Why even have a "ranger" class in most MMOs?
I agree with everything you’ve said so far. Having a level 80 Elementalist, I can tell you there is a major gap in damage and survivability between the Ranger and the Elementalist. The Ele puts out massive damage, while the Ranger does consistent, but very low damage. And, surprisingly, my Elementalist and my Ranger die at nearly the same rate, which definitely should not be the case. People talk about the Thief and the Warrior being Anet’s main focus on improving, and now that I’ve leveled quite a bit, I realize that’s pretty much true. Anet discards the rest of the classes for later improvement, which I have yet to see done. Perhaps an improvement in Longbow damage and pet improvements would allow me to become more interested in playing my Ranger. I really would like to play my Ranger, but until he gets an improvement, I’ll be playing other games.
The ranger is my favorite class too and I have invested far too much in many sets of exotic armor trying to find a sweet spot somewhere. I think I have found my comfort zone, at least for now, with a GS/SB Hybrid Beastmaster build. I’m uploading a video soon.
Ranger seems simple enough on the surface, but it has a lot of depth and nuance once you explore your options, as I’m sure you’re aware. Perhaps your idea of a classical ranger isn’t quite the same as Anet’s?
Yeah, I suppose there’s really nothing catering to the Sniper demographic in this game.
Thief’s got the sneaky, but lacks the ranged beatdown. Warrior’s got the ranged beatdown, but lacks the sneaky. Wintersday Scout had it nailed, so I know Anet’s got it in them to marry the two somewhere. But for some reason or another that’s apparently just not in the cards for any class to inherit.
It’s a shame you can’t really find your niche.
I’m not really sure what else to say, really.
Good luck to you.

I humbly disagree on thieves lacking the ranged beatdown… i can dish out 1.9-2.7 autoattacks (crit of course) with my SB… that s just autoattack and it ricochets by default… nr.2 ability does 4-6k crit damage AoE (with 25 stacks of bloodlust these numbers) and can be spammed…
for single target you have 2xpistols which gives way more “beatdown” than a ranger SB…
Warrior is just superior single target sniper with rifle (oddly) especially with their F1 skill..
just my personal experience…

Anet and I dont see eye to eye on the classical ranger definition indeed… that is a given…
And yes Ranger in GW2 has a steep curve in learning its full potential…
But my issue is not only the definition of the ranger or the depth of it. I beleive invested same amount of time to a ranger and x class… trying all ins and outs of it, any average player can be lot more effective with the “X” class for now… that goes for any other weapoon or fighting style than bows…
Any fighting style you pick as a ranger, given the chance the “x” class does it a lot better…
I never had anything that i could say “hey i could have done this with my ranger a lot better!” that IS my main issue…
But yes i would love to have an effective “archer type” ranger too))

