When enemies write you off in print, it hurts.
Ive killed many good thieves. Rampage as one certainly helps but the key is avoiding that opening burst. If thieves blow their poison or backstab its almost too easy to kill them. Most tend to run. But I agree, rangers suck atm.
I beat the vast majority in 1v1s.
I run the spirit elite, RaO doesn’t help unless the thief is running some crazy tripwire/basilisk venom spec.
The bump to dmg is marginal the stability is the only real perk of RaO
ya, i’ve definitely found this to be true, mostly due to the fact that i’m not a very skilled ranger. however what annoys me more is the fact that if i do survive the initial burst and get the chance to go on the offensive, the thief can just disengage with stealth, i as a ranger only have the option to tie or lose, which is most annoying.
Any class that writes to defend against me don’t travel alone on a MMO forum has started the countdown to nerf;).
Many years of gaming experience tells me so.

A whittling ranger becomes viable by forcing his opponent to whittle
I don’t know. Usually i don’t have trouble against thieves. With a combination of torch and traps i can usually keep a good amount of conditions on thief even if they stealth, and i like to use a wolf to AOE fear them if i feel that they’re coming after me. A combination of dodging and vigor from lightning reflex usually lets me dodge them pretty well.
Then again the only type of thief i’ve really met on my ranger is the cheesy backstab build. I sort of became immune to it because dodging is sort of a reflex now. After the initial burst they try to run but i try to spike trap or root them as quickly as possible.
The way i know i haven’t met too many good thieves is that when they think they can’t get away they usually HS spam.
Sword seems to work pretty good 1v1 against thieves.
I’m not even 80 yet on my ranger and I can hold my own against them. They escape as often as not, but in 5 thief encounters in recent memory on my Ranger 1v1 in WvW only one has resulted in me dying. All those free evades you get with a sword can do a number on a thief’s initiative, and they don’t get the free reflect hits that a daggerstorming thief can get before you stop your bow autoattack.

I’ve always known Ranger’s were recognized as the weakest profession, but “to see it in lights” like this really hurts. I play as a kitten good Ranger, but I also realize I’m working ten times harder than every other class to be remotely competitive/threatening. It helps when I switch to my alts and roflstomp people without so much as twitching my little finger, but I love my Ranger and want to stick with the class!

We can only hope. A tip tho, use greatsword on thieves, you wont be able to counter every thief but greatsword is godly against them. When they get in range pop counter attack, watch them get blocked then kicked in the gut, then unload on them with a swoord + hiltbash, or simply dome check them with a weapon swap. Thieves are tricky since I run a glass cannon build, but if I can manage to get them low before I go down I can usually down them and turn it into a downsy war, which I will win 95% of the time.
However, a good thief using double dags will just spam dancing daggers, and do 17k damage in 6 hits too you.

That’s what happens when you don’t play the ‘in’ specs.
Ranger has REALLY good ones atm, but they are few, yet even when I half-as PvP with those I still tend to win the majority of deuls.
Oh and greatsword is never a good idea.

Traps and/or axe/dagger tend to work far better and are generally far more useful (even though that doesn’t say much)

You can survive a thief but only if you gear/trait for it. For example, I kill most thieves simply with traited signet of stone absorbing their initial damage. I then entangle and burst them where they stand.
However, any thief prepared for my particular build can control and defeat me easily. Rangers aren’t good against thieves unless you catch them offguard like I do.

I’ve had many thieves tell me I run a spec that’s their hard counter.
And it is, short of thief-shortbow kiting for days.

Fire trap falls out for chill trap (kiting in/around it destroys d/d thieves) or lightning reflexes (if you can’t/don’t want to swap elites) in a few cases.
Spirit of nature for RaO if you know they’re really good with CC.
The wolf’s fear ruins shadow refuge.
Good reflexes with headshot kills cleansing and healing and their attempt at stealth.
Crip/chill/imobs set up pet knockdowns and splitblade pretty well.
Basilisk venom is the only annoyance.
You can sack your pet with protect me to stop any dancing dagger spikes (courtesy of ‘protect me’) but you then are vulnerable for a basilisk venom spike.
Running RaO is advised if you are fighting someone who seriously knows what they are doing (top 3~%).

