Why i feel useless as a ranger using pets...
As a Ranger, I’m dreading dungeons, and I’ve played from the 3 day head start.
TBH I don’t even know if I can face the humiliation that will be rained down on me.
Yup get rid on the pet, give us a proper Ranger, not a beastmaster.
The fanbois will of course shoot us down in flames now.
If ArenaNet just added a “Lock pet” button – ALOT of my/our problems would be solved…

My pet flat-out stopped listening to me a couple of days ago. I kept hitting F1 for him to go pull monsters, and he just won’t budge. I ended up having to melee the monsters I was trying to pull (bow attacks did nothing) before my pet got a clue. Every. Single. Time.

Also, +1 on permanent stowing. As-is, the “stow pet” option practically has no purpose beyond taking petless vanity screenshots. I’m not sure how big of an impact it’ll have on our traits since a pretty large portion of them even beyond the BM line have to do with our pets, but I’m willing to take the dps penalty just for the option.
I’m new to the game, and the profession. Can you swap your current pet with an empty slot?

I never had a problem with my pet… when ever you gona run just put your pet away

as a ranger i have both arah and coe armor set
you dont need to dread dungeons at all
i change utilities and heals to suit situation, stow pet when needed (this is problematic at times ofc)
also im running prec condi build with zerker gears, no problem surviving
Totally agree with that…pets have no defense, they die in 1 hit, if it is a bear, 2. And a lot of pet’s skills are bugged, like the Lick Wounds. Most of times he doesn’t heal you…
I love pet classes and all that but honestly in the state pets are right now, i prefer Anet just give us a lock to hide it forever and compensate the damage lose with some kind of buff. They are really useless in wvw and in every aspect of the game
You guys that feel that pets are useless , problem is you not the pets.

1) aslong you swap your pet at 50% health or less your CD swap will be 15 sec max instead of the 40 sec
2) if you know that you are in a heavy aoe figth use a range mob will avoid you losing your pet to quick
3) some pets can be use just for buff so you dont even need to send them to attack but just keep them next to you
Need to learn a bit more control of the pet. In dungeons, esp ones where you know you have to run past mops, put pet on passive, and stow. If you know you are going to take some hits and pet will come out, put Guard skill on bar, and send pet in first with a a guard. That way, the pet isn’t pulling items to you, distracts the mops, and will also end up dead and not being a mop magnet.
On boss fights, switch to a ranged pet, or put on passive, and send in with the Attack my target command as needed, and pull back with the Return to me before the AOE attacks.
Op I feel ur pain. Hope anet is reading
God it so annoying jade maw I have to stand there and do jack so my stupid pet doesnt pop out and get target by jade maw skelly face -.-

Pretty much follow this advice and you’ll be fine in dungeons, as for some skills not working yes Lick Wounds has been buggy for me as of late, as well as Search and Rescue at times the pet does not move to an ally when commanded. I really hope ArenaNet Devs are looking into these issues, Ranger is a great profession but you guys( ANet )really need to work the bugs out and balance it.

1. i think this is very obvious, sometimes pets take some much damage in one hit you dont even have time to change but anyway i think every ranger tries to do this.
2. yea in dungeons might be fine but in wvw they still get owned easily. At least the times i have tried them
3. yea sounds great and in wvw is probably the best thing to do since pets die so fast. Problem is once you click F2 for the buff the pet goes to target and attacks it, doing the buff very far away from you causing you not to get buffed.