I think he’s stating because Thieves’ range is short when compared to other class’ ranged sets. One playing a sniper would want a set that could perform high damage from at least 1200 range while drawing little attention to themselves.
Part-time Kittenposter
The reason I play Ranger is because of the 1500+ range on the longbow (with piercing arrows) and the 25% passive movement speed. I initially picked Ranger because of the pets, but they aren’t that useful.
I know other classes are better at basically everything. I love the idea of playing a guardian that simply doesn’t die or a warrior with a high damage rifle, but neither has the 1500+ range. The range alone is why I still play my ranger and I wouldn’t trade it for anything else.
I just hope the class will improve over time. Although I fear it’s going to be several years to see some real improvement (if any at all). The 25% movement speed buff was great though, and I hope more like it will follow.
I think the Ranger is currently handicapped by the pets and there is no real strength in having them. I hope they improve on this severely or take the pet out of their damage calculations. Although, I feel the pet is meant to be there to take away the damage from the class with the longest attack range. Too much damage at the longest range can be really bad for gameplay, so it would be about as bad for gameplay as stealth and clones currently are.
Well, personally i’ve always prefered melee rangers.
When i think ranger i think Aragon, Minsc or just generally some wilderness survival thief/warrior hybrid but i’m still not happy, and it’s the same reason those that prefer archery aren’t happy with it.
The pet is kitten and beeing dependant on them isn’t even optional.
You either need them, or you really need them.
The ranger is more dependat on it’s class mechanic than most(if not all) other professions, and it’s the most unreliable and wonky one there is.
I need to switch attunements on my elementalist for it to function properly, the diffirance is i have complete control over that, i do not have complete control over the pet. Hell it can’t even hit moving targets properly.
I just wish it could play more like it did in the two first betaweekeds where the pet was still crap and the main source of ranger complaints, but atleast it wasn’t a burden.
The class wen’t from the most op in the game to the worst during the last BWE, while it’s alot better now than the trainwreck the BWE3 ranger was it’s still one of the weaker classes all beacuse of the kitten poor desicion that the pet should do substantial potion of the rangers damage no matter how you spec.
I have 4 lvl 80 chars now with full exotics set (except for ranger). Mesmer, Engineer, Ele and Ranger. Mesmer was the first character I made and payed for about 4 months, til I re-rolled into ranger, then Engi, then ranger again, then Ele and now playing ranger again too.
Mesmer and Engineer are those I barely touch while I play Ele and Ranger equally much. So for those who usually say “ranger is a broken class, go play mesmer or warrior”. Well, guess what, been there, done that. I find ranger being much more fun and I am completely sick to death playing mesmer.
You can argue that that other classes can do what you do but much better, well maybe, but in the end it’s about having fun. I guess the thing with rangers is that I just love playing with bows…
Now let’s look at the argument of any other class doing everything better than ranger. There are 8 classes and most can go support, bunker, dps, control or some mix of those mentioned.. So if you only want to play pure DPS, should everyone play the class that statistically do highest numbers of damage? Let’s say it’s a warrior (although I don’t know for a fact, let it just be an example). Does that mean everyone who plays DPS on other classes are idiots because they are “less effective” compared to the warrior? Or lets take 2 warriors, one dps and one bunker and then a zerker Ranger. You cannot then say that the 2nd warrior is gonna be better than the zerker ranger DPS wise, because it’s obviously not true. Will you then say that playing bunker warrior is stupid because you should do more DPS than this ranger guy here and if you want to be bunker go play a guardian instead? So where will that lead us in the end..? You gonna kick both zerker Ranger and the bunker Warrior and take 2 more DPS warriors instead?
That just shows a very narrow minded game play and in reality that’s not how it works. I won’t deny there’s some elitist groups that only want warriors or mesmer for best dps. But you cannot simply compare a class to a class without taking into account the variation of builds.
An one more thing too. Even if you want to look at it purely statistically, reality is not so black and white. For example, I can’t even count how many times I’ve been the last man standing in a dungeon party saving us from whip at bosses (what is that close ranged dps warrior good for when he dies from AoE while I stand 1500 units away with my bow, safely and alive?). Nor can I count how many times I’ve beaten thieves, warriors, mesmers, etc, in pvp. There is always a skill level present and you cannot deny it. I hear many people argue that “well, this player is bad at his class, it doesn’t count”. But most people are more or less an average player (as well as me). Really bad and really good players are more of an exception than a rule. So you can show all the numbers and statistics and theory crafting all you want. But obviously rangers can work just as well as any other class despite their annoying bugs and broken pets.

The “problem” is rangers are traditionally the hit-things-at-range-with-a-bow class, the ranged-combat-and-best-at-it class. Guildwars 2 has gone in a different direction; the Warrior is designed to be the best with weapons in a straightup headbutting contest, ranged as well as melee. There’s no healing class is another one.
The Guildwars 2 Ranger is designed to be a single-tough-pet class (unlike the Necromancer’s cannon-fodder-easy-come-easy-go minions).
Some people can’t/won’t accept that.
This isn’t an ‘ANET is utterly awesome and cannot go wrong and the pet and ranger are utterly awesome’ post. There are problems: the obstruction bug, the AI for the pet can be ropey, and then there’s awful traits: 1 second might for the pet every critical hit on a trait? The specialist pet traits are hardly brilliant either to name just a few problems… but “my bows aren’t matching the class that’s specifically designed to be the best with weapons” is really not the problem. Hell, it’s not a problem. The problem is when the ranger can’t match with the pet as well.
ArenaNet has made a great job with this game. I am involved in design and I have to say the design of this game is the best I’ve ever seen. That’s not only because they have very talented people working there but also because they focused in the most important thing of all, the concept. They made every class with a deep concept, like ranger – nature, pets etc. Thus, the weapons of a ranger are natural and not rifles or guns (which I would like to see but anyway it’s k). However, the other concept they embraced was to be able to play the way YOU want to play. But for all of us who played games like these for ages, that is extremely hard to achieve. The reason is people tend to find builds which are generally better than others. And obviously, since they are more efficient, they become trends. Now I, for example, want to play only longbow and sword/x or GS. This is not possible and yes I play for fun but its an MMO and not an offline game. So interaction with other people is a must. And that’s why we like it. Most people though, don’t care about you and how you like to play and just want “perfection”. That’s half of the problem. The other half is that I don’t see any intention by Anet towards improving the concept of variety in builds, so everyone can feel satisfied. Also I don’t see many responses to threads like this which is either good – they prepare a surprise – or bad – they don’t care about that unless the number of rangers gets to like 1% of what is now.
Totally agree with you and most of the other people who posted above.
Also, in most MMO there is this weird phenomenon: reworking a class feels like a taboo thing.
It’s not a shame to rework a class or skills or mechanics or whatever. It’s fine. But sadly, nobody does it. Never. Only small changes here and there.
I have a Condition Ranger and a Condition Thief
My Thief is easier to play, easier to survive and generally just all around better at most things in RvR.
My Ranger is a bit more fun to play in 1v1 fights, just because there is a rotation and you generally have to know how to play well while my Thief tends to be, dodge around, stealth then do pistol one…
Which is basically the entire class.
I thought about rolling another character, but quite honestly..i’m kind of sick of GW2, I’m actually looking foward to SWTOR mini expansion that is coming out…that should tell you something.