I’d say the same but if a thief knew to just wait out signet of stone, they could easily kite me or go invisible for a few seconds when I pop CD’s, then come around and burst me back down.
Otherwise my build is pretty good for the job. Glass cannon with temporary invincibility. I just wish signet of renewal’s active would remove conditions like it says.
I will admit I’ve only killed thieves that allow me to kill them, who don’t stealth and reset the fight. There’s really no counter to that (besides teleporting the moment you drop combat, because you can’t outrun them), I have to use all my cooldowns to kill them, they aren’t available for a second fight.
But I will offer two pieces of advice:
1. If you think a thief is near, and your pet is on passive, set it to aggressive right away. A pet on passive that loses its target won’t attack anymore. If you slip and you don’t hit F1 again, your pet will not help you, just sit around while you fight. By the time you notice this it might be too late. You need your pet to be on aggressive.
2. Split up your conditions. I drop Frost Trap/Viper’s Nest and stand in them the moment I see a thief stealth—but I save Entangle for later. I don’t know the thief’s exact methods of condition removal (so input on this would be cool) but if they have the ability to remove all conditions at once, which is what I suspect from several encounters.. you want to save your most powerful one, the immob, for after that’s over. No thief wants to fight while chilled, they will probably remove it.

Huh… greatsword seems to be doing wonders for me and my spirits, maybe it’s because i’m a defensive support build and not a “SMASH IT NOW!” build…
Idk what rangers that thief has been fighting, but i know i’ve crushed several roaming thieves beneath my boot in WvW, ESPECIALLY in 1v1s, they can hit hard sure…. if you’re naked and only have offensive stats…

Those are the 2 worst things going for the ranger right now in TPvP.
If you ever play that or SPvP you will be at a notable disadvantage.
But, of course, most of all it comes down to whatever floats your boat.

Thieves don’t stealth that much…
Higher dps ones usually only go into it threw “C&D” which is extremely dodgeable, “shadow refuge” which wolf pets can fear them out of or traps can put tons of hurt on them in, or “the heal skill” which shortbow can interrupt if you have good reflexes
(I suggest having the shortbow spammable on ‘auto attack’, it increases your reaction time for concussion shot by allot, if you manually push #1 it will go threw the full attack animation, even if you clicked concusion shot halfway threw; if the #1 key is on ‘auto attack’ and you use concussion shot halfway threw the spammable’s animation, the spammable will instantly be interrupt and concussion shot will go off with no delay. That and you don’t have to keep clicking the spammable key, freeing up your fingers to float above other keys (aka, faster reaction time)).
Then, of course you should bind ‘stow/draw’ weapons to a convenient key to interrupt that spammable for things like ‘projectile reflection’ and whatnot.
Anyways, spike thieves don’t tend to stealth easily and rangers have a few counters in the class to deal with it.
(edited by garethh.3518)
we are already at a huge disadvantage against thieves because of their shortbow ricochet and DANCING DAGGER. if you cant manage to avoid one or both of these skills while your pet is close to you, you will eat a kittenload of dmg and the thief is just hitting one button………
that being said i dont usually have problems with thieves 1v1 simply because i put traps on the ground and stand in them, and try to send my pet to attack and move away from me as fast as i can. these conditions alone causes 95% of thieves to abandon their backstab and reset, the other 5% eat the full trap dmg and i usually kill them faster than they can even hide in shadows. if they do abandon that first spike attempt i just put more traps down and interupt their combos / stealth with my pets and/or bow and stack lots of conditions. usually when they are revealed they are already downed.

I do play that in TPvP, you know what’s the great thing about using the 2 things marketed by the bad rangers as “Awful things”? You can completely wreck people when you know how to use the both of them, especially since people will underestimate you 200% of the time.

Lol no offense but duels dont really mean much, I win alot of mine also but the game isnt balanced around duels, hell I could go on guardian and win 95% of duels with 1 build but not be viable for tpvp because its too squishy. Ranger has ummm no real viable builds atm. Basically anything you think is viable someone else can do better.

It’s amusing, because I consider Thieves to be the least threatening profession for me.
My 23k hp and 3k armor might have something to do with it.

Yes psymon, we did crush people in both spvp and tpvp but that is because we are better players plain and simple. I say ranger has no viable build because there isnt a build a ranger can make that makes people want to take him over another class. Even the guys in our group were reluctant to take you because you are a ranger, they still are. I talked them into it because I know you are good, and we were short. I love my ranger too, and stomping the warrior over and over yesterday was one of my favorite moments on my ranger because the warrior thought he was tough, then got owned 10 times before rage quiting, but truth be told, any other class can do w/e ranger can do but better.
Once they fix the issues with ranger that will change. Then people will want rangers over warriors or thieves occassionally. Atm tho based on playing ranger ( who Im best on ) thief/guardian/warrior/engineer, I am just more effective on them, being able to do the exact same things my ranger can do, have more survivability, CC, support for my team, and mobility.