That’s good in theory but not really how it goes down in reality. Most dungeon runs are in fast paces and most of the times you (at least i) have a dead pet or cooldowns on swapping pet. None will ever wait for you when you say “hey guys wait one minute for my pet cooldowns to refresh so i can try to control it”. Tried it once and the response “Lol no, we have cooldowns too you don’t see us taking a break every second. We don’t want to spend all day in the dungeon”.
Plus, on boss fights while range pets do survive a bit longer in 80% of the cases they end up dead too due to the boss doing AOE skills in 1200+ range and pressing F3 to call the pet back to you to avoid it is useless as the pet still just remains standing in the AOE circle. (well, at least in the dungeon’s i’ve been so far).
On WvW this doesn’t work at all, even by having the pet next to you you rarely ever get the buff since you are on the move all time and your pet rarely ever damages the opponent unless he is afk.
Being a “petMASTER” is really frustrating when your pet simply doesn’t do what you ask out of it.
When i was watching trailers of this game and then started it and picked ranger it was my understanding that the pet would be a backup and not a mandatory source of damage. A pet you could combo skills with. Not half of your DPS going on a pet that dies in 2 hits and has pretty non responsive F2 skills and in general being a burden instead of a help.
My suggestion to ArenaNet is to put a new skill to completely hide the pet for those who don’t want it. Example :
> F5 – Disable Pet – Permanently hides pet until is recalled again. While Pet is disabled ranger’s damage with weapons is increased by 20%.
^just a suggestion. It solves 90% of the pet problems and the damage output of the ranger. This is something that takes like 2 days to implement instead of having to revamp and rework the whole class due to being so ridiculously flawed around their pets.
in addition you could change the F2 skills as forward:
> AOE skills like the Carrion Devourer’s poison cloud, Murellow’s Poison Cloud add a stack of poison on autoattacks to the enemy when you shoot arrows through them
> Bird skills: skill like bleeding , cripple etc etc no longer get casted by the pet. Instead they apply a buff on your next autoattack which cripples / bleeds etc etc your enemy. And the buff is applied instantly, no longer laggy unresponsive bird animations
> Drake Pet Skills: No longer gets casted by the pet. Instead it applies a buff to your next autoattack which burns/chills etc etc your enemy. The effect bounces up to 3 nearby enemies (similar effect as the elementalist lighting attacks). The buff is applied instantly, no longer laggy unresponsive drake animations and people simply walking away from their skills by the time they finish casting
> Hound/Bear Pet Skills: as it is, cause lets face it is cool to see a wolf / dog howl and a Bear Growl.
This would finally fix the pet problems and give rangers new ways to play their characters. Just my 2 cents ArenaNet

This pretty much sums it up for me, it’s going to be very difficult for ArenaNet to get the pet right, if ever, the mechanics of the thing are just too complcated, a dead pet to me is a pet that’s laying on it’s back with it’s legs in the air, not one that’s hobbling back to me and dragging several mobs with it.
Give Rangers the option, some people love their pet’s, as I did in GW1 at time’s, some people hate it.
As I said before, dungeon’s to me are going to be a nightmare, having to try, and fail, to micro-manage a dead burden all the way through, and try to stay alive, with pressure from other players, a chance of being insulted, and getting kicked from dungeons, and all the ltp insults.
Dungeons are already getting “elitist” with certain professions already being excluded from dungeon runs, it’s just something else that splits the community even more.

I Lol’d. Pet are supposedly 40% of our damage, and the best solutions are all about putting them on passive, stowing them, or just using it for a buff that takes so long to cast you are 3000 range away by the time it activates.
If you have to do these the pet system is BROKEN, but my guess is ANet won’t bother to fix it as they don’t know how.
If you complain about not hiding pets because of cooldowns its your own fault. Just tell your party to wait for like 45 seconds if your pet died so you can hide it. If they are skipping areas then they shouldn’t mind.
Imagine if you could lock pets and be given their stats (maybe not 100% transfer but a good amount). Would be soooo good.

Right cause in a party that wants to finish fast i must tell them to wait a minute every time the pet dies which is 99% of the times. Like wise we should wait for every characters cooldowns to come up so after every mob we kill we take a 5 minute break for all to be ready.
The “petmaster” that can’t control his own pets is flawed by design.
Honestly, point 3 is the only viable complaint. The rest are player failures, whether it be lack of control, trying to skip, or inability to win against mobs. Even point 3 can be avoided with pet on passive, or a ranged pet, or a stowing before the issue (you automatically heal after fall damage so stowing quickly becomes available, not to mention the fact that you fell with the pet already stowed anyway).
I had those problems when I was new to the game. I don’t anymore. The buttons have never not worked for me. If I press f1 he attacks. If I press f3 he returns. If I press f2 the ability activates. If I press f4 the pet switches. Maybe your installation of the game failed to install certain files that controlled the pet, I don’t know. If you think its a true bug, vid or screenshot it and post in bug forums.
