Whoa, pet names remembered now
It doesn’t work all the time.
EU Elona Reach – Void Sentinels
It seems like there is some sort of hierarchy. My 2 cats, which I named first, work 100% of the time. Later pets sometimes work and sometimes don’t.
Are they your underwater pets too?

What kind of ridiculous programming is going on behind the scenes to name pets? seriously ANet, it can’t be that hard to preserve that information. I would be more keen on playing my ranger if my pet names would stay consistent whenever I log in.

To give them a break: They would have to store 44 names for each ranger in the game. Now they only have to store 2 names, which is already 2 more than any other class.
If you can come up with a solution for them without having to store 44 names for each Ranger in the game, then I’m sure they would be glad to hear it.

^ Batch files that load into the SQL DB associated to the account/character, since the infrastructure is set in place, they can always add to, the easiest way would be batch files upon login.

If they can store the visual appearance with every customization slider setting, hair color, armor set, armor color, current pets, current equipped weapons, current achievements, original story/personality setting, etc. for every single player in the game, then I don’t see why they can’t contain a simple string value (name) for each pet, especially considering that most rangers don’t have each of the 44 available pets.

That’s the thing, the way the DB was probably setup is accounts/characters were the meat and potatoes, if Pet names were not a static feature by design it no programmer would re write the entire DB for that reason alone. The coders would have to add these values to the account/character, and yes with the capacity for 44 values per ranger.

They can add a new relational table to the DB just for that purpose, so that it’s associated with the pet id and user id, you can use any methods of making this carry as little weight as possible, but it shouldn’t be a terrible thing to store data like this. They can restrict the number of character and type of characters people can use; as people in the real world name their pets with any made up names, not numbers or symbols.

Here I thought my ranger suffered from short term mem— here I thought my ranger suffered from…

Still running my old RRR build because why not
I don’t mean to rain on anybodies parade, but dedicating any sort of resources to pet naming before anything else that affects actual gameplay is just about the last thing I care about.
I can understand that some people are OCD enough that the aesthetic value of being able to save pet names and not take the few moments to just rename them, but seriously, in a completely outrageous metaphor, it’s like complaining about an old flip-phone because you actually have to flip it open to use it.
Enough with humoring myself though, I get it, I really do, but the game didn’t launch with it and there are still like, I would actually say probably about a literal million other things that ANet needs to dedicate those resources to before they worry about rangers not being able to save their pet names.
So while the miniscule effect on the QoL of the class might be nice, I would rate it as overall unimportant in the grand scheme of things.
My opinion though, you don’t have to listen to me, and obviously it will never stop bugging the people that it bugs, so I’m not trying to dissuade you from your arguments lol.

Pet name saving is maybe difficult for AN for some reason.
What about making the pets have selectable skills to use, so we;
- Don’t have to change pet setup at somewhere
- Can use the pet we like with the skill we need.
My statement on this is still that we should select 2+2 pets (or 1+1 if it were mutch better designed) and to care about them as well as we care about ourselves.
We’re supposed to be “One” after all.

Just let us create our pet name during character creation, what is your pet slot 1’s name, what is your pet slot 2’s name. (no matter how you change pet, the name stays)
I think a lot of stuff is difficult for the anet team because a lot of it was prolly done by a previous team.

Wow remembers 55 Pet Names for every Hunter in the game easily
Full melee Ranger since August 2012
It’s a simple solution.
Just save a text file locally and hold all pet names in it. When a pet is in either slot, the text file is read through and the name is checked if it is acceptable; if it is, the pet has the name and if not, the line in the file is removed and the pet is once again Juvenile <pet type>.

Nah, my very first pet that I almost never swap out forgets his name EVERY TIME I swap him for another pet, yet my brown bear Beary Bearington has never once forgot his name no matter how many times I’ve swapped him or how long I leave him “stowed”

This is the reason I never bother to name my pet. Until its fixed, not going through the effort to rename when I change pets depending on what i do in game.
For the rangers that only do pve and/or keep the same 2/4 pets, its great for them. I just wanna name my pets for some type of food, is that so hard to ask for? Apparently… lol.

So there is some type of permanence. I don’t know what it is, but something is causing my cats to retain their names no matter what I do, and something is causing your bear to retain it’s name.

You like peanut brittle ?
I hate it. I don’t like any sugary stuff other than fruit. Are you suggesting that’s why my cats retain their names?
Are the pets remembering their names also your underwater pets? My reef drake always keeps his name, but that’s because he’s slotted as one of my underwater pets too. Otherwise, there is no name retention when switching pets around that I’m aware of.
The Rescuer – Smoke And Flowers – Nectar Protector – Dhuumwind –
Specter Protector – Pushed Daisies – Imprinted – Die Groundlings
Ya my cats are underwater pets.
But doesn’t that fit the playstyle of almost all rangers? Cats for PvE, dogs or whatever for PvP/WvW? Name problem solved?
Did I miss the excitement about this, or was this a stealth update?
If you change your pet, get ready to see no name.
To me, all should be able to be named at taming and keep that name.
Go Anet, yay, – I am sure you can find a way to do this… it’s just a database entry…
If you change your pet, get ready to see no name.
That’s a negative. The reason I noticed it was switch from WvW to PvE. Cats retained their names when I requipped them. I can change pets at will and my cats will retain their names 100% of the time. Other pets will sometimes retain them, sometimes not.

If your cats are also set as your aquatic pets, they will retain their names when you re-enable them, if you swap them out temporarily for another as your terrestrial pets.
Also, yes, it would probably be best for pet names to be cached locally, and re-entered automatically when we select them.

That explains why Beary keeps his name too….
