A lot of us in the Ranger community have been waiting patiently for ANet to start improving our pet’s AI, survivability, cast time reductions on F2 skills, compensation skill(s) after pet’s death, cleaving attacks and pet revival time reduction, so on.
The pet is our profession’s gimmick which works against us more than benefits us. Every other professions F-key skills work fine but the Ranger has to wait for the pet to get in range—then wait for the pet to cast the ability and by then I have swooped or ran away because that F2 skill told 10 years to cast. Futhermore, we have no F2 skills when the pet dies. Our pets are a joke. A seasoned players will focus our pets first because of the HUGE advantage they will have after that.
Also, this game is all about AoE in PvE, s&tPvP and WvW and not introducing a pet mechanic to evade, reduce damage from AoE or non-trait health regen is hurting us badly as well.

I have to disagree with the first point.The aftermath of Anet’s last pet update shows that pets are an afterthought. They now do negligible damage in either burst or sustain. The tPvP community complained that was too good a source of damage and so pet damage was lowered almost across the board. So despite being a pet class, ranger pets are not our primary threat, at least not anymore. I will concede there are a few pets you might want to eliminate first, eg Canines, Birds, Drakes.
Aren’t we still at the, “Oh, Please ANet just venture into our thread so we can point out to you very legitimate reasons we are not content with our class!” phase?
Then after that it’s, “If we eventually take another look at the class we might make a few notes about some possible improvements we may or may not make.”
Then it becomes, “We decided to take another look at the class and determined there are a few minor changes we are thinking about making but we aren’t ready to share any of them with you yet.”
Then you wait to see IF you ever get anything. It isn’t a question of “when” it’s a question of, “How many IFs are left?”.

If they got rid of pets all together, and just upped our damage, I’d be happy with that. Maybe the pets could instead be different ‘spirits’ of the wilds…. eh…. and they would grant us a different support option based on what animal spirit you had out. And you could have 3 or 4 at a time for the F# functions, seeing as we have no other way to support. Except spirits in PvP, but they are going to be nerfed and they suck everywhere else anyway.
If they got rid of pets all together, and just upped our damage, I’d be happy with that.
I’d bet my next pay check that at least 1,000 people who main rangers are waiting for this and would be very very happy with this. Myself included.
If all we got in trade of taking away the pet was upped damage I would be upset. The pet also serves as a source of utility. If it’s taken away completely we need access to the other things it does for us via another mechanism. The pet sucking robs us of a lot more than just damage output.

How in the world is that the same thing? faster reaction/activation on F2 skills is a must. This is a fast paced action game. Giving two greatswords to a warrior is not the same thing and i doubt ArenaNet ever said anything like that.

Approaching wolf now lol, turns out the Perma Cow Finisher alone was enough to get me to play hot joins now xD. And what happened 3 months ago? I did AR and got all the achievements in there… On a lv 35 Mesmer/ lv 40 Ele… So granted not ranger, and then F&F was on a lv 3 mes and Canach was on a lv 30 mes (I like playing my lowbies lol)

Thief is essentially a petless ranger , aka really strong anywhere (keep in mind I play with high acro instead of high stealth, evades make people more angry than stealth).

Thieves don’t have longbows or greatswords, so thief is unlikely to become my main. That being said, I’m not particularly impressed by rangers or warriors either, so I’m really not sure where to go from here. Maybe they could give the longbow to guardians…

Thief with a longbow would be my main in a heatbeat.
You guys can move on, the Ranger shall still be my main for the majority of things that come out new to the game. You can never replace the playstyle of a trap ranger, NEVER.