It is funny because when I think ranger, I think best class in GW1. The ranger class that was in GW1 would be the best class in GW2 if they were somehow carried over. It would actually be very interesting to see what class would be the best flag carrier in GvG if they had that in GW2.
Ranger was the best in the first game because it was easily the most well rounded it had everything. In this game I guess maybe Guardian would me a lot of sense or theif.

It is not haters gonna hate anyways issue but i beleive you misunderstood the whole point…
The point is not comparing warrior DPS – Warrior Bunker – Zerker ranger and which one to pick…
It is the pure issue of the roles available to rangers can be done more effectively plus bringing the utilities alongside by other class… Now for the ranger enthusiasts like me (and possibly you) you try to put a huge effort and try to keep the gap between the two as close as possible… and try to be useful…
On the other hand unfortunately you do NOT have the FULL control over your playstyle… whatever style you pick AT LEAST 40% of your effectiveness comes from pets/spirits that are simply broken (in some cases even up to 60-70%… like in a bunker build you depend on your pet heavily for damage).
And sadly i beleive in the hands of an able player a bunker warrior can do more DPS than a zerker ranger as he will have AT LEAST double as long uptime compared to the “zerker ranger”
The class’ shortcomings also depends on where you play, in PvE you are “managable and maybe fun” not overall broken… in sPvP and 1vs1 you can do OK If and only IF you go one of the two known builds… in WvWvW you are simply BROKEN…
that is my experience

no complaints.
i chose ranger to play a pet class. i am not disappointed. i would be hard pressed to find a pet mechanic in another game that is as good as this.

Best at what? I think there’s quite a few Rit’s that would disagree with you.
The way I see it, the pure ‘archer’ archetype we know from other MMOs simply does not exist in GW2 world. Ranger doesn’t come close to it, since it’s a very pet-oriented class with a rather crappy longbow. It’s fine, the general idea at least, just implemented badly.
I will go even as far as saying a class that is heavily reliant on pet and it’s AI has absolutely nothing to do in a game that wants to have solid/competitive PvP, but that’s not something we’re discussing here. Inb4 someone brings WoW’s hunter into this – pets there were merely a utility (not to mention they tanked the kitten out of anything), and not something you were relying on in PvP nearly as much as you’re forced to in GW2.
I’ve always been an archer, it’s the class I started my MMO journey with and it’s probably the class I’ll stick with forever. I’ve always had most fun with it in just about any MMO I’ve played; GW1 being an exception, since I monked most of my time, but I had tons of fun PvPing with a ranger. I wish they just brought the class over, I know for a fact that it would be a lot more enjoyable.
-just many incorrect statements-
I’m tired of seeing posts like this.
Me too.
Well. How about this. You live. Use search and rescue to make your pet drake stick his groin on your annoying others faces. Get laughs as they get up and run away from your pet every time, then continue to live.
Having highest dps is something in all mmos. Could look at WoW for instance. currently in a raid. Do less than 30k and your being carried. As opposed to if your doing double that. You are pretty much golden. Sure classes have differences, and skill makes a huge difference because that 30k dps player could be in great gear and the 60k dps could be hoping for upgrades still.
So since everyone looks for the highest dps. they generalize. Back in catacalysm, the unholy death knight got a lot of crap for being terrible dps. And where if you did decent, there was awe. Or those who would say. ‘Go frost and you can do more.’ Despite making the easy powerful dps class look like an idiot by beating them damage wise every fight.
So it translates here. If your having trouble on a fight. Sure you may miss mechanics and die from somethign you could have avoided. Sure you went too much for damage and you eat a lot of dirt. But if a class has pretty decent damage at a range that allows them to keep damage up. Or to buy you all enough time to run back to your corpse. Maybe also lay down some spirits and have a pet heal you as well. You may not notice the buffs as much as say a guardian where you just get everything for 5 seconds.
So people will look at a class as a whole. There are warriors and mesmers who I seem to find dead more often than I have seen a ranger or theif. The power comes from a varied group as opposed to a lot of overlap.
If anyone played DnD. You are not going to have much success if your all strikers with one defender. You need a leader, and a controler. And rangers do those two roles at about the same time with spirits and their pets. Also to interupt things that would kill you.
I crafted Bolt with my main ranger, Faelwan. Forget the haters, play how you have fun. Why play ranger? Because it’s fun. Pure and simple.

