build, stats/traits/skills will be very different depending on where and for what you want to use it for.

I don’t understand how you can run a melee build for ranger. Regardless of build and gear, I’m way too squishy to be able to get within attack range of anything.

Still works well but I have played with many variations. Point is Melee Power Ranger is a viable build.

rabid plus rune of the undead on a melee ranger is nice using a/t s/d its not squishy and plenty of evades

I wouldn’t consider mainhand axe a true melee weapon, even though #2 works best in melee range.

But even power focused melee ranger with gs + s/x can be played with pretty tanky gear while maintaining decent burst thanks to Remorseless.

This is what i’m running almost exclusively in WvW since the trait changes last year (with only minor changes here and there – and new pets since HoT).