I get what you are saying, atm there are several ranger paths with potential to be viable, such as my glass cannon build, psymons hybrid build, several bunker/condi builds, ect… But the fact that ranger isnt as good as any other class at any other role is the problem. For condis, thieves and necros do it better, hell so do mesmers, warriors apply bleeds extremely fast and can do it while being super tanky, but suffer from no cover condis, for glass cannon burst thieves, mesmers, eles, warriors, engineers, even necros all do it better. Bunkers…well, guardian and necro are annoying as hell, so is ele and engineer, Idk about warrior bunkers since I never see them but pretty much ranger bunker is the worst too second worst behind warrior.

Huh, idk about you but every tPvP I’ve played with begs for my ranger to play with them, maybe it’s because I’ve become very good at bunker busting and/or capping points out from under them… Nothing says “Get the kitten off my point!!” Like a super charged drake breathe attack (they tend to not dodge the first one, but they learn fear from it)

I’ve been pvping my whole mmo career. I got to lvl 80 first in guildwars because i felt i wanted to before i started to pvp. So since im lvl 80 im pvping fulltime
What I’ve learned from thief encounters is that the most annoying thing for me is their gapclosers. It’s not so much of the damage since warrior’s can do the same thing on the damage part. The difference is just the mobility the thiefs have.
So by trying to give yourself as much mobility as possible you can win the fight 1v1 for the ones having a lot of trouble.
I use axe/wh and a shortbow precision/power/toughness build. Utility skills: “protect me”, the leapback (dont know the name right off the bat), and quickening zephir for burst. Ultimate: entangle
So everytime the thief try’s to close the gap you dodge out of the way using V. After you used that 2 times he will use the last gapclose on you. That’s where you use the leapback while using a pet stun, root whatever ( i like the widow spider) They will not be able to get out of that. That’s where i pop QZ (zuickening zephir) to get my first initial damage off.
It’s importand to keep your target stunned after the pet stun. Try to chain up as much as you can to delay him coming at you for the third time. You will force him to go stealth. wich means he has to use his stealth defensively. If he manages to lay his hands on you, you can use protect me to soak up a lot of burst. wich helps A LOT!
It will take a while for him to come back at you after this. you can either set up your chain again after this using a pet stun. Or use entangle if you are a bit low. Finishing him off.
I also like to play mindgames with players using the “leapback”. Try to jump out of his field of view (out of his screen ) He will turn around a few times to find you again. Buying you even more time to kill him.
I hope this helps, this is the first time for me writing some sort of guide on how i kill a class..
Well thieves in general have always countered most sniper classes. Since ranger here is able to do it all, even if not well, they have options. Thieves hurt, but so does going for opening burst only to be coutner attacked by ranger GS. Pop that out, kick them in the sternum, and hiltbash them, gg.
shrugs I’d like to 1v1 this thief – the best thieves I’ve ever fought I have a win record of about 50/50. More if you count the fact that most of the time when they win I had them on the ropes before they ran away and basically reset the fight.
GS is fantastic against thieves, as is condition/defensive spec shortbow. Entangle seems to be the best elite, but you need to get good at counting their initiative or when they weapon swap. If they don’t have any shadow steps via utilities or the shortbow then a full duration entangle takes most of their health by itself, you can use it to ruin their stealth, AND you can wail on them standing in place.
Thieves just really frustrate me right now because of their unbelievable escape ability – if they’re supposed to be the slippery class then damage needs to be toned down, but in their current iteration it’s too easy for them to have both incredible killing power and incredible ability to disengage and reengage fights on their terms. But even with that 50/50 against the best ones isn’t lacking “any sort of threat or defense against a thief.”

They do have op evasion. Seriously, like all their skills evade and they can spam it. Ok not all but each weapon seems to have a spamable evasion on it, makes it hard to hit them. Most dag thieves will just spam dancing daggers on a ranger and its so op that there is almost nothing you can do about it. Ive tried everything too, sending pet while staying range, good thief just closed distance, trying to burst while going evasive, thief just stealths and comes out with dancing daggers for 16k. Once they fix signets we might have a viable panic button but only when they get rid of sig of beastmaster, shouldnt even exist.