This.
Honestly rangers just need better and different utility skills.. As of now the only thing good are traps and you have to spec to make them good as where other classes don’t have to spec into things to make their utilities good. I miss the gw1 ranger so much better IMO and completely different … Now I’m forced to use a pet.. Shouts are complete garbage. Cool I can trait to make signets effect me. Other classes have signets as well. Survival skills. Lightning reflexes cool I do a backflip stun break! Awesome.. What do mesmers get stealth clone now that’s cool! (I compare these 2 classes because I main both) . Sharpening stone great my next X attacks cause bleed not very appealing to me even as a condi ranger it’s good damage but it doesn’t add “flare” to the class.
Add something special that really makes ranger fun to play cuz right now they just seem boring.. Only reason I find them fun to play in pvp is because I can swap pet quickness stomp. No other skill makes me wow when I use it.
Most ranger utilities are utterly useless. All weapons except the LB are actually decent. I also have an 80 guard who makes a visible difference in wvw and pve. Comparing my ranger to him makes me wanna cry.
So what im saying is yes, the ranger is fun and ill keep playing him. But the prof sucks. Telling people “play whatev as long as it’s fun” is ridiculous cuz personally I hate dragging my team down. Devs need to man up admit their mistakes and fix the prof. Instead of lying and telling us that signets, spirits, shouts and pets will get fixed.
(edited by nerva.7940)
I think the problem is false advertisement. They’re said to be a ranged attack or ranged specialist that uses a pet to pin their foes down from afar. But really, excluding offhand weapons, there’s 3 ranged and 2 melee weapons. One of those ranged weapons is also more of a midrange weapon too.
Whenever I play another profession, I always immediately miss the ability to bounce axes off of heads. I regret being able to cleave through bodies with a slab of metal and wood held together by dreams and spit that I call a greatsword. I long for something as simple as even the sword’s ruthless aggression. Pokémon.
Personally, I think of the ranger as a scrappy fighter. I feel everything about them points to that kind of fantasy. Using what they can get on hand to survive. They have magic, but they’re willing to get physical, they’re not cowering behind a wall of corpses or a labyrinth of illusions. They aren’t trained fighters like warriors and Thieves. They aren’t protected by God-like power. They don’t even have magic strong enough to rip apart existence. What they do have, is grit, determination and a loyal companion who will fight by their side.
Just try thinking that sometimes. Warriors will ignore their pain and fight to the bitter end, Thieves will cut their losses and hide when the going gets tough. Rangers will grit their teeth and get back up, because they’re never alone.
“There, it’s dead and it’s never coming back!” – Famous last words
They actually dont have magic. Spirits remain broken 7 months later.
Totally agree with what you said there HotHit.
Sorry you dislike ranger. I absolutely love the class and think GW Rangers are yet again the best in any MMO. Here are some tips that will make you feel over powered:
1. The first thing is to understand each pet and bring the right ones for your build.
1. Get ascended Armour and trinkets.
2. Ranger is hardest class to master, so that’s why it seems weak.
3. You need to master combo fields and utility you have.
4. It is important to understand each pet and bring the right ones for your build.
5. Try to counter your opponents skills. Button mashing = dead.
6. Don’t forget to understand each pet and bring the right ones for your build.
7. Try to learn the right conditions to use on your opponents.
8. Save your dodgey attack skills for when you need to dodge.
9. And finally, try to learn each pet and bring the right ones for your build.
Well, hope that helps.
